Synopsis
Everyone has gathered at Son Goku's house, mourning the condition of his heart disease. By time his son, Son Gohan, arrives, Goku has passed away. Shortly thereafter, a pair of devilish Artifical Humans appear and begin a rampage of death and destruction. The Z Warriors step in, but are mercilessly killed, leaving Son Gohan as the sole survivor and plunging the Earth into the depths of despair. Thirteen years have passed and Trunks is now a teenager. He has been diligently training under his mentor, Gohan, in hopes of defeating the evil Artificial Humans. Bulma has also been building a time machine with the purpose of rewriting history. Gohan is eventually killed while confronting the Artificial Humans, and upon finding his body, Trunks' rage unleashes his Super Saiyan power. Even with his newfound powers he is still no match for the Artificial Humans, and is badly beaten. Having recovered, Trunks agrees to travel back to the past with the hope that with Goku's help he can defeat the Artificial Humans once and for all. This is the history of the lonesome warrior, Trunks.
Summary
Prologue
In an alternate timeline, Son Gohan races back to his family home. All of Son Goku's friends are already gathered there: Vegeta, Piccolo, Chiaotzu, Tenshinhan, Kuririn, Yamcha, Yajirobe, Bulma, Baby Trunks, Oolong, and Pu'er. Chi-Chi, her father, and Turtle Hermit wait by Goku's bed. Everyone is relieved that Gohan made it. Gohan rushes into his father's room, but it is too late. Son Goku is dead.
Six months later, Artificial Humans 17 and 18 emerge and attack a city on a southern island. Goku's friends scramble to fight off the attack, but they are quickly killed: first Piccolo, then Super Saiyan Vegeta, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, and Kuririn. The world is plunged into chaos.
Part A
Thirteen years later, Pepper Town appears surprisingly normal with people going about their lives. A little girl runs by with a balloon. Suddenly, an explosion rocks the area and 17 and 18 attack. They seem bored and give the townspeople ten seconds to flee. Once ten seconds are over, the city is leveled. A reporter from CQV observes the attack, reminding his listeners that the Artificial Humans have already destroyed Earth's military and that there is no one left to protect the world from their attacks. In a submarine near Kame House, the Turtle Hermit, Oolong, Pu'er, and Turtle hide while listening to the report of the attack on the radio. The Turtle Hermit is furious and wants to emerge and attack the Artificial Humans himself, but Pu'er and the others talk him out of it; he would be killed, just like the other heroes. But, he wonders, if they cannot be destroyed is there any hope for the future? Back in Pepper Town, 18 enjoys trying on some clothes while a salesman looks on in terror. She walks out with several new outfits as the man begs for his life. As soon as she leaves the building, 17 destroys it. No. 18 is upset, telling her brother that he could at least have spared the clothes. In another part of town, reporters from OBC comment on the destruction before being buzzed by No. 17 careening around in aircar, screaming for everyone to run away.
Some distance away, Bulma and a 14-year old Trunks drive in their own aircar. Bulma knows that Nos. 17 and 18 killed their creator, Doctor Gero. She wonders aloud if anything can be done about them. Just then, Trunks asks her to stop the car and return home without him. She stops but scolds him when she realizes what he is thinking to do, but it does not stop him from flying off to Pepper Town. No. 17 is still running people down with his car as No. 18 looks on, scolding him for playing around. He jumps out of the car, sending it careening into a building. It starts a fire which envelopes a gas station and soon the city is ablaze. Trunks arrives to find that Nos. 17 and 18 are already gone. He cries as he surveys the rubble, finding bodies and a child's rabbit toy. Just then, Gohan arrives, wearing a gi similar to his father's except with a "han" symbol on the back. Trunks asks him why the Artificial Humans are doing this, but he just stands silently.
Later at Capsule Corp Headquarters, Trunks continues crying to Gohan and asks him to train him harder to defeat the Artificial Humans. Gohan agrees, telling the boy that he reminds him of himself when he was younger. Bulma arrives home with groceries, relieved that Trunks is okay. She offers dinner but asks that Gohan and Trunks not do anything dangerous.
Part B
Bulma serves dinner to Gohan and Trunks, remarking on just how much like his father Son Gohan has become. Gohan replies that he made his own gi so that he could feel powerful like his father, but thus far it does not seem to be helping. Bulma says that she has heard stories about Gohan facing off against the Artificial Humans by himself. She does not want Trunks to look up to those stories and be hurt or killed. Despite her admonitions, Gohan trains Trunks, pushing him to reach Super Saiyan. Trunks has an impressive ki, but is unable to transform. The pair spar on a cliff near the ocean and Gohan knocks Trunks into a whirlpool. Trunks calls out for help, but Gohan refuses to offer aid, asking the boy if that is really all he has to give. Trunks eventually scrambles out of the water by himself and Gohan hands him a towel. As they rest for a moment, Trunks asks Gohan to tell him about Vegeta. He has no memories of his father and Bulma does not like to talk about him. Gohan just responds that he was a proud man, strong but difficult to please.
Some time later, the Ox Demon King visits Chi-Chi, both much older but still alive. He tells her that half of the world's population has been killed off since the Artificial Humans attacked, but he has heard stories about Gohan and Trunks fighting against them. Chi-Chi is sad that Gohan never became a scholar. As she looks at a picture taken when Gohan was just a baby, she implores her distant son to return home soon. Meanwhile, Trunks and Gohan are still training at the beach, trying to help Trunks reach Super Saiyan. Gohan tells him that he must be angrier to unlock his power, but Trunks is unable to do it. Even so, Gohan senses that Trunks is powerful-- perhaps even stronger than he is-- and hopes he will one day be able to defeat the Artificial Humans.
Artificial Humans 17 and 18 arrive at an amusement park, the last one left in the world. Nos. 17 and 18 enjoy the rides, including a roller coaster and swings, as the patrons flee in terror. One worker calls the military, but it is too late: the local regiment is dead already. Gohan and Trunks arrive and confront the Artificial Humans. No. 17 comments that it is them again, implying that Gohan and Trunks have faced off against the pair before. No. 17 faces off against Gohan while 18 enjoys a ride on a carousel. Gohan turns into a Super Saiyan and is able to land some blows on 17, but just as it looks like Gohan has him on the ropes, 18 appears and knocks Gohan back. 17 scolds his sister for interfering, but 18 retorts that Gohan had almost killed him. Two against one, they have no problems breaking through Gohan's defenses. To even the odds, Trunks jumps in but he is vastly outclassed as he battles No. 18 on a ferris wheel. She has no problems dodging or blocking every one of his attacks. She toys with him until Trunks manages to land a single kick. Angry now, she knocks Trunks off the ferris wheel, grabs him in midair, and prepares to launch a huge ki blast at his prone figure. Gohan rushes in to stop her, taking the brunt of the attack. He flees with an unconscious Trunks and hides behind some rubble. No. 18 tries to locate the pair, but Gohan remains out of sight. Eventually, she levels the whole area with a ki blast, destroying what remained of the park. Since they can no longer play, the pair fly away. Even if Gohan and Trunks survived the attack, they will see them again soon enough. No need to search.
Underneath the rubble, a bloodied Gohan tries to move. He lost his arm in the explosion, but he is able to crawl to Trunks to see if he is okay. With only one senzu left, he forces Trunks to eat it, telling him that he is their last hope. Gohan collapses into the dust.
Part C
At Capsule Corp, Bulma works on the plans for her Time Machine as Trunks arrives carrying Gohan after their disastrous battle. She calls a doctor to stabilize Gohan and he will survive. She reveals to Trunks that she was aware of his and Gohan's activities. Trunks apologizes, but it does not matter. Soon, she says, her time machine will be complete and Trunks will be able to travel to the past when Son Goku was still alive. Just then, Gohan wakes in terrible pain and curses the Artificial Humans.
Some time later, Trunks is still training to become a Super Saiyan. Even with Gohan's injury, he is unable to get angry enough to transform. Trunks is bathed in a golden aura and his eyes flash green, but he collapses in exhaustion before completing the transformation. Gohan reveals that becoming a Super Saiyan was difficult for him also, but his anger at the deaths of Piccolo and Kuririn took him over the edge. Just then, an explosion rocks the nearby city. Gohan transforms and is about to fly off, but Trunks interrupts and wants to come as well. At first, Gohan says no, but then seems to change his mind, only to knock Trunks unconscious. He thinks to himself that Trunks will be their last hope and capable of defeating the Artificial Humans in a few years; he cannot risk being killed now. He flies off towards the explosions. In the city, No. 17 takes his time destroying the buildings. The Artificial Humans have become bored and No. 18 suggests that they make a game of it as she casually blasts a survivor. Gohan rushes in and catches No. 17 off guard, knocking him into a building and ruining his clothes. No. 18 just laughs at her brother, while No. 17 complains that he has only four more outfits like it left. This time, No. 18 says, they will fight at full power and kill him. Even two-against-one and fighting with only one arm, Gohan seems for a time to have the initiative, but he is eventually exhausted and overpowered by the Artificial Humans. They take him out with a volley of ki blasts and leave his corpse in the street.
Trunks wakes and rushes to the city, but the battle is long over. The Artificial Humans are gone and Son Gohan lies dead. In his anger and despair, Trunks finally transforms into a Super Saiyan!
Part D
Three years later, Trunks arrives at Bulma's makeshift lab, Capsule Corp having been destroyed in the intervening years. She explains that it took eight months to generate enough fuel for one round-trip journey twenty years in the past. Trunks claims that he is already powerful enough to defeat the Artificial Humans and does not need to travel to the past to learn from their departed friends. Bulma disagrees saying that he has not yet surpassed Son Gohan's level and he had been killed. The radio blares out an alert: Nos. 17 and 18 are attacking Bridge Town, only 900 meters south of Metro West. Trunks is concerned about how close they are to the lab. Against Bulma's protests, he straps on his sword and races off to face the Artificial Humans and avenge his master.
Bridge Town has been destroyed and the Artificial Humans are about to leave, but not before Trunks appears as a Super Saiyan. The three of them fight, but even as a Super Saiyan and wielding a sword, Trunks is outclassed. The most he can do is slice off a few of No. 18's hairs. The Artificial Humans seem unfazed by his attacks. Nos. 17 and 18 remark to themselves that even though Trunks is several times more powerful than before, he is still too direct in his techniques. Trunks fires off a ki volley, but the Artificial Humans dodge each blast. Trunks realizes in horror that he is outmatched. The Artificial Humans toy with him, appearing and disappearing, all while Trunks desperately tries to get away. Exhausted, Trunks seems to lose the will to fight. No. 17 blasts him and walks off, but his departure was premature. Trunks gets up again, only to be blasted again by No. 17. Trunks gets up a third time and feebly punches the siblings, but they do not even flinch. They beat him to a pulp before No. 18 asks to land the finishing blow, striking Trunks with a huge ki attack.
Somehow surviving the blast, Trunks wakes up in the hospital five days later. He admits to his mother that he is nowhere near as powerful as the Artificial Humans and he is ready to use the time machine. Bulma tells him the plan: to travel twenty years in the past to give Son Goku his heart medication. Trunks asks about Goku and Bulma flashes back to memories of him when they were younger. She tells Trunks that Goku was always someone you could turn to when things got rough. Trunks also wants to meet his father, but Bulma recommends that he not expect much of him.
Soon, sporting a new message of "Hope!", the time machine is ready. Trunks waves goodbye and blasts off into the past, little realizing the adventure that awaits him.
Epilogue
Over the closing credits, Trunks is depicted defeating Freeza and his father, meeting Son Goku and his friends, and eventually coming face to face with the main timeline's version of Artificial Human 17 and Artificial Human 18.

Production
Tidbits
- Trunks's Timeline takes place 13 years after the arrival of the Artificial Humans, but much of the world is still intact and people go about their lives. There is peace enough that they can still develop new medications. It appears as if the Artificial Humans are taking their time and not causing widespread destruction, instead just ensuring that all humans live in fear of them. But after 13 years of that, half of the world's population has been killed.
- Chi-Chi's picture of her family was taken sometime prior to the arrival of Raditz in Age 761.
- Including main timeline Kuririn's brief appearance over the credits, this is his 250th episode or movie appearance in the series. Only Son Goku and Bulma have been in more episodes up to this point.
