List of FUNimation Dragon Ball Z English Dub (1996-2003) Episodes
|
|
Funimation's English dub of Dragon Ball Z began syndication in 1996, and the voiceover work was contracted out to Ocean Studios in Vancouver, BC (Canada).[a] The first 67 episodes of the original Japanese series were condensed and released as 53 episodes total. This includes at least one episode (Episode 10) that did not air until 1998,[1] the same year that this era of syndication with the Canadian cast came to an end. The broadcast version was released on VHS and DVD; no uncut version was ever released, nor was any subtitled version.[b]
In 1999, Funimation began releasing episodes on Cartoon Network with a new cast hired out of the company's headquarters near Dallas, TX. Because the first 67 episodes had been condensed to 53, the episode count remained off throughout the remainder of the series, even though the episodes were now one-to-one with the original episodes. Another exception followed: episodes 64-66 of the English dub covered episodes 78-81 of the original series; the uncut home release split "Episode 65" into "65a" and "65b". As a consequence, the original English dub of Dragon Ball Z has 276 episodes instead of 291, and the subtitled episodes beginning with "Episode 54" (68) were also released under these numbers.
In 2005, Funimation restored the cut content from the first 67 episodes and redubbed them with the Texas cast. The restored episodes aired on Cartoon Network, and these dates are cross-referenced alongside the original episode numbers in the tables for the first two series below. Even after episode 67, Funimation made extensive changes to their original dub—some parts are redubbed, some lines are added and removed, some musical tracks are altered, and raw audio is otherwise remixed—but it is unclear how much of this was broadcast in 2005-2006, and air dates beyond 67 are not thoroughly documented. This changed audio is used on every release beginning with the "Orange Bricks" (2007-2009 DVD), Funimation's first complete release of the original 291 episodes of Dragon Ball Z.
The original audio can only be found on the series releases listed below. With the exception of the first two series under the Vancouver cast, all DVD releases were uncut, but VHS tapes were sold in two versions: broadcast (censored) and uncut.

Notes
- ↑ After Funimation started casting directly from Texas, many of the same voice actors recorded much of the remainder of Dragon Ball Z for Canadian television and then Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT at the Ocean Group studios called "Blue Water" in Alberta.
- ↑ A subtitled version of Dragon Ball and the first 100-odd episodes of Dragon Ball Z had previously been broadcast on Hawaii's Nippon Golden Network from 1992-1995. Funimation acquired the license in 1994 and began distribution in 1995 with the Vancouver-based BLT Productions dub of the first thirteen episodes of Dragon Ball.
- ↑ This episode did not air during the 1996 syndication. It aired for the first time in 1998 reruns of the series.[1]
- ↑ After this episode, all episodes are one-to-one with the original episodes, though they have different numbers. "Episode 54" incorporates leftover content from the end of Dragon Ball Z Episode 67.
- ↑ 5.0 5.1 Episodes 79 and 80 were heavily censored for violence and combined into a single episode for broadcast, "Episode 65". The uncut home release restored the two episodes, calling them "65a" and "65b".
