"Sorry Robot-san — The Tears that Vanished in the Desert" is the ninth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 28 June 1989, receiving a ratings share of 15.7%. It was written by Katsuyuki Sumisawa and directed by Osamu Kasai.

Synopsis

Falling into a hole out in the desert, Gohan discovers an old robot in some underground ruins. When Gohan activates the dormant robot, it tells him not to interrupt his sleep, but then grudgingly begins to help him out in various ways. When the robot tells how he was buried in sand by an earthquake while conducting an excavation 80 years ago, Gohan tries to dig him out. But the ruins begin to collapse, and the robot sacrifices himself to get Gohan to the surface! Overcoming his sadness, Gohan walks on.

Summary

Part A

After Gohan's rampage as a Great Ape, he wakes up and wonders how he got down from the cliff. He was looking at the moon, and then... (Gohan pees, and the Saber Tiger threatens from a distance) he doesn't remember anything after that. Gohan decides to go wash his face, but when he starts walking, he loses his balance. Then he notices his tail is gone. He figures it got pulled off while he was sleeping, but as he makes his way to the water's edge, he notices he has new clothes. While looking at his reflection in the water, he is attacked by a crocodile. He reaches behind him for something to fend it off and finds the sword Piccolo left him after giving him new clothes. Gohan unsheathes it, and then the tiger joins in the chase, forcing Gohan up a cliff where he is grabbed by a giant bird. The bird gets into a fight with a dinosaur and drops Gohan into a sinkhole.

On the Serpentine Road, Goku runs and wishes he had something to eat.

Meanwhile, Gohan emerges in the cave at the bottom of the sinkhole. He looks around at the drawings on the walls and recognizes a vimana from the Nemurian civilization. Then he trips over a root and looks up to find a robot, which frightens him. He recognizes it as an old capsule robot, a 3-S Series prototype. He powers the robot on and it asks who is there. Gohan introduces himself, and sand starts falling from the cave roof. The robot warns him not to talk so loudly; it only takes small vibrations to bring the sands down. Gohan whispers his name and asks why the robot is down there. The robot tells him it is none of his business; he should shut off its switch and leave. Gohan looks around, and then the robot explains that there is an exit behind it. Gohan excitedly heads for the exit, but then the robot reminds him to turn off the switch first. Gohan turns it off and thanks the robot.

This chasm was repurposed in Episode 6 of the 1996 abridged Funimation dub.

Gohan nearly slides out of the cave exist into a deep chasm. He runs back inside and turns the robot back on, telling it that he cannot get out. The robot says this is not his concern; it told Gohan to turn him off and go. Gohan cries loudly, bringing down more sand. The robot tells him not to cry, but that exit is the only way out. He must jump if he wants to survive; if he stays here he will be buried in sand. As the robot again tells Gohan to go, a snake slithers down from its arm. While Gohan is distracted by the snake, the robot assumes he has left without turning off the switch. It laments the wasted energy, but then Gohan speaks, letting the robot know that he is still there.

Gohan realizes the robot's visual sensors are damaged and he opens it up to fix them, connecting two wires despite the robot's protests. Once the robot can see, it realizes Gohan is a child and wonders why he is in a place like this. Gohan reminds the robot that he cannot get out and asks it to help him. The robot grows angry and tells Gohan not to turn its power on again. Gohan powers off the robot and cries. He sits down near a pillar, crying for his mother. Eventually, Gohan falls asleep while leaning on the deactivated robot.

Part B

Goku continues to sleep on the Serpentine Road, dreaming about food.

Gohan is rudely awakened when a scorpion lands on his chest. He panics and turns on the robot, which immediately chastises him for turning on the power. Gohan tells it there is a scorpion, but the robot tells him that is to be expected, and demands he turn off the power again. Gohan turns it off and looks around, nervous about what else might be lurking.

Goku continues to run along the Serpentine Road, wondering if he can eat the clouds.

Gohan powers on the robot again and tells it he is hungry. The robot chastises him for turning it on for that; he has no reason to expect there to be food here; there are only snakes and scorpions. Gohan cries, and the robot chastises him, and he cries louder. The robot reminds him to be careful and agrees to help him this once. It tells Gohan to search the deep corners for food.

Goku tries eating clouds, and this appears to satisfy him.

Meanwhile, Gohan has found some mushrooms. The robot says that since Gohan does not need it anymore, he should turn the power off again, but Gohan says he cannot eat raw mushrooms. The robot tells him he will not be able to survive in this area like that, but Gohan knows the robot has a cooking system; he read about it in his picture book. The robot is a 3-S type all-purpose capsule robot C-6; the book said it was a superior robot. The robot is chuffed and offers to fry the mushrooms, telling Gohan to open its head and put the mushrooms in. It asks whether he wants them Chinese-style or Western-style, and Gohan says he wants his mother's style. The robot tells him he has no way of knowing what that is, but anyway, the mushrooms are ready. Gohan complains that they are too hot, then he says they taste bad.

The robot asks how Gohan ended up here, and Gohan tells it he is lost; he wants to get back to his mother but he does not know how. The robot tells him he has no chance of crossing the desert, but it will be even harder to live here. Gohan asks the robot how it ended up here, and it tells him it was an accident. There was an investigation to see if this cave could be excavated, and the robot ended up like this. The ground is not stable and earthquakes happen frequently; the robot has been stuck in the sand ever since. Gohan says the Nemurian temple was a great discovery, and the robot asks him how he knows about that. Gohan says he read it in a picture book. Gohan thinks that someone should be along to help them, but the robot tells him that it has been 80 years since it was buried in the sand.

Gohan puts down his bowl, where the snake goes for his last mushroom, and starts digging the robot out of the rocks. The robot protests, telling him that it wishes to stay with this city, but Gohan ignores it, continuing to dig. Gohan wants the robot to escape with him, but the robot tells him that it will be able to store up energy and eventually jump out on its own. Gohan keeps digging and causes the cave to start collapsing in earnest. A pillar falls, and the robot catches it, telling Gohan to get out quickly if he does not want to die. Gohan insists the robot should come with him and continues to dig. The robot reminds him that it is a superior 3-S type; it will be okay. The collapse settles, and the robot tells Gohan to get out while he still can. Gohan goes out the cave while the robot continues to hold the pillar, telling him to summon up his courage and jump.

At the mouth of the cave, Gohan hesitates in fear. The robot encourages him to jump, and he works up his nerve, but when the mountain starts shaking again, he remembers that he forgot to turn off the robot. He rushes back into the cave where he is startled by the snake. The robot lets go of the pillar to swat the snake away, allowing the pillar to fall and trap him, blocking the cave entrance. The robot tells Gohan to open it up and connect a blue wire to a red wire, quickly. Gohan follows its instructions, and the robot warns that there is not much time; the cave is collapsing and its energy is leaking out. When Gohan connects the wires, the robot is able to lift the pillar away from the cave exit. At full power, it tosses the pillar, starting the inevitable collapse of the cave. It grabs Gohan, telling him to be well and tossing him out of the cave.

Gohan barely manages to grab onto the opposite cliff where he watches the robot's cave crumble. He jumps down to the surface, finding the remains of the robot smoldering among the rubble. Crying, Gohan apologizes to the robot. It speaks his name, and Gohan is happy it is still alive, but the robot tells him the last of its energy is almost gone. Gohan tries to dig it out of the sand, but the robot tells him it is no use, and not to cry, even if he is all alone. He cannot rely on anyone else if he is going to survive out here. Gohan cries anyway, and the robot tells him to be quiet as its power finally dies. Gohan tries to power it back on, but nothing happens.

As the sun sets in the west, Gohan walks with tears in his eyes, while his father continues to run alone the Serpentine Road. What will happen next?! The Saiyans are closing in!

Continuity

This episode is entirely filler; no part of it is used in Dragon Ball Kai. However, one scene of Goku sleeping on the Serpentine Road (just after the break) is an expansion of a manga panel on page 14 of Dragon Ball Chapter 208. This panel was directly adapted at the end of Episode 8; in this episode, Goku is still sleeping, but his posture is slightly different.

English dubs

1996

Most of this episode was excised from the original 1996 Funimation dub. Small parts of it were used in Episode 6:

• The scene where Gohan wakes up in the beginning of the episode is adapted to open Episode 6 of the 1996 dub. The events proceed more or less the same until Gohan is dropped by the giant bird and falls into a sinkhole. Instead of the sinkhole, the scene where Gohan almost falls into the chasm outside the robot cave is edited in to make it appear as though the bird will drop him into the chasm. Then footage that was cut from the beginning of the episode is used to show Gohan waking up again, implicitly after his fall.
• The scene at the end of the episode where Gohan's tears blow away in the wind is used to follow the events with the herbivorous dinosaur from Dragon Ball Z Episode 10.

2005

• The "Nemurian civilization" reference is cut; Gohan just says that the cave drawings "look just like something I saw in my history book".
• When Gohan encounters the robot, instead of identifying it as a Capsule Corporation 3-S Series prototype, he says, "What is that thing? And what's it doing way out here in the middle of nowhere?" Later, Gohan recognizes it as a Capsule Corp. robot, but he does not identify the model number or flatter that particular model; he only says that "Capsule Corp. robots are supposed to be the best robots in the whole world", and he suggests that all Capsule Corp. robot models should have a cooking system.
• Instead of saying that it has been stuck there for 80 years, the robot says that Gohan is the first person it has seen in thirty years.
• The robot tells Gohan that connecting the blue wire to the red wire will "route all of my reserve energy into my power cells". This explanation is not given in the original, though it is clear that something like this happened.
• After the cave collapses, the robot tells Gohan, "Don't cry, even when you're all alone." (独りになっても泣くな｡) This is omitted in the dub script.
• At the end of the episode, instead of walking silently as he cries, Gohan thinks to himself: "I don't know if I can make it on my own out here, but I'll try. I will try."
