"The Rebirth of Fusion!! Goku and Vegeta" is the twelfth theatrical film of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The movie premiered as part of the 1995 spring "Toei Anime Fair" on 04 March 1995, along with two other movies from the Slam Dunk and Marmalade Boy series. It was written by series composer Takao Koyama and directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi.

Synopsis

An accident deep within Hell releases years of negative energy, which proceeds to mutate a worker into the monster Janenba. The accident freezes and distorts Hell, and the barrier between the living and the dead falls. Hordes of villains such as Freeza begin attacking Earth. Gohan and his friends handle the escaped villains, while the (now dead) Goku and afterlife warrior Paikuhan deal with Janenba. When he proves to much to handle, Goku is forced to turn Super Saiyan 3. After being badly beaten by Goku, Janenba transforms. Unable to match the newly powered up Janenba, Goku is nearly killed before Vegeta appears to help. His body somehow restored, Vegeta attempts to fight Janenba, but doesn't stand a chance.

Goku manages to convince Vegeta to use the Fusion Dance to defeat Janenba. However, because Vegeta accidentally forgot to extend a finger, a short and rotund fused warrior appears, a result of the flawed dance. Somehow this warrior survives fighting against Janenba just long enough for the fusion to dissipate, giving Goku and Vegeta another chance to fuse. Paikuhan delays Janenba long enough to give the two Saiyans the time they need to fuse, and this time no mistakes were made. A warrior who is neither Goku nor Vegeta appears as a result - Gogeta. He destroys Janenba, and with the source of Hell's chaos gone, the realm is restored to normal. Afterwards, Vegeta's body dissipates, and Goku bids him farewell.

Music

The following table is a scene-by-scene account of the musical tracks used in this episode. The background music is composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi, and our chronological internal catalogue numbers (完全集 Kanzenshuu) apply to tracks composed or arranged by him.

Background music (BGM) tracks generally do not have official titles, but the officially-released tracks do have official catalogue numbers, and these are given when they are known. Official catalogue numbers usually begin with M, but always with letters other than K; they are included in the "Catalogue/Title" column, and our in-house catalogue numbers are substituted when the official number is not known. The documentation and scene descriptions are adapted from The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant.[2]

The opening song "WE GOTTA POWER" and the ending song "The Strongest Fusion" are performed by Hironobu Kageyama.

Notes

  1. The full version of WE GOTTA POWER begins and ends in G Major, but the portion with singing is in the relative minor (E Minor), and the TV-Size version ends in E Minor.
  2. K-2008 begins in F Major and then transitions to the parallel minor (F Minor).
  3. K-2010 begins in F Minor and then transitions to the parallel major (F Major).
  4. K-2011 ends roughly on a B♭7 chord in first inversion, but this is not in a functional context.
  5. K-2013 is made up of a series of broken augmented triads and never settles on a tonal center.
  6. K-2024 dips briefly into F Minor but is mostly centered on the relative major, A♭ Major.
  7. M2025 was probably originally written to cover the defeat of Janemba, but instead M2015 was substituted for the action scene. The beginning part of M2025 that was cut from the film is in F Minor, but the ending part that was used for Vegeta's farewell scene is in F Major.
