"The Galaxy at the Brink!! The Super Incredible Guy" is the ninth theatrical film of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The movie premiered as part of the 1993 Summer "Toei Anime Fair" on 10 July 1993. It was written by series composer Takao Koyama and directed by Yoshihiro Ueda.

Synopsis

The Money Family is hosting a martial arts tournament, but everything goes terribly wrong when Bojack and his minions show up in the final stages. The Z Warriors are handily defeated, leaving Son Gohan to face off against Bojack all alone. Can Gohan’s newly obtained Super Saiyan 2 transformation save the day?

Summary

Prologue

At an airport, a staircase descends from an advanced-looking aircraft.[a] Four strange-looking warriors come out while a female ZTV reporter reveals that they are aliens, the strongest warriors from the four galaxies. They have arrived to participate in the Tenka'ichi Dai Budō Taikai.

In a tropical city some distance away, the news report is broadcast on a large screen at a press event. Other ZTV reporters ask Gyōsan Money about the tournament. He and his wife announce that the tournament is a present to their son, Doru, on his tenth birthday. Doru is a huge fan of Mister Satan; he wears a Mister Satan pin and plays with a Satan action figure while his parents are speaking. The Producer explains that Gyōsan Money is the richest man in the world and that he will be sponsoring the largest martial arts tournament ever staged. All martial artists are invited to attend and the prize will be 100 million zeni, while runners up will win tours of the hot springs of the world. On the Serpent Road, Bubbles, Gregory, and Kaiō have set up camp. Bubbles adjusts a small satellite dish so that they can get better reception on a tiny portable television set. Gyōsan Money further announces that the winner will be given the chance to challenge the savior of the world, Mister Satan himself!

A group of reporters watch a door for Mister Satan to emerge, but he surprises them by appearing in a helicopter high above. He is dressed in his flashiest championship regalia, including his championship belt. He tosses down a capsule containing nearly two dozen tiles and leaps down from the helicopter to break them all in mid-air. (We do not see if he smashed through all of them, but the next scene shows him blowing on his aching red hand.)

Meanwhile, on the Serpentine Road, Son Goku emerges from a building with a handful of fruit. He is surprised to learn, but not unhappy, that Mister Satan has been given credit for defeating Cell at the Cell Games.

Preliminary Battles

An announcer reminds the crowd of the rules as a series of preliminary battles are waged on Battle Island: there are 200 contestants all vying to face off against Mister Satan in the finale. To select that challenger, the contestants first face-off in eight simultaneous "Battle Royales" to enter the semi-finals. Contestants may be eliminated by falling from the stage, being knocked out, or giving up. Killing and weapons are strictly forbidden. While this is being explained, Dosukoi, a sumo wrestler, battles in his first match and narrowly avoids being pushed out of bounds, but recovers and tosses a group of opponents off instead. Mister Satan and the Money family watch over the event in a special luxury box that allows them to move around the battlefield to observe all of the competitions.

On a set of moving platforms, Kuririn rapidly and cheerfully knocks out a half dozen opponents while imagining what he will do with the prize. He hears Chi-Chi calling to Gohan from the audience and his face drops. How can he win against a Super Saiyan? From off to his right, he hears Piccolo competing as well. Even Future Trunks is here! Kuririn had hoped that that only Yamcha and Tenshinhan attended so that he would have had a chance at the prize.

In the stands, Chi-Chi tells Bulma, with an infant Trunks in tow, that Gohan is competing to keep up his strength due to spending so much time studying. Bulma admits that she hoped to take the hot springs tour prize with her family, especially now that Trunks has returned victorious from the future. Bulma also reveals that Vegeta has lost the will to fight since Goku died. In another section of the crowd, Chiaotzu cheers on Tenshinhan while Oolong roots for Kuririn. The Turtle Hermit ignores the battle, instead climbing a pole to get a better look at all of the beautiful women in the audience. He claims that he doesn't need to watch since he already knows that Gohan or Trunks will be the winner, and he's going to look for D-cups instead. He approaches a group of young women with a lecherous look on his face; they scream. On the Serpentine Road, Son Goku and Kaiō watch the tournament on TV at their makeshift home on the road. Goku is sad that he is unable to complete himself, but is excited to see how Gohan and Trunks fare.

Back at the tournament, Yamcha relaxes on a pillar while the fighters battle it out far below. He complains that he had to borrow money to attend in the hope of winning the 100,000,000 zeni prize.[b] Unknown to Yamcha, one of the battle cameras has noticed him and broadcasts his relaxing to the tournament audience. Chi-Chi and Bulma lament that he doesn't even try, before arguing over whether Future Trunks or Gohan is more powerful. Far below, Dosukoi cleans up the rest of his first round competitors. Completely by accident, he knocks over the pillar that Yamcha is laying on, sending him careening into the water and disqualification.

On a different battle stage above, Son Gohan knocks competitor after competitor off his platform. He remarks to himself that his father got stronger while participating in the Tenka'ichi Budōkai and so can he! In the moving luxury box, Mister Satan chokes on his food when Gohan is announced as the first contestant to pass the preliminaries. His mouth remains agape as Trunks, Kuririn, Piccolo, and Tenshinhan advance as well. Dosukoi, Udō, and Kung-fun also win their matches. Mister Satan despairs at his chances of victory and tries to leave, but a reporter asks him for his impressions of the semi-finalists. Satan turns on the bravado and replies that they could all use more training.

Semi-Finals

The semi-final battles.

The announcer reveals the line-ups for the semi-finals: Udō vs Son Gohan, Tenshinhan vs Future Trunks, Piccolo vs Kuririn, and Dosukoi vs Kung-fun.

On their battle stage, Udō towers over Gohan. He promises not to be easy on the boy, but Gohan's cheerful agreement takes him aback. As soon as the match begins, Gohan foot sweeps and knocks Udō out of the ring. The challenger crashes through a nearby outcropping of rock before splashing into the water. Mister Satan looks on, speechless.

Trunks and Tenshinhan fight next. Tenshinhan asks Trunks to not go easy on him as the battle begins. The pair careen around the island in a flurry of movement before taking to the air, to the astonishment of the audience. Tenshinhan nearly lands a kiko-ho, but only succeeds in knocking part of the arena into the ocean. The battle is fierce and the competitors appear evenly matched; Tenshinhan lands a solid punch to Trunks's face while they hover inches above the water and the boy is nearly disqualified. They gain altitude and Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan! In his luxury box, a reporter asks Mister Satan about Trunks's ability to change hairstyles. He reveals that it is a quick-change trick like in a kabuki play. At his home in West City, Vegeta turns off the TV coverage of the battle in disgust. As a Super Saiyan, Trunks tanks through ki blast after ki blast from Tenshinhan. Quickly getting behind, Trunks strikes a single fast blow to Tenshinhan's back and sends him flying into the water. With a smile, Trunks extends his hand to help Tenshinhan out of the water; they both seem pleased with the match. Mister Satan panics that strong fighters came to his "dinky" tournament and feigns a stomachache. He leaves the luxury box and tries to sneak off of the island, but crowds of his fans yelling "Satan! Satan!" at every turn makes stealth impossible.

Kuririn is a nervous wreck before his battle and worries that Piccolo will not hold back. From a viewing area above, Son Gohan wishes Piccolo luck much to Kuririn's chagrin. When the buzzer sounds, Kuririn flies at Piccolo full speed and somehow misses, careening off the battle stage and nearly into the water. He catches himself at the last moment and flies back up. Piccolo dismisses Kuririn by saying that he hoped to see stronger fighters at the tournament. He grabs Kuririn and tosses him into the ring before flying off and forfeiting the match. On the Serpentine Road, Goku plays Old Maid with Bubbles and Gregory while Kaiō watches the match. Goku asks how everyone is doing and Kaiō remarks that Gohan and the others are doing fine. In the background, they hear that Douskoi won his match against Kung-fun and the finals can begin.

Somewhere in the bowels of Battle Island, Mister Satan emerges from a manhole. He's finally found the exit! He makes a break for it, but the producer appears and tells him that the dispensary is the other direction. Satan begs off that he's actually leaving to find his personal physician, but it is too late: Battle Island is moving and they are on their way now to Battle Island II.

Interrupted Finals

The four finalists emerge onto a gigantic step-pyramid in a massive stadium with many thousands of onlookers. Trunks, Gohan, and Kuririn are each embarrassed by the "supportive" yells from their friends and family in the audience. The announcer reveals the rules: this will be a timed battle as each of the four finalists will be sent randomly to one of four battle stages to face off against an "intergalactic warrior" (in reality, a student from Mister Satan's school). Whichever finalist wins first and returns to the main stage first wins the match the right to face Mister Satan. Kuririn is thrilled as it means he could win without facing Gohan directly. A timer counts down and all four are rocketed to their custom-built battle stages: Gohan is taken (apparently) to a world of toys, Kuririn to the inside of a volcano, Trunks to an idyllic and flower-filled scene on the banks of a river, and Dosukoi jets off to a desert.

Kuririn locates his opponent first, a red-haired woman (Zangya). He assumes that she will be a pushover, but she quickly and effortlessly knocks him to the ground. Dosukoi doesn't even see his competitor, a green-skilled man with a mohawk (Bido), as he is grabbed and strangled to death. The producers and audience realize that the tournament has been infiltrated and panic, fleeing Battle Island. Yamcha and Tenshinhan run the other way, boarding cars to join the battles with their friends.

In his battle stage, not yet realizing that anything is amiss, Trunks pauses to sniff the flowers. A red ki blast nearly hits him and Trunks calls out to Gokua, an alien with green skin and orange hair reclining in a tree. Trunks claims that they are not supposed to kill each other; she responds only by coming down to face him directly. At the first, the pair appear evenly matched (with Trunks still in his base form), but Gokua pushes his advantage by fighting with his sword. Trunks asks who he is and Gokua responds that he is just a "Galactic Warrior". Sensing their battle at a stalemate, Gokua transforms into a bulkier form with red hair. The two resume their attack.

In a world of vintage toys, Gohan looks on in amazement but dodges just in time as gigantic blocks nearly crush him. Bujin descends from the sky and attacks Gohan with telekinesis by spinning the hands of a clock and sending them flying. Goku dodges and reminds his opponent that this is only a tournament, but Bido laughs and tells him that it is not a game. His illusion powers appear to fade and the world of toys is replaced by a mushroom forest.

Back on Battle Island, the producer bangs on a bathroom door and begs Mister Satan to come out. Satan is inside sitting on the toilet, trembling in fear. He thinks to himself that he just needs to buy enough time and that the stronger fighters will defeat the interlopers for him.

Gokua smashes Trunks through a wall and into a new battle zone that looks like a European-style city, plowing him through a bridge, into a river, and then out through buildings once again. Trunks collapses to the ground in exhaustion and pain. Gokua pulls out his sword and strikes the finishing blow, but just then Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan and blocks it with his arm. In a matter of seconds, he breaks the sword and plunges his arm into Gokua's chest, killing him. Trunks senses a presences behind him but turns too late as he is knocked unconscious by a kick from a mysterious combatant. At Capsule Corp Headquarters, Vegeta senses that his son is down and looks at at his sword, still sitting in his room in West City. On the Serpentine Road, Goku senses the great ki that just took out Trunks and catches a glimpse of his face from afar: another green-skinned alien, Bojack. Meanwhile, Gohan continues his fight against Bujin while the production staff desperately pleads with Mister Satan to come out of the bathroom. Satan hears the cries of his fans and realizes that he has no choice but to come out. He marches out of the bathroom with his head held high and toilet paper still hanging off his clothes. He is pushed into his special capsule to speed off to the battle.

Kaiō tells Goku that the Earth is in great danger. He tells Goku that Bojack was a thug with an evil ki who once attempted to destroy all four of the galaxies. He was, Kaiō tells Goku, even more evil than Demon King Piccolo. Kaiō, plus his counterparts in the south, east, and west galaxies, sealed him up at a planet at the edge of the galaxy: Kaiō's Planet. By destroying his planet and killing Kaiō during the Cell Games, Goku (and Cell) freed Bojack from his prison. Kiaō is shocked however that he would have immediately gone to Earth.

Battle Against Bojack's Team

Gohan flees from Bujin and arrives at an area resembling a destroyed city. He senses Kuririn's ki and descends into a ruined building to find Trunks and Kuririn, both unconscious, as well as Zangya, Bido, and Bojack himself. Moments later, Yamcha and Tenshinhan arrive, followed by the pursuing Bujin. The assembled alien fighters announce that the Earth now belongs to Bojack! They selected Earth as the capital of their new empire as it is the most beautiful planet in the North Galaxy. Tenshinhan flies after Bujin, but he is knocked easily into a wall. Yamcha faces Zangya, but she (with an assist from Bido) takes him out immediately and deposits him in the pile of unconscious heroes. Only Gohan remains standing. He transforms into a Super Saiyan and the battle resumes!

Gohan flies backward to avoid Zangya and Bido, elbowing Bujin away in the process before launching himself up and through a wall. Bido catches up, but Gohan throws him then launches a ki attack at Zangya. She blocks it with the back of her hand. Bido launches a flurry of ki attacks that miss Gohan but blow a hole in the "sky", revealing the wall between this zone and the adjacent desert zone, where Dosukoi's battle was held. Bido and Zangya push Gohan through a different segment of the wall/sky, crashing through and into the European city zone. Gohan spars with Bujin and Zangya on the scaffolding of a building under construction. They force him down through the scaffold and through a stack of Roman-style aqueducts, before landing on a roof. Gohan and his three foes trade blows around the city while Bojack looks on with dismissive admiration: Gohan will never be able to beat them with his current power. Bido knocks Gohan down to street level then lobs a giant red ki ball at him, leveling much of the city. Trunks senses his former master's plight and struggles to get up. Even Son Goku, in the afterlife, urges Gohan to get angry and show his true strength. Bido and the others blast Gohan with ki bullets until he falls and drops out of Super Saiyan.

Bojack launches a giant ki blast to finish off Gohan, but it is deflected by an unexpected makankosappo. Piccolo has returned! He removes his weighted clothes and launches himself directly at Bojack. The two trade blows, seemingly evenly-matched, as they push each other into buildings and deflect ki attacks. Bujin launch sneak attack from behind which knocks Piccolo into a building. He falls as Bojack prepares to finish him off. Gohan runs to try to catch up but isn't going to make it. Trunks suddenly appears and blocks the attack! Gohan catches Piccolo as Trunks takes the offensive against Bojack, but the warrior creates a barrier to block all of Trunks' ki blasts. Bujin snags Trunks in his telekinetic threads and the boy is unable to move. His energy quickly drained, Trunks falls out of Super Saiyan. Bido throws a metal spike at Trunks to finish him off, but someone throws Trunks' sword, blocking the blow and cutting the energy strands in one swoop. Trunks grabs his sword in midair while a ki explosion erupts out from under Bujin and Bido and levels the building they were standing on. It's Vegeta!

Vegeta announces that Bojack is his and attacks with a flurry of ki blasts. He and Bojack trade attacks as the city crumbles around them. From afar, Trunks is in awe that Vegeta is fighting again; he seemingly lost the will to fight after Goku died. Vegeta tries to catch one of Bojack's energy blasts, but fails and is knocked down into the streets. Trunks tries to help, but is blocked both by Bujin and Zangya as well as by his father's screams to "stay out of this". Vegeta gets pummeled by Bojack and seems to nearly fall into unconsciousness. Trunks catches him, but earns only an elbow to the gut and a reminder that he is not to interfere. Moments later, Vegeta has lost Super Saiyan and is beaten into a clock tower by Bojack. Bojack screams and transforms, gaining muscle mass and his blue-green skin turning a lighter green. His bandana flies off as he prepares to beat Vegeta some more. Across the city, Trunks battles Zangya, but Bujin sneaks up on him again and catches him in another psychic web. Helpless to resist, Zanga hammers into him. Gohan also tries to help Vegeta, but is blocked by Bido. From afar, the remaining spectators watch the battle on giant monitors as Mister Satan launches towards the battlefield. Bojack personally plants a ki ball blast directly into Trunks' chest, knocking him to the ground unconscious once again. Gohan and Bojack trade rapid-fire blows all around the city. Bujin, Zangya, and Bido jointly catch him in another psychic web, revealing that Gohan will loses power the more that he struggles. Gohan quickly drops out of Super Saiyan once again. Bojack commends him on his prowess as he pummels the boy. The arrival of Satan's pod distracts the fighters and, completely by accident, it cuts the psychic thread that held Gohan. It also knocks out the cameras so that the spectators in the arena cannot see the remainder of the battle. Gohan powers up and begins a 1-on-4 attack against Bojack and his men. It is futile. Gohan is beaten to the ground and locked into a bear hug by Bojack. In the afterlife, Goku begs Kaiō to let him do something but Kaiō refuses. Bojack taunts Gohan that he will see his father again very soon as he squeezes the life out of him.[c] Gohan's cries echo around the city, but there is no one to help: Piccolo, Trunks, and Vegeta are all unable to move. Gohan calls out to his father as he lapses into unconsciousness.

Son Goku cannot take it anymore and teleports to the battlefield despite Kaiō's protests and punches Bojack. The villain recoils in surprise and drops Gohan who is surrounded in a yellow light as he falls. Goku lowers Gohan to the ground and tells him to stop being a baby and fight! Gohan awakens and his father is gone. Was it all a dream? Gohan stands up and tells Bojack and his men that they will not get away with this. His yellow auro is surrounded with lightning: Super Saiyan 2! He announces to the assembled villains that his father told him to protect the Earth. Yellow ki and lightning flare up around the whole of Battle Island II and the spectators cover themselves in panic. Gohan advances slowly on Bojack and his team. Bujin and Bido attempt to catch Gohan in their psychic web, but he effortlessly walks through the strands. In seconds and in terrible silence, the battle is over: Gohan rips Bido in two with one punch, then does the same to Bujin with one kick. Zangya panics and considers fleeing, but Bojack blasts her from behind, killing his own teammate. He launches a giant ki blast at Gohan but the boy is unfazed. Without a moment's hesitation, Gohan plunges his fist straight through Bojack's body. Bojack gasps in pain and prepares a final ki attack, but Gohan counters with a kamehameha. Their powers clash and Gohan rushes forward... Bojack is defeated! Gohan collapses in exhaustion as his father proudly congratulates from from afar.

Days later the news reports say that Mister Satan saved the Earth a second time while Kuririn and the others recover in a hospital. Kuririn complains that they never get the credit, but Gohan is okay with it. After all, he did help a bit. They laugh and Gohan thinks that he may have caught a glimpse of his father outside his window. As Oolong congratulates Gohan, he almost reveals that Goku came back to help him... only to laugh it off as a joke. On the roof, Piccolo and Vegeta sulk together.

Tidbits

  • Included among the fictional news organizations covering the Tenka'ichi Dai Budō Taikai announcement was the real-world Tokyo Sports
  • The exterior and interior of Battle Island feature dozens of flags including both real-world and imaginary countries. A complete list can be found here.
  • While playing cards in the afterlife, Goku's deck includes Pilaf as the king, Mai as the queen, Shuu as the jack, and Fortune-telling Crone as the joker. This is one of a very small number of references to the Pilaf Gang during the Dragon Ball Z era. The game that he is playing is baba-nuki (ババ抜き), the Japanese variation of "Old Maid".
  • One of the background fighters in the tournament is wearing a Battle Ball mask, first seen in Dragon Ball Z Episode 144.
  • During Bujin's initial attack on Gohan, he creates an imaginary world of toys for the pair to fight in. These toys include many vintage toys from the United States including Amos 'n' Andy, Charlie McCarthy, and Winnie-the-Pooh.
  • The Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz is seen attending the tournament, just as he did in the Tenka'ichi Budōkai in Dragon Ball Chapter 42.

Battle Zones

Dialog in the film implies that there were five "Battle Zones" on Battle Island II, one for each of the penultimate battles (called "north", "south", "east", and "west" although it is not clear which is which in the film) and one for the final showdown with Mister Satan. However, a total of six battle environments are shown. This discrepancy is not explained. Each of the zones also includes a tower in the background, however the function of this tower is also not elaborated on in the film.

Closing Credits

The closing credits featured several photographs, presumably from the Son home, that document Gohan's life up to this point in the story.

Photo Notes Visual Reference
Son Goku and Chi-Chi hold up an infant Gohan. Gohan is in the same outfit as his infant flashback in episode 171; he never appeared at this age in the manga. This photo would have been taken in Age 757.
Son Goku and Gohan (with the four-star ball) wave next to an ocean. This is taken directly from chapter 196 of the manga. The equivalent scene in Z episode two depicts Gohan as being more scared and clutching against his father during his wave than shown here. This photo would have been taken November 28, Age 761.
Son Gohan, badly injured from sparring, rests at the base of a cliff with Piccolo. This is during the pair's fighting session as depicted in chapter 210 and Z episode 19, although Gohan's sword is absent from the photo. In the original scene, Piccolo sat next to Gohan rather than stand aloof. It is unclear in context who could have taken this photo but it would have been taken sometime in late Age 761 or Age 762.
Son Gohan, wearing his schoolboy outfit, is ready to go to Namek. This is a taken from a scene in chapter 245 or Z episode 38, although neither scene exactly matches the composition of this one. This photo would have been taken in November 4, Age 762.
Son Goku and Son Gohan, both Super Saiyans, relax together before the Cell Games. This is taken from the title page of chapter 391 although that illustration features the pair against a white background, implying the Room of Spirit and Time, while the photograph depicts them outdoors. There is no point in the manga where Son Goku and Gohan are relaxing outside while wearing these clothes: they wear them immediately after leaving God's Temple to visit Korin and Kame House, and then immediately before the Cell Games. All of the other "relaxation" sequences prior to the Cell Games shows one or both of them wearing different clothes.

Notes

  1. Although not clearly depicted in the close-up shots, the "spacecraft" resembles a Namekian spacepod when seen later on the TV. Exactly how Mister Satan would have known to design it this way is unrevealed.
  2. Although the value of zeni is not consistent in the anime, it usually approximates that of the Japanese yen. In that case, 100,000,000 zeni would be approximately one million dollars.
  3. It is not revealed in the film how Bojack knows of Son Goku or his family. This is the first reference given to him targeting Gohan rather than simply defeating the Earth's defenders prior to conquest.
  4. K-1602 shifts to the parallel minor (F Minor) when the title card appears.
  5. K-1609 transitions to F Minor when the contestants reach their battle zones, and ends with transitional diminished chords.
  6. M1620 ends in the parallel minor (C Minor).
  7. The exact timeframe for this film is not explicitly given except that it is after the Cell Games, after Future Trunks returned to the future and then came back, but prior to Chi-Chi being obviously pregnant with Son Goten. It is therefore at most a couple of months after May 26, Age 767, the date of the Cell Games.
