Synopsis
Chi-Chi proposes that they hold a birthday party for Gohan, who became 11 years old while in the Room of Spirit and Time. After coincidentally finding an album, Chi-Chi recalls when they named Gohan. Goku sees a hole in a large tree, and remembers the time that Gohan's baby carriage slipped down the hill. The young Gohan fired an amazing ki, and pierced the tree! That night, with the Ox Demon King and Kuririn there, they celebrate Gohan's birthday.
Summary
Part A
At Goku's house on Mount Paozu, Goku, Gohan, and Kuririn are eating and sharing stories while Chi-Chi washes dishes. Kuririn finishes telling a funny story about how he and Yajirobe became friends, but while laughing Gohan loses control of his power and breaks his glass. Moments later, Goku tries to demonstrate controlling his power to Gohan, only to break his glass and cause extensive damage throughout the room. Chi-Chi gets angry and demands that they stop being Super Saiyan at meal time or else they will run out of dishes. Chi-Chi also announces that she is planning an 11th birthday party for Gohan that day-- his actual birthday happened while he was training in the Room of Spirit and Time-- and that Goku needs to leave before he damages anything else. Kuririn agrees to go with him and Gohan wants to go too, but even Goku agrees with Chi-Chi that he should stay home to study. Chi-Chi is shocked and checks to see if he has a fever. Some time later, Chi-Chi is preparing a cake for Gohan and wondering what Goku is really up to that he would agree that Gohan needed to study.
Nearby, Goku and Kuririn are relaxing near a river. Goku catches and rides a fish down a waterfall; Kuririn remarks that he's acting just like a kid again. Kuririn asks Goku why he agreed that Gohan should study and Goku replies that he is uncertain if they can defeat Cell in eight days. He wants Gohan to spend as much time as he can with his mother until then.

Back at the house, Chi-Chi is searching in the cabinets for a table cloth when she discovers her old family photo album. She flips through it, seeing scenes from her wedding and Gohan as a newborn. Chi-Chi flashes back to a scene where Gohan is sleep in his crib while she, Goku, and her father are discussing names for the baby. She wants "Einstein", but Gohan begins to cry. When she suggests "Archimedes", he cries again. She asks her father if he has any suggestions and he unrolls a long list of them, all containing the 牛 (gyu) particle from his title. Gohan doesn't seem to like those either. After some period of time, they realize that Goku hasn't suggested any names and push him to come up with one. Goku replies that he is hungry. Chi-Chi argues with him, complaining that he just had breakfast (朝ごはん, asagohan). Gohan laughs. She wants him to wait for lunch (昼ごはん, hirugohan). Gohan laughs again. The Ox King realizes what is going on and repeats those words to the baby, causing him to laugh each time. The baby even laughs at gohan (ごはん) on its own. Looking at the Four-star ball, Goku realizes that Gohan wants to be named for Grandpa Gohan. Chi-Chi at first seems disappointed that he is not named for a scientist, but is happy seeing Goku playing with the baby and calling him by his new name. Chi-Chi puts the photo album away and tells Gohan that he can stop studying and go play with his father.
Part B
At the Cell Games arena, some reporters from KBC approach Cell and ask him for an interview. The lead reporter asks where Cell comes from, what his true motivations for the Cell Games are, what area he will destroy first, and whether he would chase any people that tried to escape in a rocket. Cell refuses to answer, launching a beam at the cameramen and knocking the interviewer out of the ring. He does not kill any of them.
Back in the forest, Gohan has joined Goku and Kuririn in gathering fruit. Goku locates a large tree and applies a small amount of ki to cause all of the apples to fall out of the tree. Gohan quickly speeds around the tree, catching every apple before it can hit the ground. Goku sees a single apple that get caught in a crook in the tree's trunk and flashes back to when Gohan was a toddler, his parents pushing him through the woods in a stroller. While watching some birds, Goku mistakenly releases the stroller, causing it and Gohan to roll down a large hill. Goku and Chi-Chi chase after, but are unable to catch up. When Goku tries to speed up, he overshoots the stroller. Gohan hits a bump and is propelled into the air, crashing into the tree where they would later collect the apples. Although his stroller is destroyed, Gohan unleashes his hidden power right before striking the tree, causing the hole that Goku will later rediscover. Chi-Chi is relieved that Gohan is not injured and thanks his father, but Goku replies that he did not save him. Back in the present, Goku apologizes to the tree as they walk away.
Later that night, Gohan and his family celebrate his 11th birthday. While blowing out his candles, Gohan mistakenly blows too hard and disintegrates the cake and covers everyone with it. Outside in the yard, the Captain Ginyu croaks with tears in his eyes. Chi-Chi gets mad at first, but then she decides that since he is also Goku's son that it just can't be helped. The episode closes with new pictures being added to the family scrap book, including a picture of Gohan with his birthday present: a telescope.
At the Cell Games grounds, Cell smiles and awaits the tournament in eight more days.
