"Extreme Battle!! The Three Great Super Saiyans" is the seventh theatrical film of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The movie premiered as part of the 1992 Summer "Toei Anime Fair" on 11 July 1992, along with two movies from the Rokudenashi Blues and Dragon Quest series. It was written by series composer Takao Koyama and directed by Katsuhito Kikuchi.

Synopsis

After Dr. Gero is killed by No. 17, his computer activates his earlier creations. No. 13, No. 14, and No. 15 have orders to kill Son Goku, who is shopping with the family. As the battle ensues, No. 13 undergoes a terrifying transformation. Can the three Super Saiyans stop No. 13 from completing his mission?!

Summary

Prologue

A peaceful scene in the mountain wilderness is interrupted by an explosion! A cave in a cliff wall explodes out in a green ball of ki with red lightning. Inside, Doctor Gero struggles against the hand of Artificial Human No. 17 which has been plunged through his chest. Gero's right arm has been severed and he seems powerless against his assailant. Nearby No. 18 smirks and watches on. No. 17 pulls out his hand and, despite the doctor's protests, lops off his head in a roundhouse kick. No. 17 crushes the head under his foot to finish the job.

Fluids drain from Doctor Gero's body and drip down through a hole in the floor to a hidden lab underneath. The camera pans down to reveal a computer in the sealed off lab, still running a program to create the most powerful Artificial Human. Three pods line the wall as the computer softly chirps to itself in the background.

Film

Some time later, a metropolis is bustling at the open of a Summer Bazaar with packed streets filled with festive people. At what appears to be a conference center, Oolong, Turtle Hermit, Kuririn, and Future Trunks are standing alone in line for the "World's Most Beautiful Girl" competition. The Turtle Hermit complains that it hasn't started yet, but Oolong scolds him for being the one that wanted to line up early for a 7:00 PM competition. The Hermit says that he needs to sit at the front to have the best view of the beautiful girls and begins to daydream about their bathing suit-clad bodies. Kuririn and Trunks, who brought his sword to a beauty contest, just look embarrassed. Oolong begins to share the Hermit's excitement and starts daydreaming too. Kuririn scolds them both for misbehaving in front of Trunks and sullying his pure heart. The Turtle Hermit reminds him that only a short time earlier, Kuririn was the one wanted to sneak into the women's changing rooms to catch a glimpse! Kuririn insists that he was just kidding! The Turtle Hermit calls him on it and rushes off with Oolong to find the changing rooms. At first he protests and says that he will call the police, but a moment later his resolve breaks and he follows the pair backstage. Trunks, more than a little embarrassed, is stuck waiting in line alone.

At the nearby Good Fortune shopping center, Son Gohan and Son Goku carry an enormous collection of bags and stacked boxes up an escalator. They arrive on the shopping floor to discover Chi-Chi in battle with other women to secure the best bargains at a clothing sale. Goku asks Gohan why women enjoy shopping so much; Gohan replies that his mother uses shopping as stress relief. Chi-Chi tosses more boxes onto Goku's incredible stack, winning applause from a clerk and passers-by.

Artificial Humans Nos. 14 and 15 emerge searching for Son Goku.

Out in the street, an explosion sends the crowd fleeing in terror. Two Artificial Humans, wearing the insignia of the Red Ribbon Army emerge from the smoke and walk calmly towards the fleeing mob. The first is tall and muscular, with gray skin and a long ponytail. The second is shorter, with sunglasses, a bowtie, and an oversized green hat. Seemingly oblivious to the chaos around them, they pass through an intersection and send cars careening out of their way. They walk through buildings, smashing through walls without a second thought as they advance on their unknown destination. They ignore everyone until they are approached by a police car, which they chop into two without pausing with an energy blast. Explosions rip across the city until their ultimate destination comes into view: the shopping center with Goku and his friends. Only now does the shorter one speak for the first time, revealing their goal: Son Goku.

Goku and his friends share a meal in the restaurant on top of the shopping center. Goku makes fun of the Turtle Hermit and others for lining up for the beauty pageant a day early; Kuririn agrees that it seemed strange that they were the only ones there. No longer walking directly, the two Artificial Humans pass through the shopping center. The shorter one smiles when his face appears on some display televisions, but they explode as the taller one passes. Seemingly tired of escalators, the pair blow the doors off of an elevator and ascend up the shaft, smashing their way through the floor of another department, before finally detecting Goku in their scans. They stand one level below the restaurant where Goku and his friends are eating and launch an energy blast through ceiling. The building begins to shake and everything seems momentarily weightless before the entire area is wiped out in a gigantic blast.

At the last moment, Gohan escapes carrying his mother, while Kuririn, Trunks, and Goku each carry stacks of patrons and their friends. Goku deposits his group on a nearby rooftop and surveys the destruction, catching the two Artificial Humans powering up a second attack. He recognizes it as an attempt on his life and orders his friends to fly away from him as fast as possible. Goku flees just as two energy balls fly from the ruined building. He dodges easily and the two Artificial Humans fly out to follow him, providing Goku with his first look at his adversaries. Taking stock of the situation, they all pause in mid-flight. Goku asks his assailants who they are, but the short one just smirks and drinks from a flask that he keeps in his jacket. Goku speculates that since they have no ki, they must be Artificial Humans created by Doctor Gero. (The Red Ribbon Army logos on their clothes may also have been a giveaway.) The two Artificial Humans finish analyzing Goku and engage him directly, the short one distracting him with an energy blast while the larger approaches for hand-to-hand fighting. Goku and No. 14 spar for a moment, but No. 15 sneaks in and knocks Goku down into the city below.

Goku emerges from the rubble and flies off, but the pair of Artificial Humans have no difficulty outmaneuvering him and knocking him into a nearby building. Goku becomes trapped in the side of the damaged structure as the Artificial Humans pummel him with energy attacks until Trunks comes to his rescue. With two opponents now, No. 15 focuses his attacks on Trunks while No. 14 stays with Goku. Trunks implores Goku to move the battle as there will be too many casualties in a populated area; he suggests the glacial belt where they will be able to fight alone. Goku agrees and takes off at high speed, and the Artificial Humans follow close behind.

As sires wail in the damaged city, Son Gohan and Kuririn watch the battle from afar. Gohan wants to help, but Kuririn tells him that their power levels are too low. Goku continues to protest until Chi-Chi appears. She reminds her son that he needs to stay and study; he starts summer cram school tomorrow! Gohan retorts that his father's life is more important than studying and takes off, leaving his very angry mother behind. Kuririn intends to stay behind, but Chi-Chi won't let him abandon her husband and son. Kuririn reluctantly flies towards the battle.

In Doctor Gero's lab, the computer continues to chirp away and seems to finish something. The pod marked "13" opens, revealing a third Artificial Human, but only his glowing eyes can be seen in the dark. He has only one name on his lips, "Son Goku".

Goku and Trunks fly past columns of ice in the glacial belt, but Artificial Humans Nos. 14 and 15 have somehow gotten ahead of them, crashing through the ice to block their escape. Goku is pleased that, now that they are away from civilization, they can fight at full power. No. 15 scans and recognizes Goku's comrade as Trunks[a], then attacks. Trunks is knocked away from the action, allowing the pair of Artificial Humans to focus on Goku together. They beat the (still base-form) Goku into the wall and he collapses, exhausted, onto the ice.

Suddenly, a new voice rings out across the ice, shouting that Goku is not the warrior that he expected. Goku and Trunks ascend to discover the source of the taunt: it's another Artificial Human, No. 13, a tall muscular man wearing a Red Ribbon Army vest and a RR-branded Trucker hat. No. 13 reveals that they were created by Doctor Gero's computer which retained their creator's drive to kill Goku. While they are only programmed to kill Son Goku, they will not hesitate to kill anyone that defends him. No. 13 reveals the numbers of No. 14 and No. 15 for the first time before sending them both off to face Trunks. Gohan and Kuririn arrive and watch the battle, but Kuririn chickens out and doesn't immediately join in. No. 13 launches a huge ball of red energy at Goku which pushes him through the ice into the frigid water below. Explosions of ice suggest that Goku struggles to free himself and surface, but Trunks is powerless to come to Goku's aid. Trunks is quickly knocked to the ground and covered with a battery of energy blasts, but when the dust clears he is nowhere to be seen.

Suddenly, Goku emerges from the water carrying a giant block of ice. He tosses it at No. 13 who dodges easily, only losing his hat in the process. He grabs Goku by the foot and pulls him back down into the icy water. No. 13 clearly has the upper hand under water, pinning Goku against a wall and launching a point-blank red energy blast at him. The blast at least pushes Goku back up and out of the water once again. During a pause in his battle with Nos. 14 and 15, Trunks reappears levitating blocks of ice with his ki. The Artificial Humans look impressed as he sends the ice crashing into them, before following up with his sword. No. 14 catches the blade easily on the tips of his fingers. Not even standing a chance, they bat around Trunks and send him careening back down to the ground.

No. 13 launches a more powerful version of his attack against Goku, the S.S. Deadly Bomber. This attack, a solid red energy core surrounded by red and electric energy, follows Goku's every move. No. 13 boasts that the blast has the power to destroy half the planet. The ball of energy crushes Goku against the ice until it is unexpectedly knocked away thanks to a ki blast from an unknown source. With an incredible display of power, the ice mountain splits in two to reveal Vegeta! He tells the Artificial Humans that only he will be the one to destroy "Kakarrot". No. 13 orders No. 15 to face Vegeta while he resumes his close-quarters battle against Son Goku. (In a moment of levity, No. 15 briefly falls into a deep patch of snow.) No. 13 seems to have the edge over base-form Goku. Not far away, Trunks is beaten into a wall and repeatedly head-butted by No. 14. Vegeta even seems to be having difficulty against No. 15. Even as everyone is seemingly on the ropes, Goku reveals that the Artificial Humans have underestimate their true power!

In the midsts of being pummeled into a wall of ice, Vegeta smiles and tells his assailant not to get carried away. With a scream, he transforms into a Super Saiyan! No. 15's hat and sunglasses are destroyed by the energy wave. Trunks and Goku follow suit and transform as well. Kuririn cheers that all three Super Saiyans are fighting together![b] The tables turn and all three Saiyans take the offensive, while Doctor Gero's computer furiously calculates what to do with the situation. Goku still seems well-matched against No. 13. A stray blast hits Kuririn in the face, prompting Gohan to put out the blast with some ice. Fearing for his father's safety, Gohan launches a surprise ki attack at No. 13's back, but it has little effect. Frustrated at the interruption, the Artificial Human fires a red energy blast at the boy. Goku seems powerless to protect his son, but the Artificial Human's blast is blocked at the last minute by an unexpected ki blast from below. It's Piccolo, here to rescue his protege! Piccolo grabs No. 13's legs and joins the fight. Doctor Gero's computer's improved battle tactics seem to be helping Nos. 14 and 15 in their battles against Vegeta and Trunks as the Super Saiyans no longer seem to have the upper hand. Vegeta appears to be beaten by No. 15 and falls back to his base form... but No. 15's head falls and the whole unit explodes into a shower of robot parts. One down! Trunks, plows headfirst into No. 14 and he too falls back to his base form with blood flowing down his face. As No. 14 turns to face him again, he splits into two having be sliced by Trunks's blade. He explodes in a second shower of robot parts. Two down!

Vegeta and Trunks rejoin Goku and Piccolo, surrounding the final Artificial Human. No. 13 laughs, unconcerned by the long odds as parts from his defeated comrades float towards him. One by one, chips and batteries are absorbed into No. 13's skin, triggering an unexpected transformation! No. 13's muscle mass increases, his skin turns blue, his eyes turn white, and his hair turns red. Completely transformed, he is now Super Artificial Human No. 13! Vegeta powers up and attacks, but his punches do not affect the blue-skinned giant. No. 13 grabs him, triggering Trunks to rush in to save his father but the boy is quickly blasted and knocked unconscious against the glacier. No. 13 smashes Vegeta into the ground and apparently knocked him out.[c] Piccolo takes his turn next, but the Artificial Human ignores his blows and smashes him into the ice with a red energy blast. Goku attacks last and seems to do no more damage than the others, but as the real target No. 13 does not just bat him away. Instead, he grabs Goku by the leg, punches him in the crotch, and then slams him into the ground. Goku gasps in pain before reverting to his base form, unconscious on the ground. No. 13 closes in to finish the job by stomping on the Saiyan's head, but Goku wakes and dodges at the last minute. No. 13 is still too fast for him and grabs Goku by the hair, tossing the Saiyan down a deep crevasse. The Artificial Human descends to follow as Gohan screams for his father. In the crack far below, No. 13 toys with Goku. Each time Goku rises, "Super" No. 13 smashes him down yet again. Again and again Goku comes up, only to be knocked down again. His dogi torn by the onslaught, all Goku can manage is a weak laugh. No. 13 fires another S.S. Deadly Bomber at him, launching him out of the crevasse and back into the icy water. Goku sinks to the bottom, unconscious.

Gohan and Kuririn rush to the shore to rescue him, but No. 13 stands in wait. In his desperation, Kuririn tries his own ki attacks, but they have no effect on the far more powerful Artificial Human. No. 13 fires an an energy attack at Kuririn, but Gohan deflects it with a ki blast of his own. No. 13 turns his attention to Gohan.

Under the water, a weakened and exhausted Goku begins to form a Genki-Dama and calls for the genki of all living things. In the forest, a group of animals look up. Far away, Oolong, the Turtle Hermit, and Chi-Chi also seem to sense Goku's request. No. 13 advances on a retreating Gohan just as Goku emerges from the water with hands outstretched, a giant ball of glowing ki forming far above him. Turning back around, No. 13 fires an energy blast at Goku to stop him, but Gohan rushes to place his own body in the path of the blast. He is blasted away, but Goku remains unscathed and continues to gather genki. Vegeta attacks next, keeping No. 13 from focusing on Goku. The Saiyan Prince is wounded and barely able to stand, but he charges in anyway, announcing once again that "Kakarrot" can only be killed by his hand. No. 13 grabs him like a rag doll, appears to break both his shoulders and then tries to break his back over the Artificial Human's knee. Goku continues to gather genki. Trunks comes to his feet to rescue his father, launching a ki blast that distracts the blue giant from breaking his father's back. Trunks tells the Artificial Human that he does not exist in twenty years so Goku must defeat him here today. He rushes in with his sword, breaking it against No. 13's impenetrable body. Trunks is knocked back once again. Each assault on No. 13 buys Goku a few more moments to gather genki. Gero's computer seems to realize the danger that No. 13 is in, signaling him about the danger. No. 13 prepares another S.S. Deadly Bomber, but now Piccolo rushes in and grabs him, causing the attack to fire harmlessly into the atmosphere. The genki ball descends and touches Goku's hands.

Unexpectedly, Goku powers up to Super Saiyan. Kuririn realizes that something is wrong: A Super Saiyan naturally has a malicious heart and it is impossible control the Genki-Dama in that state! Goku screams as something changes with the energy ball. Ice and water begin to be sucked into it, almost as if the very fabric of space itself is warping. The energy seems to enter Goku somehow. Goku's energy breaks apart the ice floes, leaving only a single narrow column suspended in the water with No. 13 on top of it. The genki ball glows bright yellow and expands, consuming No. 13's little island. Goku floats over to him, still surrounded by the yellow genki energy. No. 13 tries to attack twice, but somehow misses both times. Goku, his face contorted in rage or pain, punches the Artificial Human through his chest. With a final yell of "Son Goku!", No. 13 disintegrates inside of the genki ball before exploding outwards. In Gero's lab, his computer turns itself off, its mission a failure.

Later that day, Gohan awakens on an iceberg next to Trunks and Kuririn. He smiles and sees his father sitting above him. Goku smiles, waves, and says "Yo!"

Some time later, Kuririn and Gohan recuperate in a hospital. Both of them wear casts and bandages, but Trunks and Goku seem to be okay. Vegeta and Piccolo are nowhere to be seen. Kuririn theorizes that the Genki-Dama began to dissipate when Goku turned Super Saiyan, but somehow Goku unconsciously brought that energy into himself. Goku shrugs and claims not to know what happened. Chi-Chi tells Gohan that he needs to heal quickly so that he can go to summer school; Gohan pulls the covers over his head, and asks where Piccolo and Vegeta are.

Out in the ocean, Piccolo and Vegeta sit in silence on opposite sides of an ice floe. A lone fish breaches the surface of the water...

Tidbits

No. 17 kills Doctor Gero in this film.
No. 17 kills Doctor Gero in the the original episode.
  • The events of this film, like most of the films, contradict aspects of established continuity. Daizenshuu 6 places the events of this film in a "parallel world".[3]
    • The opening sequence with No. 17 killing Doctor Gero plays out nearly identically to Dragon Ball Z Episode 134. In the episode, the doctor's death was witnessed by Kuririn, Future Trunks, and the other heroes, however they are not shown here. It is unclear whether this is intended to represent a different edit of the same event or an alternate timeline where Doctor Gero was killed by No. 17 under different circumstances. Gero is already missing his right arm; it had been severed in battle with Vegeta in the original story.
    • As revealed in Dragon Ball Z Episode 145, Cell's lab was directly underneath the area with Nos. 16, 17, and 18. In this film, that lab appears to be working on a more powerful Artificial Human No. 13 instead. No mention of Cell or his development is made in this film.
    • This film's continuity suggests that while Nos. 17 and 18 were somehow defeated, Cell did not emerge to challenge the heroes. Gohan did not yet become a Super Saiyan.
  • Counting her appearances in the movies, and placing this film with its release between Dragon Ball Z episodes 147 and 148, this is Chi-Chi's 100 appearance in the series. She is the twelfth character to reach that milestone (after Son Goku, Bulma, Turtle Hermit, Oolong, Yamcha, Pu'er, Kuririn, Tenshinhan, Piccolo, Son Gohan, and Vegeta.)
  • Unlike the Artificial Humans seen in the anime itself, Nos. 13, 14, and 15 appear to have frequent communication with Doctor Gero's computer which relays battle powers and other information about their foes.
  • While shopping for clothes, Chi-Chi tells Goku that she will buy him clothes and make him "dress up once in a while". While perhaps coincidental, Goku appears wearing a suit in the following film.

Notes

  1. No explanation is given in the film about how the Artificial Humans recognize Trunks. Possibly, the computer observed the previous battles with Nos. 17 and 18 and included the data for later use.
  2. This claim by Kuririn that "all three" Super Saiyans are battling suggest that Son Gohan had not yet achieved that form prior to this film.
  3. Vegeta remains a Super Saiyan in this shot, while crumpled up next to Kuririn, but is shown waking up in his base form a few moments later. This may have been an animation error.
