Production

Akira Toriyama began writing the script for Super Hero while Dragon Ball Super: Broly was still in production.[1] Shueisha's Dragon Ball Room director Akio Iyoku and producer Norihiro Hayashida first alluded to this in the booklet accompanying the home video release of Broly:[2]

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the driving force for the next movie.
Iyoku: Preparations are now steadily underway for the next Dragon Ball movie. Broli was too powerful, so I think it will probably go in an entirely different direction next time. There were parts in the film where we ended up raising the bar, so we have to be careful to avoid burnout. I think Dragon Ball will continue on in the future, so I hope everyone looks forward to it.
Hayashida: A lot of things became apparent by raising the bar. The staffing and casting were on point to a level they've never been before, and though I feel that we did a great job, I'll use this experience to aim even higher in the future!
Iyoku: There were some things that we weren't able to execute this time, so I think the next one will turn out to be even more amazing. Please look forward to it.

Promotion

Akira Toriyama's first comment on the film.

The new film to be released in 2022 was officially announced on Goku Day in Japan, or 09 May 2021. However, the announcement leaked on the 7th by way of a headline that should have been hidden on Toei Animation's Europe website, and on the 8th, the official English translation of Akira Toriyama's first comment on the film was discovered in the elements of the main Toei website.[2]

An all new movie since "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" is currently in the making!

Just like the previous movie, I'm heavily leading the story and dialogue production for another amazing film.

I really shouldn't talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character.

We'll be charting through some unexplored territory in terms of visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride, so I hope everybody will look forward to the new movie!

After the official announcement on Goku Day,[3] the press release was picked up by Anime News Network.[4]

TOKYO – May 9, 2021 Fans worldwide received a special surprise this Goku Day, the annual Dragon Ball celebration, when Toei Animation revealed today that a new "Dragon Ball Super" movie will be released in 2022. The Dragon Ball phenomena began in 1984 when Japan's well-known manga from Akira Toriyama premiered in Shueisha's "Weekly Shonen Jump" – becoming a top ranked title throughout its 10 and a half years of publication. Since then, the manga's popularity has continued to grow with an astonishing record of 260 million copies sold worldwide and counting. And with Dragon Ball's ever-increasing popularity, it has expanded beyond manga to include TV animation, movies, games and merchandising. Now 37 years after the launch of the original manga, Dragon Ball continues to evolve and will reach new heights starting with this new large-scale movie. #DBSuperMovie

The new release will be the second film based on "Dragon Ball Super," the manga title and the anime series which launched in 2015. The first such movie was the 2018 release "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" which was a smash hit with audiences – setting a worldwide box office record of over $120 million.

Planning for the new film project was kicked-off in 2018, before the release of "Dragon Ball Super: Broly," with the goal of telling a large-scale story that would build on the enthusiastic response for the previous theatrical series and the current global fervor for "Broly." Akira Toriyama himself has picked up his pen to deliver a fascinating story that fans desire. From the magnificent story composition to character design to the lines of the script, Toriyama has worked passionately with the greatest attention to detail and highest quality standards – creating a Dragon Ball movie unlike any other in its history and one that will surely be a blockbuster with fans.

As part of today's announcement, Akira Toriyama, creator of the original story, screenplay, and character design, wrote a special message to Dragon Ball fans. A signed copy of this message is available here.

Toriyama's comment was reprinted in the August 2021 issue of V-Jump, released on 21 June 2021.[5]

On 21 June 2021, Toriyama's first comment was reprinted in the August 2021 issue of V-Jump in a special advertisement featuring a timeline of Dragon Ball films, ending with a short blurb about the new, as-yet-untitled film to be released in 2022.[5]

A new [chapter of] history will be written in the DB movies!! What story awaits in the movie debuting in 2022?

On 09 July 2021, it was announced on the Dragon Ball Official Site that Akio Iyoku, Norihiro Hayashida, and Masako Nozawa would discuss the upcoming film in a San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) panel on 23 July 2021, wth a special performance from Hironobu Kageyama. From the site's official English translation:[6]

They'll be talking non-stop about the latest "Dragon Ball Super" movie, which is set for release in 2022, and sharing all the hottest info as well as giving some insight about what the production has been like behind the scenes! There'll also be a special live performance from the one-and-only Hironobu Kageyama!

The video was prerecorded and posted in full on YouTube at 10:00 A.M. PT; the video begins with Kageyama's performance of "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" and then moves on to the chat with Iyoku, Hayashida, and Nozawa. In this panel, the film's subtitle "Super Hero" was revealed for the first time, along with some character and setting designs.

Iyoku and Hayashida explained that Piccolo's design was changed to match Toriyama's original colors, and Kuririn's eyes were colored white for the same reason. Pan's design in her kindergarten uniform revealed that she had grown a little since her last appearance in the Dragon Ball Super anime.[7]

The SDCC panel also featured the debut of the first teaser trailer, a short 3D-animated clip of Goku that uses techniques evocative of 2D animation. The frame pacing was altered for the full-length teaser shown at the panel and later uploaded separately to the Toei Movie Channel on YouTube.[8] This issue caused the animation to appear choppy.[9]

The original, unaltered teaser animation was also uploaded directly to the official website as a pop-up preview.[10] This version, embedded below, lacks the choppiness of the other official uploads.

This website video is not the full promotional teaser, and the music cuts off where the animation ends, but the entirety of the animated portion is intact.
