Dragon Ball Z Side-Story: Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans: Part One, later called Earth Story[note 2], is the first of two episodes of the Dragon Ball Z OVA, Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans. This episode was released on 23 July 1993, between episodes 194 and 195 of the series. It was written by Takao Koyama and directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi.
This episode was a part of a multimedia collection which included a NES game, the two-episode OVA based on the NES game (and intended, in part, as a "strategy guide"), and a Playdia game. For more information, see Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans. It was subsequently re-edited and re-animated into the feature Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans.

Prologue
At an unknown location, a shadowy figure (Doctor Raichi) speaks to energy emanating from glowing red orbs. He announces that it is time for revenge against the Saiyans. As he works, several orbs begin to glow and levitate. He sends them to kill the final remaining Saiyans, those on Earth, to punish them for the sins of their race. He laughs as demonic monsters, presumably hatched from the red orbs, fly out of the castle.
Episode
In a forest near Mount Paozu, Son Gohan gathers firewood and brings it home to where Son Goku is training. Inside, Chi-Chi calls them both in for a meal. Gohan slips and sends the gathered branches flying. He explains to his father that the forest is dying! Suddenly, Mister Popo appears on his flying carpet to tell Goku the news: Dende has discovered that Destron Gas is appearing and accumulating on Earth. If it is not stopped, it can destroy all living things. Gohan speculates that this may be the cause of the trees dying. Popo agrees, telling the pair that they have only seventy days before even they succumb to the gas. Gohan suggests that they ask Bulma about the situation, leaving poor Chi-Chi still calling them in for dinner.
At Capsule Corp Headquarters, Bulma searches for "Destron Gas" on her computer, but comes up with no results. Even Dr. Brief seems to be at a loss. Bulma continues researching while Goku and Gohan prepare to leave to find the origin of the gas. Popo announces that Dende has found the four sources: Grand Apron, a canyon-filled area southwest of East City; a pyramid in the Western Desert near North City; on Bunbuku Island in the Southern Sea near Poco Poco Volcano; and in the Land of Ice in a polar region[note 3]. Goku suggests that he and Gohan split up to cover more of the sites. Piccolo suddenly appears, revealing that since he has merged with the previous God, he was able to sense the problem. Goku just seems glad to not have to explain everything over again. Before they can leave, a group of monsters appear and attack the group. Goku impatiently wants to end the battle quickly, but although he is able to transform into a Super Saiyan, he is unable to fire a kamehameha at the attackers! He tries again, but it is still no good. Piccolo tries a makankosappo and Gohan tries a masenko, but both fail as well. Popo realizes that the Destron Gas is preventing them from focusing ki attacks. Goku and the others switch to melee attacks and defeat the enemies easily. The three warriors split up to investigate the sources of the gas.
At Grand Apron, Goku discovers Destron Gas leaking for a strange rock formation. Goku moves in closer to investigate and is rewarded with a blast of the gas right in his face! He punches through the rock to reveal a strange machine spewing the gas. Before he can destroy the machine, he is attacked by another one of Doctor Raichi's monsters who pins him down with a ki barrage. Goku tries to strike back with a kamehameha before remembering that he has lost the ability to perform ki attacks. Goku turns the tables using melee attacks and defeats the monster. With no time to lose, he destroys the Destron Gas machine and flies off to the Land of Ice.
Meanwhile, in the Western Desert, Gohan faces off against his own monstrous opponent at the site of another Destron Gas machine. He has little difficulty with the attacker but unexpectedly feels his ki returning. As if to test that the Destron Gas is receding, Gohan launches a kamehameha at his opponent and destroys him utterly. Gohan knocks out the machine and prepares to head to his next destination.
As he approaches Poco Poco Volcano, Piccolo tosses out a Capsule #21 containing snow to cool the area. This allows him to descend and discover a talkative monster: the villain has mined the whole area and there is no way for Piccolo to approach the Destron Gas generator without being killed! Piccolo just laughs and flies over the mines. The monster tries to leap at him, but lands on one of his own mines by mistake, destroying himself, much of the island, and the gas generator. Piccolo is flabbergasted that he would discover an enemy more stupid than Mister Satan.
A short time later, the trio of Goku, Gohan, and Piccolo arrive at the Land of Ice, but are stopped in their tracks by a giant wall of ice. Goku moves to blast through the wall, but a group of monsters emerge from the snow-covered ground to attack. As more and more monsters emerge, the trio are forced to fight them several at a time. Piccolo tries to give Goku an opening to assault the wall, but the constant onrush of new foes makes escaping the melee impossible. They fight until dozens of dead monsters litter the battlefield, but the constant assault takes its toll and all three warriors are on the verge of exhaustion. Fortunately, the calvary arrives: Vegeta and Future Trunks, fresh from a battle in West City where they defended Bulma and the baby Trunks. With two more allies in the battle, and with Trunks wielding a makeshift sword made of ice, they make short work of the pressing horde of monsters. Focusing all of their ki attacks together, they level much of the island including the monsters, the impenetrable wall, and the Destron Gas generator. Goku is pleased that the battle is over, but Dende telepathically contacts him from God's Temple: the gas continues to grow stronger around the world because of a fifth generator located at Tongari Tower in West City. The five fly back to West City immediately.
Goku spies the final Destron Gas generator on the tip of a giant satellite disk on the tower. Vegeta launches a ki attack to destroy it, but this generator has a protective shield and they are unable to harm it. Suddenly, they hear a familiar voice: it's Freeza! He taunts them that they will be unable to penetrate the shield. Trunks recalls that he sliced Freeza in half. Freeza says that "we" will eradicate all the Saiyans. Goku asks him who he means by "we" and he points upward, revealing Coola, Tullece, and Slug. Slug offers to let Piccolo go free as he is only concerned with the Saiyans, but Piccolo refuses. Tullece reveals that he wants to destroy all of the Saiyans because he was killed by a Saiyan. Vegeta retorts that they do not know how powerful they have all become since they last fought, but Coola and Freeza reveal that they have become stronger thanks to the rage of those defeated by the Saiyans. Coola also reveals that even once the Saiyans are dead, they will still destroy the world using the Destron Gas. Goku fights Coola and is shocked by his strength, while Trunks pairs up with Freeza, Piccolo with Slug, and Gohan with Tullece. (Vegeta watches from the sidelines.) Goku slams Coola into the tower and appears to defeat him, but his opponent transforms into a pink blob and reforms even stronger than before. The others win their battles, but each ends in the same way as they transform into goo and then reform. Piccolo realizes that while they look like their old opponents, they are "monsters" like the demon creatures that they fought earlier. Suddenly, Goku hears the telepathic words of Kaiō: these are merely "ghost warriors". Somehow, this knowledge strikes fear into the four opponents and the next time they are defeated they do not regenerate. Only Piccolo has difficulty putting down Slug, but Gohan assists by whistling and Piccolo destroys him using a ki blast. Kaiō reveals that they will be unable to destroy this generator without destroying the one behind all of the attacks: Doctor Raichi.
Kaiō explains that Doctor Raichi was the most intelligent of the Tsufruians. Only Vegeta knows of them; he explains that they were once conquered by the Saiyans. Kaiō continues, explaining that Planet Vegeta had once been called Planet Plant and hosted a peaceful and scientifically advanced civilization. A small group of Saiyans arrived in a wrecked spaceship and asked for help; the Tsufruians allowed them to settle on their planet and there was peace for a time. Gradually, the Saiyan population increased and eventually one was born with an intellect that rivaled his Tsufruian neighbors: King Vegeta. He led a rebellion against the Tsufruians, and thanks in part to their oozaru forms, they were able to take over. The planet was renamed Planet Vegeta in honor of their warrior king. Vegeta is nonrepentant, saying that it was destiny that brought the Saiyans to that planet, while Gohan is sympathetic to their rage and angry that they would attack the people of Earth as well. Kaiō tells Goku that Raichi can be found on the "Dark Planet", Ankoku, at the end of the universe. Goku's response is simple, "Let's go!"
On Ankoku, Doctor Raichi already knows that Goku and his friends are on their way. No matter how many times a ghost warrior is defeated, they always come back.

Setting
This set of episodes does not appear to fit into the established continuity of the series due to appearances by Tullece, Coola, and Slug. Each of their previous appearances were in movies whose timelines are uncertain or contradictory. As such, the below dates are approximate only.
- Age 767 - An indeterminate period prior to the Cell Games, but after the encounter with Broly.
Flashbacks:
- Approximately Age 550 - The Saiyans arrive on Planet Plant in a damaged spaceship and are welcomed by their new neighbors, the Tsufruians.
- Approximately Age 720-Age 730 - The Saiyans and the Tsufruians battle for control of Planet Plant.
- Approximately Age 762 - Goku defeats Tullece and Slug.[note 5]
- August Age 764 - Trunks defeats Freeza.
- Unknown date between Age 764-767 - Goku battles Coola on Earth

Tidbits
- This episode elaborates on the battle between the Saiyans and the Tsufruians that was first described by Kaiō in Dragon Ball Z Episode 20. While there are discrepancies between this retelling and the previous one, some of these may be explained as Kaiō was lying to Goku in part during that retelling. (Kaiō blamed the destruction of Planet Vegeta on the God of Planet Vegeta rather than Freeza, for example.) Aspects of this backstory will be further elaborated on (in occasionally contradictory ways) in Dragon Ball GT and Episode of Bardock.
- This episode features flashbacks to Dragon Ball Z Episode 120, and Dragon Ball Z movies 3, 4, and 5. In all cases, shots were selected that resembled those of their original appearances but they are all reanimated.
- If this "episode" is placed chronologically after Dragon Ball Z Episode 194, it marks Son Gohan's 200th non-flashback appearance in the anime and movies. Only Son Goku, Bulma, and Kuririn have more episode appearances, despite Gohan not being present during the original Dragon Ball anime.
