Doctor Raichi is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball universe by Akira Toriyama. He was created as the initial antagonist for Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans, a multi-platform OVA and video game series released in Japan in 1993. Raichi is a Tsufruian, an extinct race that once lived peacefully with the Saiyans before being killed in a genocide a generation prior to the events of the series. In the OVA, Raichi attacks the Earth to stamp out the last remaining Saiyans, including Son Goku, Vegeta, and their families.

Biography

Doctor Raichi was probably born on Planet Plant, the world that would eventually become Planet Vegeta. By around Age 720, he had become a prominent scientist. When war broke out between the Saiyans and Tsufruians, Raichi hid in his lab to work on a creation that would be able to defeat the Saiyans: Hacchi Hyack. This new weapon could absorb the energy from dying Tsufruians' hatred of the Saiyans and create "ghost warriors" out of that energy. Unfortunately, it would take time to charge the machine so Raichi loaded it onto a spaceship to flee the planet before it was too late. Before he could take off, the war was over: the Saiyans used their Great Ape forms to overrun the Tsufruians, including Doctor Raichi, and killed him in his lab. His hatred of the Saiyans mixed with many others' as the rocket took off into deep space.[1]

As time went by, Hacchi Hyack evolved into a real creature as it continued to feed on the energies of peoples defeated by Saiyans, including Freeza himself. Doctor Raichi was reborn as a ghost warrior and plotted to destroy the Earth and the universe's final remaining Saiyans. In Age 767, he made his move and attacked the Earth using Destron Gas. Son Goku and his friends were able to destroy some of the Destron Gas generators, but had to travel to Raichi's planet to put a stop to the plot. Goku and the others defeated Raichi and his new hatred energy was absorbed into Hacchi Hyack, allowing it to reach its final form.[2][note 1]

Name

Doctor Raichi's name, ライチー, is spelled nearly the same was at the "lychee" fruit, except with a long vowel at the end.

Notable Skills

As a Tsufruian scientist, Raichi appears to have no special skills. Once reborn as a "ghost warrior", Doctor Raichi gains many ki-related abilities such as flying, an energy barrier, and energy attacks. He also is able to utilize the captured "grief energy" of people defeated by Saiyans-- including Freeza, Coola, Slug, and Tullece-- and send them to attack the Earth.

Performance

In the original OVA, Doctor Raichi is portrayed by Shinji Ogawa, a voice actor best known for his work on Fist of the North Star. He previously played Chin Taiken in Dragon Ball Episode 80. When the OVA was remade into Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans, Raichi was performed by Hiroshi Iwasaki in his only role so far in the Dragon Ball franchise.

Notable Appearances

Notes

  1. Doctor Raichi's history differs slightly between the original Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans and the remake, but not to a significant extent. For example, in the original Raichi attacked the Earth while safely hidden on a planet at the edge of the universe. In the remake, he parks that planet in orbit above the Earth.
