Chin Taiken is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball universe by Akira Toriyama. Son Goku encountered him in King Wonton's kingdom while training for the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai‎. Chin Taiken is a martial arts master and teacher at the Chin School, specializing in the gensei-ken technique. His only appearance is in an episode written by Toshiki Inoue.

Biography

Little is revealed in the series about Chin Taiken prior to Son Goku's arrival. He was a martial arts master and a teacher at his family's dojo in King Wonton's kingdom. During his life, he had a son, Chin Shōken, and mastered his school's gensei-ken technique. He also established a rivalry with the "demonic" Hyūga School, especially their master Tenlong. By approximately Age 750, Chin Taiken had developed an illness which prevented him from fighting effectively.

In approximately Age 750[note 1], King Wonton held a small tournament, the Imperial Match, to determine which martial arts school would be preeminent in his kingdom. Chin Taiken intended to compete, but his illness prevented him from competing effectively and he planned to forfeit. His son was not yet ready to compete himself. Son Goku, traveling through, offered to represent the Chin school at the tournament. Despite suffering from the effects of a laxative (administered by Shōken as an attempt to force Goku to withdraw and allow him to fight), Son Goku won the match using the Chin school's gensei-ken technique, ensuring the honor would go to Taiken's school and not Goku's other training. As a result of this victory, Tenlong and his brother Shaolong both joined the Chin school.[1]

Name

Chin Taiken's personal name, Taiken, means "big fist" in Chinese. This is made to contrast against his son, Shōken, which meant "little fist". Taiken's surname was only implied in the episode itself but was confirmed in Daizenshuu 3.[2]

Production

Due to the production schedule inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of Dragon Ball interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. Chin Taiken and his related adventure flesh out Son Goku's training prior to the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai‎.

Notable Skills

Chin Taiken was a formidable martial artist although his illness has made him less effective than he once was. He has mastered his school's gensei-ken technique, a six-armed flying punch which is described as being similar to the zanzouken.

Performance

Chin Taiken is played by Shinji Ogawa, a Japanese voice actor whose only other role in the series was as Doctor Raichi in The Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans.

Notable Appearances

Notes

  1. Son Goku could have met with Chin Taiken any time between Age 750 and 753, however the exact year is not established in the anime.
