King Wonton is a minor fictional character in the Dragon Ball universe by Akira Toriyama. Although his kingdom is not named in the series, Son Goku visited it briefly while training for the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. During that time, he participated in King Wonton's Imperial Match, a one-match martial arts event. His only appearance is in an episode written by Toshiki Inoue.
Biography
Almost nothing is known about King Wonton except that, at some point, he married Queen Harumaki.[a] He also sponsored a martial arts tournament, the Imperial Match, featuring the schools within his kingdom. Son Goku agrees to fight in this match while representing the Chin School whose sensei is sick. King Wonton is charmed by Goku's blunt mode of speaking and makes some scatalogical jokes of his own.[1]
Name
King Wonton's name derives from the Chinese wonton, a popular type of stuffed dumpling. His name is closely connected to that of his wife as Harukami is also a type of Japanese spring roll.
Production
Due to the production schedule inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of Dragon Ball interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. King Wonton and his Imperial Match help to flesh out Son Goku's training prior to the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai.
Performance
Despite having some lines, King Wonton is left uncredited in the anime. It is not presently known who performed his role in Japanese. He is also uncredited in the Funimation English dub.
Notable Appearances
- Dragon Ball Episode 80 - King Wonton introduction and only appearance to date.
Notes
- ↑ Subsequent episodes of Dragon Ball, starting with Dragon Ball Episode 113, will establish that the world is ruled by a single King of the World who lives in King Castle. Presumably King Wonton is actually a sub-king or similar, but this is not clarified in the series itself.
