Zalama the Dragon God is a fictional character mentioned, but never seen, in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Zalama is first mentioned in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 7, published in V-Jump on 19 December 2015 in Japan.

Biography

The Dragon God Zalama created the Super Dragon Balls in the 41st year of the Divine Calendar. In year 42, he patented the balls' characteristic starfish design.[1][2][3] Nothing else about Zalama is known.

Name

Zalama's name (ザラマ zarama) is likely derived from "salamander" (サラマンダー saramandā), a group of amphibians typically characterized by a lizard-like appearance. The salamander is mythologically associated with fire, especially in Japan, and thus is often associated with dragons as well.

Zalama's title, "Dragon God", is written as 龍神 with furigana indicating a Japanese reading of ryūjin. This, incidentally, is opposed to being written as 神龍 (which is used as Shenlong's name in the series, and itself presented with furigana indicating the Chinese pronunciation rather than the standard Japanese pronunciation of shinryū).
