"Warriors of Universe 6" is the seventh chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga series written and illustrated by Toyotarō, with supervision and guidance from original Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama. It was first published in Japan in the February 2016 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump, with a sale date of 19 December 2015.

Summary

The narrator recaps that Beerus' Universe 7 team has been decided: Son Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Majin Boo, and "the strongest warrior Beerus ever met". Meanwhile, in order to find the final Super Dragon Ball, Bulma heads off with Jaco to meet the supposedly all-knowing "Zuno"…

Jaco proclaims that even as an elite patrolman, he has never heard of any such things like a match against Universe 6 or the Super Dragon Balls before. Jaco asks to tag along to the fight. Bulma says it should be okay, since they are all invited, and suggests Jaco bring along his girlfriend… though it turns out she dumped him.

Having arrived to see Lord Zuno, the two find that Zuno must be presented with a gift in order to receive an audience and have their questions answered. Jaco pecks him on the cheek with a kiss, and is granted one question. To show Bulma just how smart he is, Jaco asks Zuno what Bulma's bust size is. Zuno (correctly, judging by Bulma's reaction) answers 83.4 centimeters, though he notes it used to be 87.2 centimeters before they began sagging. Bulma kisses Zuno as well, and though she is a woman and able to request more, her middle-aged status knocks her down to only three total questions. Bulma wastes a question confirming her number of questions, and so quickly recovers by asking to know everything about the Super Dragon Balls. Zuno explains:

The Super Dragon Balls, also known as "Wish Orbs", are perfect spheres with a diameter of 371,962.2204 kilometers created by the Dragon God Zalama in the 41st year of the Divine Calendar. Universe 6 and Universe 7 together have a total of seven of these light-yellow balls, each of which contains one to seven red starfish marks. These red starfish marks are Zalama's own original design, which he obtained a patent for during the 42nd year of the Divine Calendar. This design utilizes refraction to ensure that the marks remain starfish-shaped no matter from which angle they are viewed. If you assemble all seven spheres scattered throughout the two universes and intone in the language of the gods the incantation "Come forth, God of Dragons, and grant my wish, peas!" then the God of Dragons will appear and grant any wish, but only one. Once that wish is granted, they will once again scatter throughout the two universes and silently await the time when they shall be gathered up again by someone with an unobtainable dream.
Zuno

Bulma unfortunately wastes her third question confirming that there are seven balls between the two universes. She will be able to ask more questions in a year's time. Feeling somewhat defeated, Bulma and Jaco head back to Earth.

Inside the new Room of Spirit and Time, Goku and Vegeta discuss the potential strength of Champa's Universe 6 team. Goku is excited to meet all five of them, along with the mysterious extra person for their own team that Beerus has selected. As the two argue, they resume their training inside the Room of Spirit and Time for a total of three days (equaling three years' worth of time inside the room).

Three days later, friends and family from Earth head to the arena in a special spaceship provided by Whis. Beerus learns that the seven Super Dragon Balls are spread between their two universes, meaning Champa has been sneaking around in Universe 7. Pilaf, Shuu, and Mai wonder what these Super Dragon Balls might be. Goku asks Videl where Gohan is; there was an important academic conference, so he was unable to join them. The group then finally meet the fifth member of their team: Monaka. Vegeta figures he does not look like anything special, which Piccolo takes to mean that they should not underestimate him. Whis explains that Monaka is from Planet Wagashi, and his name means "Grand Ponta". Though he is quiet and gentle, when it comes right down to it, he is powerful enough to give even Beerus a run for his money. It turns out that "Ponta" means "nipples" and he is called that due to the enormous nipples protruding from his chest. The rest of Earth’s heroes get settled in with Kuririn leading a game of shiritori, while the Galactic King asks Jaco why no-one seems to notice or acknowledge him.

It takes the group 35 minutes to travel from Earth to Beerus' planet, and then another 2 hours and 10 minutes to reach the "Nameless Planet", site of the tournament grounds.

Beerus introduces the location while the group gasps at the size of the Super Dragon Balls. Beerus confronts Champa on sneaking around and stealing Super Dragon Balls from his universe, but Champa retorts that since Beerus did not even know about them in the first place, he figured it would not be a problem. Goku greets his Eastern Kaiōshin, noticing that he's now split back into Shin and Kibito (courtesy of the Namekians). Goku then greets two Kaiōshin from Universe 6 before he is called by Whis to take part in the written test ahead of the match. As the Universe 6 Kaiōshin asks the Universe 7 Kaiōshin what the story is with Goku, the two Saiyan figures catch their first glimpse at Champa's five-member Universe 6 team, including one guy who looks suspiciously like Freeza…!

Interstitial Page

Goku tries to test Monaka's reflexes and strength just as he does in Episode 32 - to spectacular failure.

In this chapter, Goku meets Monaka on the way to the Nameless Planet. In the corresponding anime episode, however, he meets him on Beerus’s planet, where tries to test his reflexes and strength – to spectacular failure. The manga includes this scene in the interstitial page.

Continuity

  • The recruitment of Boo and Piccolo is shown in much greater detail in the anime:
    • Boo initially does not want to participate in the tournament due to his dislike of Beerus, but he agrees to participate after Goku tells him that he can have one of the Super Dragon Balls’ wishes if it turns out that they can grant more than one. Mr. Satan is worried about what Boo might wish for, but Boo simply replies that he is not going to wish for anything, since Mr. Satan already gives him everything he could possibly want – instead, he will just give the wish to Mr. Satan in case he wins.
    • In the anime, Gohan actually asks to participate in the tournament instead of Piccolo, but then has to refuse himself when he finds out that the day of the matches overlaps with an academic conference that he just cannot miss. In the manga, however, Goku only finds out that Gohan isn’t even going to see the matches during the trip to the Nameless Planet, and has to ask Videl why he didn’t come (prompting Goku to voice his disappointment at his son).
  • In the anime, before Jaco arrives on Earth, Goku tries to look for Kibitoshin’s ki, presumably to teleport to the Kaiōshin planet so that the god can take either him or Bulma (or both) to the center of the universe in order to search for the last Super Dragon Ball. However, no matter how much he searches for his ki, he cannot find it. Only when he arrives at the tournament does he realize that it was because Kibitoshin had gathered the Namekian Dragon Balls and asked to revert back into Shin and Kibito.
  • In the manga, the narrator states that Goku and Vegeta are training in “the new Room of Spirit and Time”, without any explanation as to why it is back after the events of Chapter 494. In the anime, however, Goku explicitly states that he heard that Dende was “fixing it”.
  • In the anime, we can actually see the full, unusual form of Zuno’s planet, which is snuggled inside what seems to be a gigantic sake masu box, fitting with the overall classic Japanese theme.
  • In the anime, Jaco is initially unable to have an audience with Zuno, not having scheduled an appointment beforehand. However, luck strikes when the person scheduled to have an appointment at that very moment happens to be the wanted fugitive Geppuman. When he realizes he’s been found out, Geppuman takes one of Zuno’s attendants hostage, but Jaco manages to easily defeat him. As repayment, the attendants allow Jaco and Bulma to take Geppuman’s place. In the manga version, however, Jaco and Bulma are able to have an audience right away, even without an appointment.
Goku and Vegeta sporting full beards and battered clothes. They also had strong body odor.
  • The corresponding anime episode shows that Goku and Vegeta didn’t shave or bathe (at least frequently) when inside the Room of Spirit and Time. They come back with battered clothes, strong body odor and full beards, prompting Bulma to demand that they take a shower. When they come back, they’re sporting new (although identical) clothing and their face is shaven.
Kuririn's new outfit in the God of Destruction Champa arc.
  • In the manga, Kuririn’s hair is still shaved after the events of the Resurrection 'F' arc (which, funnily enough, the manga skipped). In the anime, however, it has grown back.
    • In the manga, he is also wearing his outfit from the Battle of Gods arc. In the anime, he is wearing a brand new one.
Videl's new outfit in the God of Destruction Champa arc.
  • In this chapter, Videl is also sporting her outfit from the Battle of Gods arc. In the anime, however, she is wearing a pink jersey and gray yoga pants, which she will wear for the rest of the series.
  • In the manga, the Pilaf crew appears alongside all of Goku’s friends as spectators to the tournament, despite not being present in any of the previous Dragon Ball Super chapters (and therefore not having been reintroduced to the story after their last appearance in Dragon Ball Chapter 148).
  • In the anime, Chi-Chi brings a brazier and makes a barbecue inside Whis's Cube on the way to the Nameless Planet. Goku later says in Episode 33 that eating too much at this barbecue is the reason his movements were a bit slow during his match with Botamo.
  • In the manga, Champa shamelessly admits he’s been making incursions into Universe 7 to look for the Super Dragon Balls, saying that Beerus certainly wouldn’t mind since he didn’t even know they existed. In the anime, however, he seems surprised that Beerus figured it out and tries to play the fool. Beerus forgives him in both versions since he was sure the Super Dragon Balls would all soon become his.
  • In the anime, Trunks complains that the spectator seats look “too hard”, prompting Whis to replace them with one large padded seat for all of them to sit down on (and also replaces the contestant seats while he’s at it). In the manga, however, Trunks never complains, so the seats stay the same until the end of the tournament.
  • In the anime, we can see Monaka flying with the help of what appears to be a special pair of boots. This is absent from the manga chapter.

Notes

  • In the anime, Jaco states that the Galactic Patrol’s jurisdiction is “the Milky Way area”. This is notable because so far, the galaxies of Universe 7 have only ever been called by names related to the four cardinal directions: North, South, East and West. This might be an alternative way of referring to the North Galaxy (where the Earth of the Dragon Ball universe is located) or simply the Galactic Patrol’s internal name for the North Galaxy.
  • Dragon God Zalama's title is written as 龍神 with furigana indicating a Japanese reading of ryūjin. This, incidentally, is opposed to being written as 神龍 (which is used as Shenlong's name in the series, and itself presented with furigana indicating the Chinese pronunciation rather than the standard Japanese pronunciation of shinryū). Zalama's name itself (ザラマ zarama) is likely derived from "salamander" (サラマンダー saramandā), a group of amphibians typically characterized by a lizard-like appearance. The salamander is mythologically associated with fire, especially in Japan, and thus is often associated with dragons as well.
  • The joke included in the phrase used to summon Super Shenlong is that it ends in 丁髷 (chonmage), which means the "topknot" in old-fashioned Japanese hairdos. The word is used as a pun on 頂戴 (chōdai) meaning "please". As Bulma notes, it is a corny dad joke.
  • Both the manga and the anime state that Goku and Vegeta spent 3 years training in the Room of Spirit and Time, despite Goku clearly stating in Chapter 366 that the maximum time any one person could spend there over one’s lifetime was two years. Any more, and the door would close, leaving that person unable to leave. It is possible, however, that Dende removed that limitation when he rebuilt the room.
  • Monaka's name (モナカ monaka) is likely taken directly from 最中 (monaka), a Japanese sweet made of azuki bean jam sandwiched between two thin crisp wafers made from mochi. The character's name is exactly the same as the sweet's, just written in katakana instead of kanji.
  • Monaka's home planet of Wagashi (ワガシ wagashi) is likely taken directly from 和菓子 (wagashi), which is a catch-all name for Japanese confectionery in general (which includes monaka). Both names are exactly the same, with the planet just being written in katakana instead of kanji.
  • In the Japanese wordplay game of shiritori, each player must begin their word with the final syllable of the previous word. The first player unable to come up with an answer or to end their word with an "N" loses and ends the game. The complete game of shiritori included in this chapter went as follows:

Marron: "Bald head [hage-atama]"
No. 18: "Pillow [makura]"
Oolong: "B-Bugle [rappa]"
Turtle Hermit: "Panties [pantsu]"
Jaco: "Sword [tsurugi]"
Galactic King: "Galactic King….. [Ginga-ō]"
Videl: "Baby's first cry [ubu-goe]"
Chi-Chi: "Dirty old man [ero-oyaji]"
Whis: "………..Jiru-Jiru"
Goku: "Huh? What's a Jiru-Jiru?"
Whis: "A bird native to my planet."
Goku: "Whoa."
Chi-Chi: "OK, the next person has ru."
Beerus: "H-H-H…House-sitting [rusuban]"

    • Considering that shiritori is not widely known in English-speaking countries, Viz's English edition had Kuririn briefly explain the concept before starting the game. In Japan, whoever ends a word with an "N" loses (since there are no words beginning with the syllabic "N" sound, ん). This concept would be difficult to explain in the small space provided by speech bubbles, so Beerus just loses by not starting a word with the last letter of the previous one.
  • The Galactic King was originally mentioned by name only in the final chapter of Akira Toriyama and Masakazu Katsura's Jiya in 2010, which was the duo's second entry in the Galactic Patrol series.[1] The character is formally unveiled in Chapter 2 of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, a 2013 standalone prequel to Dragon Ball by Toriyama himself.[2]
