Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump manga first appeared in Weekly Shōnen Jump on 05 January 1980, nearly five years before the Dragon Ball manga would begin in late 1984. Dr. Slump ran for a total of 236 chapters, the last of which went on sale 28 August 1984. After a short hiatus, Toriyama returned with Dragon Ball on 20 November.
The first of the eighteen Dr. Slump collected volumes called tankōbon (単行本; "separate volumes") went on sale 09 August 1980. In most English-speaking countries, the tankōbon are referred to as "graphic novels", while most people in Japan simply refer to them as "comics" (コミックス), taken from English. Each tankōbon volume contained roughly 12 chapters and was printed in a greyscale format only.
By proportion, Dr. Slump had significantly more color pages than Dragon Ball. These color pages were not available outside of their original serial publications in Weekly Shōnen Jump until Dr. Slump got its limited-edition kanzenban release, the first two of the fifteen volumes going on sale 04 October 2006, nearly four years after its successor Dragon Ball got its own kanzenban release.
Viz's English adaptation of Dr. Slump was released in tankōbon format both digitally and in print. In Japan, the tankōbon volumes were only released in print. They are still in print, and the digital version is instead based on the kanzenban release, including the original color pages and kanzenban volume references, with a chapter structure borrowed from the nine Big Volumes.
