Dragon Ball Kanzenban

From Kanzenshuu Dragon Ball Wiki
Kanzenban edition spine art.

In December 2002, Shueisha began to re-release the Dragon Ball manga in a special kanzenban (完全版; "Perfect Edition") format. The kanzenban release condensed the original 42 tankōbon volumes into 34 volumes, with two volumes released each month. Each volumes contains approximately 15 chapters and is printed on A5 size higher quality premium paper stock. Unlike the tankōbon, the kanzenban retained all of the colored pages originally printed in Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Features

Digitally redrawn title page for Dragon Ball Chapter 5.

The kanzenban volumes feature restored artwork and newly drawn cover illustrations by author Akira Toriyama. Each volume also features an insert poster of its respective volume's cover illustration. Every other first-edition volume of the kanzenban release came packaged with a "Dragon Ball Children" insert pamphlet featuring tribute images of the Dragon Ball world, as seen through the eyes of current popular manga artists in Japan who were children while the series was being released. The pamphlets also include short articles on which these artists discuss Akira Toriyama's influence on their own works. The first ten of these seventeen pamphlets were later reprinted in the first companion guide, "Dragon Ball Landmark".

Alterations

Volume 34 Alterations

  • Chapter 516 includes three new pages at the end of the chapter that expand the original final page, providing a more dramatic depiction of the destruction of Majin Buu. With the exception of three new panels, with the main one being Majin Buu getting hit by the Genki-Dama head on, all of the artwork is recycled and expanded from the original version. While some of the dialogue was very slightly modified, the final two panels included the only bits of actual new dialogue. These additional panels were drawn by Akira Toriyama.
  • The final chapter features a completely new ending written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama. This new ending expands upon the original to include two additional pages in which Goku hands down Kinto-Un to Uub. The chapter's final narration was also rewritten to shift the source of Earth's safety from the Dragon Balls to that of the "incredible guys" that reside there. In addition, Akira Toriyama's original goodbye message has been replaced with two new panels of Vegeta declaring his ongoing aspiration to defeat Goku.

Other Alterations

  • The title pages for chapters 5 and 86 have been digitally redrawn, presumably because the original color versions were lost. In the process, the cigarette in Bulma's mouth was removed from the title page for chapter 5, matching the artwork's appearance in the Dragon Ball series' ending animation.
  • The name of Pilaf's underling Shuu has been changed in chapter 110 to "Soba" in order to remain consistent within the manga continuity and match his first manga appearance in chapter 18.
  • In chapter 389, the date of the Cell Games is referred to as a mysterious "M. 17th". To match the change made for the Dragon Ball Z TV series, the date has been changed to "May 26th".
