Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock is a promotional manga series written by Naho Ooishi, with additional character designs by Akira Toriyama and in coordination with Bandai Namco Entertainment, that originally ran for three chapters in Shueisha's V-Jump magazine. The series follows Bardock in a sequel "what if?" story following his brief encounter with Freeza and his subsequent battle in the past with Chilled.
Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock was itself part of a larger merchandising campaign with the ongoing Dragon Ball Heroes arcade game, which at the time was set to feature Bardock in Super Saiyan form for the first time.
Plot
Bardock has somehow survived his confrontation with Freeza, and is being treated on Planet Plant by a doctor. Two goons soon arrive to conquer Planet Plant, but are quickly defeated by Bardock. After not hearing from the men he sent out ten days ago, "Chilled" decides to check on Planet Plant personally.
History
As part of a new update for Dragon Ball Heroes in summer 2011, Bardock was set to receive a new Super Saiyan transformation. In conjunction with this update, a larger media campaign rolled out highlighting Bardock across various pieces of merchandise.
In the July 2011 issue of Shueisha's video game-focused magazine V-Jump, a vague reference was made to an upcoming Dragon Ball Heroes-related manga project in the next month's issue. The magazine's official website later clarified Naho Ooishi would be taking on said "special project": a manga series called "Episode of Bardock", which was slated to be "sequel" to the original television special. The story would be released in three parts over the course of the August, September, and October 2011 V-Jump issues.
Alongside the Dragon Ball Heroes updates and Episode of Bardock manga serialization, the original Bardock television special, along with the Trunks television special, were set to receive a budget-priced (¥1000) "Special Selection DVD" on 05 August 2011; these specials had previously only been made available on home video in Japan as extras within 2003's premium Dragon Ball Z "Dragon Box" DVD sets.
An animated adaptation of the Episode of Bardock manga was announced in November 2011 and later premiered at Jump Festa 2012 on 17 December 2011. The animated adaptation's story stayed faithful to its original manga incarnation, with a few moments of new material at the very end. Following the anime's premiere, a complete collection of the manga was reprinted in the April 2012 issue of V-Jump, released on 21 February 2012; this reprint featured two new pages at the very end, mirroring the new material from the animated adaptation placed at the end of its third chapter, and would be included in yet another collected edition in 2014.

Supporting Characters
- Cavira (キャビラ Kyabira): One of Chilled's henchmen. Likely gets his name from non-fertilized sturgeon roe, better known to most as "caviar." In Japanese, the phonetics of the French word "caviar" are approximated using katakana as キャビア (kyabia). Although the trailing "r" of "caviar" is phonetically present with the hard "a" sound in Japanese, it is not visually seen when the word is romanized. To create this name pun, the "r" was playfully reintroduced into the characters name as キャビラ (kyabira), although still not as a trailing consonant. Cavira's single horn is most likely a homage to the large tail fin of the Sturgeon fish he is named after.
- Tobi (トビ Tobi): Like Cavira, Chilled's other henchman Tobi also likely has a fish roe name pun. His name is appears to be based on the Japanese word とびこ (tobiko), which is used to describe Flying Fish roe. This type of roe is most widely known for its use in creating certain types of sushi. It is most likely because of his Flying Fish name pun that Tobi features two fin-like horns on his head resembling the Flying Fish's larger pectoral fins.
- Ipana (イパナ Ipana): TBD. Likely gets his name from the pineapple plant (パイナップル painappuru). As with Chilled's henchmen, Ipana's head reflects the likely name pun, with his own shaped like a pineapple.
- Beri (ベリー Beri): TBD
Chapters

In its original V-Jump serialization, the primary three chapters were simply labeled as "Part 1", "Part 2", and "Part 3". For its "Super Kanzenban" release, these three chapters were formally assigned titles.

Releases

Original Serialization
The three Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock chapters originally debuted in the August 2011 (released 21 June 2011), September 2011 (released 21 July 2011), and October 2011 (released 20 August 2011) issues of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine, respectively.
Chapter Reprints
A reprint of the first chapter was published later the same year in the 2011 No. 3 (Fall) issue of Saikyō Jump, released 11 August 2011.
Kanzenban
The April 2012 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine, released 21 February 2012, includes a "kanzenban" edition of Episode of Bardock compiling all three chapters across one color cover page, 51 black and white content pages, three black and white Dragon Ball context/history pages, and three black and white promotional pages. Included in this reprint are two brand-new pages in the third chapter, which themselves mirror new material from the animated adaptation with Bardock walking off into the sunset.
Though labeled as a "kanzenban" on the first page, the collected edition is actually an insert bound within the larger magazine itself, and is not perforated for removal.
Super Kanzenban
The March 2014 issue of Shueisha's Saikyō Jump magazine, released 04 February 2014, includes a "Super Kanzenban" supplemental booklet compiling all of Episode of Bardock across one color cover page, 57 black and white content pages, and four black and white interview pages. This edition includes the two new pages that previously debuted in 2012's "kanzenban" edition in V-Jump.
Legacy
Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock marks the primary (and since then consistent) use of "Bardock" as the standard transliterated spelling for the character's name in Japan; spellings such as "Barduck" had previously been in use.
