DeSpo FighterZ is a promotional e-Sports-themed manga series written by Hiroshi Otogi, in coordination with Bandai Namco Entertainment, which ran in Shueisha's bimonthly Saikyō Jump from its September 2018 to September 2020 issues, spanning 13 regular chapters (as well as one bonus chapter within the Jump Victory Carnival 2019 Official Guidebook). The series follows a group of young protagonists in a world obsessed with eSports as they attempt to become the ultimate Dragon Ball FighterZ pro-gamers. DeSpo FighterZ received two collected volumes compiling the full series in December 2019 and October 2020, respectively.
Plot
With the advent of the collapsible phone-and-tablet device, the Viewtiphone, as well as its attachable game controller accessory, the Battle View Cross, or BV-X for short, the world has been struck with a wave of pro-gaming fever. The profession of "pro-gamer" consistently polls as the most popular dream among young people. In this era, one of the most popular spectator games is Dragon Ball FighterZ, also known simply as FighterZ, and among the most famous FighterZ players is the world-renowned Shindo.
Mamoru, the young son of a candy company owner, dreams of putting together his own team of competitors for the national Team FighterZ Tournament. In pursuit of his goal, he recruits the hot-blooded Kenzo, and has personal interactions with Shindo as well.
History

DeSpo FighterZ was first announced via the official Dragon Ball video game Twitter account 17 July 2018 (with artwork from an advertisement set to be printed within the September 2018 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine just a few days later), with the series scheduled to debut in the September issue of of Saikyō Jump releasing 03 August 2018.[1] The manga's publication coincided with the release of Dragon Ball FighterZ for the Nintendo Switch.
Author Hiroshi Otogi had previously contributed Dragon Ball Fusions the Manga!! to Saikyō Jump, which concluded with the magazine's May 2018 issue, taking only one issue (July 2018) off before commencing DeSpo FighterZ in the September 2018 issue.
The final chapter of DeSpo FighterZ ended with a note for readers to look forward to Otogi's next work, though any possible future project has yet to be officially announced:[4][5]

Characters
Major characters
- Shindo (シンドウ Shindō): A professional FighterZ player with a serious demeanor. He is known as a "speed specialist," and referred to by aliases including "The Man Who Never Smiles" and "The World Pro-Gaming Prince." Shindo holds games dear and considers them great fun.[6]
- Mamoru (マモル Mamoru): The rich son of a major candy-company owner, Mamoru aspires to assemble his own professional FighterZ team in order to compete in the national Team FighterZ Tournament. Mamoru is willing to travel even to dangerous areas in search of competitors he thinks might be useful, such as the street-brawler Kenzo. He constantly carries sweets in his pockets.
- Kenzo (ケンゾー Kenzō): Also known as the "Back Alley Saiyan," a street-brawler recruited to Mamoru's FighterZ team after being challenged to a match by Shindo, which he wins only as the result of a handicap. Kenzo is easily identified by his pink afro. He prefers fistfighting to video-games and is constantly at risk of running low on blood sugar, requiring Mamoru to supply him with snacks.
Supporting characters
- Judge Man (審判男 (ジャッジマン) Jajjiman): A mysterious man sporting the kanji for "judge" on his forehead. Judge Man appears wherever eSports are played and quietly disappears once the match is over. He acts as referee and is the sole possessor of the eSports Projector, a device capable of projecting a holographic display of eSports matches into the air.[6] His favorite food is pea sprouts.[7]
- Musashi (ムサシ Musashi): Mamoru's butler. Musashi has a bit of an overprotective streak and frowns upon Kenzo and Mamoru's friendship. As a FighterZ player, he is particularly skilled in defense.
- Murakumo (ムラクモ Murakumo): A pro-gamer who loses a publicly broadcast match against Shindo.
