Otta Magetta is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise, debuting as a fighter from Universe 6 in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō.

Biography

Magetta is known as a Metal Man, a robot-like race. He overcame his weakness in the Tournament of Power by covering his ears, but he lost to Vegeta's Final Flash.[1]

Name

While the character is usually referred to simply as "Magetta", the "full name" of "Otta Magetta" is introduced in episode 35 (and subsequently manga chapter 11) of the Dragon Ball Super series. The full name is likely a pun on the verb ottamageta (おっ魂消た or more commonly おったまげた), a past-tense inflection of ottamageru (おったまげる), which means to be astounded or flabbergasted. It is also possible that the name was influenced by "automata" (ōtomata オートマタ) and that "Magetta" in particular was influenced by the famous giant robots Mazinger (マジンガー majingā) and Getter Robo (ゲッターロボ gettā robo).

It is possible that "Otta" is intended to be a family name.

Production

Akira Toriyama's designs for the various Universe 6 competitors as revealed in the March 2016 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine.

A "Dragon Ball Super Completion Announcement Event" was held 01 July 2015 in Tokyo to promote the then-upcoming debut (and effective production completion of the first episode) of the Dragon Ball Super television series. Following a brief introductions from producer Atsushi Kido at the event, a message from Akira Toriyama was displayed onscreen; while the latter portion of his message had been previously published in V-Jump and was available on the series' official website, the former portion of his comments revealed new details of the series' plot:[2]

"Dragon Ball Super" is a complete continuation of the Majin Boo story arc. It's got a bit of post-battle aftermath, continues with the "Battle of Gods" arc where the God of Destruction Beerus appears and the "Resurrection 'F'" arc where Freeza comes back to life, and then, I've written a strange new story where they finally depart from this universe. They're fighting against their neighbors, Universe 6! They'll yell at me if I give away too many spoilers, so I'll keep the rest a secret, but they're chasing after giant Super Dragon Balls; I think things will unfold in a bright and simple way, that will be really fun and exciting!
— Akira Toriyama

Alongside other Universe 6 characters Cabba, Hit, Frost, and Botamo (as well as Universe 7 "competitor" Monaka), Magetta was designed by Akira Toriyama himself.

In the brief period of time in which the Dragon Ball Super manga was ahead of its television series counterpart, Magetta initially debuted in the series' seventh chapter, released 19 December 2015 in the February 2016 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump magazine; the corresponding television episode content aired 21 February 2016.

Ahead of the character's television series debut, Toei's official Dragon Ball Super website shared social media icons for the various Universe 6 team members, serving as the debut revelation of the character's name as "Magetta";[3][4] the character would not be named in the manga until the following chapter,[5] released just a few days later in the March 2016 issue of V-Jump, which also contained Toriyama's designs and brief write-ups for all five Universe 6 fighters:[6]

Something is burning inside his body, and smoke rises from his head!! Though he looks just like a robot, he's actually a species of alien known as a "Metal Man". What kind of moves will he unleash!?

Performance

Magetta is played by Naoki Tatsuta, the voice of Oolong, in the Dragon Ball Super television series. Tatsuta took over the roles of North Kaiō and the series narration when Jōji Yanami fell ill in 2015.[7]

In FUNimation's English dub, Magetta's lines are produced electronically.
