Kale is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Kale makes her debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 89, broadcast on 07 May 2017 on Fuji TV, as a Saiyan of Universe 6.
Biography
Kale is a member of a gang on Planet Sadla led by Caulifla. Kale adores Caulifla from the bottom of her heart as her protégée. She is usually a timid girl, but when her feelings swing violently she transforms into a brutal Super Saiyan.[1]
Universe Survival Arc
Recruitment
When Cabba comes to recruit Caulifla for the Tournament of Power, Kale hangs back and doesn't say anything while Cabba uses his Super Saiyan transformation to convince Caulifla to join the team.[2] Kale tags along and watches while Cabba demonstrates the transformation for Caulifla. Caulifla demands that he teach her how to do it, so Cabba tries making Caulifla angry to trigger the transformation. When Caulifla gets angry at Cabba, Kale watches with pride, but this does not seem to work as a trigger for Caulifla, so instead Cabba explains the tingly sensation he feels in his back when he transforms. Caulifla recreates this feeling and transforms successfully, though she cannot hold it for long.
Kale watches nervously as Caulifla tries to transform again; she pulls it off and manages to hold the form this time. Cabba praises her for having mastered it so quickly, but then Caulifla fires an attack at the sky, blowing Cabba a short distance away. He then explains to her how to release the form, warning her that it will drain her energy quickly. Cabba says he will give her his contact information while she thinks about the tournament, but she has already decided to join the team, along with her protégée Kale. Caulifla tells Kale to come out from where she is hiding and then instructs her to try the tingly thing, but Kale does not believe she will be able to do it. Caulifla encourages her to try it anyway.[3]

Kale tries to tell Caulifla that she doesn't think she can do that Super Saiyan thing. Unlike Caulifla, she is only... Caulifla does not allow her to finish her thought; she is tired of hearing Kale sell herself short. She is a Saiyan; Caulifla is sure she can do it, and tells her change her attitude and give it a go. Caulifla demonstrates the transformation for her one more time, and Kale looks on in adoration. Caulifla suggests Cabba demonstrate too, but this does not impress Kale as much. Caulifla gives Kale some more encouragement, and she says she will try. She tries to create the tingly feeling in her back, and Cabba thinks she might be getting it, but she loses steam without transforming. Caulifla berates Cabba, saying Kale is clearly not getting it, and Cabba suggests that maybe her instructions are not clear enough.
Kale watches this exchange and starts to get angry at Cabba, but Caulifla concedes that Cabba has a point. She tells Kale they will try the other way: making her angry. Caulifla tries to insult Kale, calling her a monkey, a gorilla, and a chimpanzee, but her heart is not in it. She tells Cabba to try instead, so he does, but he only manages to make Kale cry. Caulifla and Cabba start arguing, and Kale is overcome by self-loathing. In anger at herself, her power begins to skyrocket. At first Caulifla is excited, but then she notices that something is different about what is happening to Kale. Lighting is flashing everywhere. Cabba tells Kale not to raise her power any more, but she ignores him. Once she is finished transforming, she tells Cabba that he will be her first blood sacrifice.
Caulifla continues to be excited about Kale's amazing power, but Kale is attacking Cabba with the intent to kill him. Caulifla angrily asks Cabba what he did to make Kale want to kill him, but he insists that he did not do anything. Cabba thinks that maybe she is angry because he and Caulifla were being friendly with each other. This confuses Caulifla, but Cabba says they have no choice but to make her change back. He transforms into a Super Saiyan and attacks Kale, but he is no match for her. He desperately tries to convince her to calm down, but she will not be deterred. She knocks Cabba out of Super Saiyan and observes that her power is still rising. She charges an attack to throw at Cabba, and Caulifla realizes that this is dangerous. Caulifla also transforms into a Super Saiyan, and just as the attack is about to hit Cabba, she takes it a step further to Super Saiyan 2, knocking Kale's attack aside. She tells Kale not to get the wrong idea: she would never fall for someone like Cabba. Kale's power is amazing, just as expected from her protégée. Kale then loses her power and her transformation, falling unconscious from the sky. Caulifla goes to catch her, and Cabba thinks they might have found an amazing team member on accident. Kale smiles peacefully in Caulifla's arms, and Caulifla laughs to herself.[5]
Tournament of Power
Kale and the others from Universe 6 arrive at the World of Void just after Universe 7. Cabba calls out to his master Vegeta, and Kale and Caulifla follow close behind him, though Kale is hiding behind Caulifla. Goku asks who that is, so Cabba tells him that Caulifla is a Saiyan. Goku is amazed to see a female Saiyan; he tries to shake hands with Caulifla, but she slaps it away, saying they cannnot be friends; they are fighting to see which universe is strongest. Goku thinks Caulifla is just like him, but Caulifla is unimpressed. Kale tries to get her attention, and then Goku finally notices her, asking if she is a Saiyan too. Cabba says yes, introducing her; she becomes nervous and tries to hide behind Caulifla again. When the Universe 11 warriors arrive, Goku, Vegeta, and Cabba take notice; Caulifla thinks the Universe 7 Saiyans are nothing to worry about if they are worried about those wimps; Vegeta is offended by this, but Gohan encourages him to let it go. Kale and the others pose with their teammates when the Great Priest calls their universe.[6]
Kale is intimidated by all the strong-looking warriors, and Caulifla chides her for making them look weak. She will be fine as long as she can transform like she did before.[7]
Name

Kale's name is taken directly from the katakana transliteration of the English word Kale (ケール kēru). This name pun follows the theme of Saiyans being named after vegetables.
Kale uses atashi (私・あたし), a feminine diminution of the gender-neutral watashi (私・わたし), to refer to herself when she is in her normal form.
Production
Kale was introduced in a preview of the Limit-Break x Survivor animation, initially presented after the Japanese broadcast of Dragon Ball Super Episode 75 on 22 January 2017.[9] In the preview, she could be seen transforming from her normal form into her bersereker Super Saiyan state. Her controlled Super Saiyan form was first was revealed in the April 2017 issue of V-Jump, published on 21 February 2017,[8] but this form was not seen in the anime until Dragon Ball Super Episode 101, broadcast on 30 July 2017.
An interview with Dragon Ball Super producer Sakoru Takami and director Ryōta Nakamura published near the end of the anime's broadcast run clarified these questions.
Nakamura: The Universe 6 Saiyan Caulifla was another one of Toriyama-sensei‘s character designs.
Takami: She wasn’t part of the initial rough draft. During a story conference, it was mentioned that Broli was very popular.
Nakamura: From there, we came up with the character of Kale.
Takami: We wanted a Broli-like character, but it would be boring to have it be exactly the same. So we made the character a girl, and designed her at Toei Animation. When we showed her to Toriyama-sensei, he went along with it and drew Caulifla.
Nakamura: So we decided to pair up Kale and Caulifla.
Takami: Those two turned out incredibly well.[10]
An early unpublished biography for Kale was found in the source code of Toei's dedicated website, using Vados as a placeholder image. This shows that the character was originally meant to play off Cabba before Toriyama's changes.
ビビリでキャベにいつも怒られている。超サイヤ人になるためにキャベに怒りを解放するんだと言われた結果、抑えられたストレスで狂戦士状態に。キレるとすごい力を出す。
Always gets chewed out by Cabba for being too nervous. After Cabba tells her to unleash her anger in order to become Super Saiyan, her pent-up stress takes her into a berserker state. Has incredible power once she cuts loose.[11]
The biography that was eventually published was much simpler.
Caulifla's protégée. A Universe 6 Saiyan, but bashful.[12]
The final version of her bio is translated in the introductory paragraph of the biography section on this page.
Performance
Kale is voiced by Yukana in her first role for the Dragon Ball franchise. In the Funimation dub, Kale is voiced by Dawn M. Bennett, also in her first franchise role.
Dragon Ball Super producer Sakoru Takami and series director Ryōta Nakamura commented on Yukana's performance, and her dynamic with Caulifla's voice actress Yuka Komatsu, in an interview published near the end of the series' broadcast run.
Nakamura: I think one reason [Kale and Caulifla] were so successful is because they had Yukana-san and Yuka Komatsu-san voicing them.
Interviewer: I was surprised when I heard the Yukana-san was going to be in Dragon Ball Super. It seemed to go against her image…?!
Nakamura: Yeah (laughs). I’m glad that Yukana-san and Komatsu-san were involved. They seemed to work together incredibly well. When Kale and Caulifla used the Potara to merge into Kafla, they had to sync up their voices for the performance. Yukana-san was amazing. Komatsu-san normally looked at the images while recording her lines, but Yukana-san looked at Komatsu-san‘s mouth to sync up with her. Seeing that made me think "hey, these two make a good pair."[10]
