Universe Twelve is called the "Ultimate Universe". Their rank at the beginning of the Tournament of Power is No. 2 out of 12, which grants them exemption from the tournament.[1] The universe is ruled by the KaiōshinAg, the God of DestructionGiin, and his attendant AngelMartine.
Ag, a Kaiōshin known for saying virtuous things, aimed to take his already-mature universe to greater heights in the Tournament of Power.[2][3] Ag sees his universe's exemption from the tournament as an affirmation of his superiority as a god.[4] Ag's name pun is unknown, but many Kaiōshin appear to have been named after deities, and Agni (アグニ Aguni), the fire god of Hinduism and Indo-European mythologies, is a likely source for his name.[5]
Giin carries out the minimum necessary destruction mercilessly but without discrimination. Before the Tournament of Power, he had grown bored because he was running out of things to destroy.[6] Giin's name is likely adapted from "gin" (ジン jin), a juniper-flavored spirit made by either redistilling ethanol of agricultural origin or adding approved natural flavoring to a neutral spirit of agricultural origin. The character name adds a vowel elongation to the first syllable of the katakana used to write "gin" in Japanese. This name pun follows the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.[5]
Martine doesn't have to do much compared to other universes thanks to her excellent Kaiōshin and God of Destruction. She is thinking of trying to lift those two up even higher.[1] Martine's name is likely derived from "martini" (マティーニ matiini), a cocktail made with gin and vermouth, and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist. This name pun follows the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.[5]
