North City is a fictional city in the world of Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama. It was seen from a distance in Dragon Ball Chapter 349 as the heroes sought to locate Doctor Gero's Lab, but not directly depicted until Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'. The city is located on Earth in sector A-3, however the various depictions and guide book material are not consistent with respect to the city's geography.

General Overview

Located in the chilly north of sector A-3[1], North City is surrounded on three sides by mountains and forests and on the fourth by a lake or bay.[2][note 1] Very little is described about the city itself except that, in a western style, cars drive on the right. The forests and mountains around the city are a "No Trespassing" area, perhaps some sort of nature reserve.[3] The climate is depicted as cold in the mountains, but weather in the city appears to be more temperate.[note 2]

Sometime between Age 750 and Age 764, Doctor Gero moves into the mountains near North City and builds a laboratory there which he uses to build the Artificial Humans. While the location of the lab was secret, Bulma and other members of the scientific community were aware of it.[4] This lab was destroyed by Kuririn and Trunks in May Age 767[5], although some sections of the lab may have remained intact after the attack.[6]

North City was destroyed by Freeza in Age 779.

In Age 779, Freeza destroys North City as a show of force on arriving on Earth for the first time since his resurrection. After Freeza was defeated by Son Goku and Vegeta (with an assist by Whis), Bulma promised to restore the city using the Dragon Balls, however this was not depicted on screen. A restoration could not have taken place prior to Age 780.[7][note 3]

Locations Nearby

Doctor Gero's Lab

A lab hidden in the mountains near North City where Doctor Gero developed several Artificial Humans including No. 16 through No. 20 and Cell.

Northern Mountains

Frigid mountains that surround the city in nearly every direction. A highway leads out of the city through the mountains to the south.[note 4]

Western Desert

A hot and arid desert mentioned as being near North City by Mr. Popo in Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans Episode 1. In Age 767, Son Gohan destroyed a Destron Gas generator hidden in a pyramid there. The location of this desert as near Metro North may have been a dialog or scripting error; this better aligns with the climate and desert adjacent to South City.[8]

Known Residents

Name

North City is one of the four cardinal-direction cities mention in the manga, including West City (Capsule Corp Headquarters), South City (near the site of the Tenka'ichi Budōkai), and East City (destroyed by Nappa). In Japanese, 北の都 (Kita no miyako) does not need to be read as a proper noun and could also be translated as "northern city".

Tidbits

  • The map provided in Daizenshuu 4 does not depict a body of water close enough to North City to match the depiction in Resurrection F.
  • Musuka planned to take his circus to North City in Age 774, but it is not known if he made it.[9]

Notes

  1. In Dragon Ball Chapter 349 and Dragon Ball Z Episode 133, the city is depicted as being mostly surrounded by mountains. In Resurrection 'F' however, the city abuts a lake or bay. As the original manga did not depict the whole city, this is not necessarily an inconsistency.
  2. In Dragon Ball Z, Kuririn and Tenshinhan complained of the cold in May while looking for Doctor Gero's lab, while residents of the city wore shorts and summer clothes as late as September in Resurrection F.
  3. In the Dragon Ball Super version of these events, North City was never destroyed by Freeza.
  4. The Northern Mountains are named in Daizenshuu 4, but may not be intended as a proper noun.
