"A Crucial, Honorable Match! Goku vs Tenlong" is the eightieth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 23 September 1987, receiving a ratings share of 21.2%. It was written by Toshiki Inoue and directed by Yoshihiro Ueda.

Synopsis

Continuing on his training journey, in the city Goku learns of a martial artist named Chin Taiken, and ends up taking the place of the ill martial artist in an important match! But Taiken's son, Shōken, doesn't like the idea of Goku participating, and feeds him laxative-spiked food. The match with Tenlong, master of Hyōga-Ryū, then begins! An intense battle unfolds, but Goku's stomach starts to feel strange due to the laxative! However, he somehow endures this to win the match!!

Summary

Prologue

A storm rages over the mountains as Son Goku hops up a mountain while carrying a gigantic boulder on his back. Some time later, he navigates a narrow mountain path while walking only on the tips of his fingers. The narrator intones that Goku's training takes him far to the south.

Part A

Goku continues walking on his fingertips down the mountain, but the path becomes too steep and he loses control. He flies off the mountain, only saving himself from falling to the river below by grabbing a passing tree with his tail. Unfortunately, the tree snaps and he plummets anyway but lands safely on the banks of the river. An old woman cries out nearby that she has lost a shirt while washing it in the river and Goku springs after it, returning it to her easily. He asks her if there are any strong people nearby for him to spar against and she tells him of Chin Taiken, a martial artist from the nearby town. She tells him that he can find the town by following the river and Goku bounds off.

Goku arrives at the town and looks around. He hears someone yell out about a fight and runs to see. He find a man (Chin Taiken) and his son (Shōken) being accused of theft by some local bullies led by Shaolong. They want to bring him to the police, but the man refuses and defeats the bullies easily. Even Goku is impressed! The father is sick however and begins coughing; the bullies remark that he will be killed at the Imperial Match the following day anyway so why not do it now? Goku finds the bully's missing wallet on the ground and is accused of stealing it himself. The bully attacks Goku, but before they can land a blow they are interrupted by the bully's brother. The new arrival scolds his brother and apologies to Goku and the others before leaving. Once he is away, he scolds Shaolong saying that he will be the one to kill Chin Taiken at tomorrow's match.

Goku is thrilled to learn that the man that he just helped is Chin Taiken himself and asks to spar. Taiken agrees to the match and takes him to his dojo for the match. They leap into the air and Taiken seems to have the upper hand, but they both land cleanly. Before they can continue, Taoken begins coughing again and the match is called off.

Once Chin Taoken is resting, Goku remarks that he did not see even see Taiken's attack while they were sparring. Shōken reveals that Goku was hit by the Chin School's special technique, Gensei-ken. Goku asks if the technique is similar to the Zanzōken and Taiken is impressed that the boy knows of that technique. He explains that he has become ill just prior to the "Imperial Match", a contest in front of the local king to determine who will be the kingdom's martial arts instructor. He is to face Hyōga Tenlong, the master of the Hyōga Style and the man that Goku met in the town earlier. Goku offers to get Taiken medicine, but he is warned that the Hyōga School may seek vengeance on him. Goku is nonplussed, but agrees not to do anything that would desecrate the following day's match.

A short time later, Tenlong and Shaolong are at a nearby restaurant. Shaolong has had too much to drink, while his brother is only eating soup. As Goku passes by outside, Shaolong tosses an empty bottle at Goku, narrowly missing him. Goku refuses to fight but Shaolong insists. Tenlong tells his brother only that he must not kill Goku.

Part B

Goku refuses to fight, but the drunken Shaolong comes after him anyway. Goku dodges blow after blow, refusing to break his promise by getting into a fight. The battle onto a bridge and Goku dodges just in time to send his assailant plunging into the water below. Tenlong approaches and scolds Goku for assaulting the honor of his school before attacking him, successfully landing blow after blow on Goku that he is barely able to block. He leaves a batter Goku on the bride and walks away. Goku is pleased that he kept the medicine safe and that he did not break his promise to Chin Taiken. He delivers the medication to Shōken.

At the Hyōga School, Tenlong spars with his students fighting first with his hands behind his back and then without using his legs. He defeats one of his students using only his head!

Outside of the Chin school, Shōken practices against a makeshift mu ren zhuang (a wooden training beam) outside, while Goku and his father sleep inside. He wishes that he could be the one to defeat Tenlong and imagines that he is punching him instead of the wooden pillar.

The following morning, Taiken informs his son that he will forfeit the match. In his current health, the most sportsmanlike thing to do would be to give up and allow Tenlong to become the kingdom's martial arts instructor. Shōken volunteers to take his father's place, but he refuses to allow it. Goku arrives and volunteers to fight Tenlong himself and the pair reluctantly agrees. Taiken informs Goku that Tenlong has never lost a match. Shōken insists that he should compete because he is stronger than Goku, but Taiken tells his son that Goku is far stronger than him. Shōken storms out of the dojo to make breakfast. While no one is watching, he places in a pill into Goku's soup then watches as Goku eats it all.

A short time later, the trio arrive at the king's palace for a match. Shōken is surprised that Goku is not feeling the effects of the medication yet, even asking him if he needs to use the bathroom. Goku says no. The arena is set up similarly to a Tenka'ichi Budōkai but on a smaller scale. Shōken looks uncomfortable but a referee comes out to say that the match is about to begin. King Wonton and Queen Harumaki emerge to kickoff the competition. The referee announces the competitors: Tenlong from the Hyōga School and Son Goku from the Chin School. The referee reveals that the rules state that only one competitor from each school can enter, but that Goku counts if he is representing the Chin school. Tenlong reluctantly agrees but tells Goku that he won't be as soft on him as he was the day before. The referee announces that the match will end when someone gives up or loses consciousness.

Goku and Tenlong begin their battle and this time Goku manages to keep up with his attacks, just barely. Goku tries to distract Tenlong with a Zanzōken, but he recognizes the technique and launches himself into a Hyōga Senpū Kyaku which allows him to quickly strike all of the afterimages one after the other to discover which one was Goku. He nearly succeeds in knocking Goku out of the ring. At this moment, the medicine kicks in and Goku suddenly needs to use the bathroom. He asks for the timeout, but the referee refuses and the spectators laugh. Goku is kicked around the ring over and over again as he clutches his stomach. Shōken yells for Goku to get up and accidentally drops a vial of the medicine that he used. His father realizes what he has done. Goku still struggles to keep from messing himself and launches into the Chin's school's Gensei-ken technique. This knocks out Tenlong and Goku wins! He quickly runs to the bathroom.

Later, Tenlong and his brother are contrite and wish to train under Chin Taiken. Goku says that he needs to move on, but that he would face Tenlong again someday. Shōken hands Goku a parting gift of rice balls as he heads off into the wilderness once again.
