G9 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 4 which was broadcast on 19 March 1986.
Overview
G9 is a mostly dissonant piece featuring Harmon-muted trumpets. The full composition is part c of the suite entitled "A Demon Rears Its Head", which is track #08 on both the Ongakushū record and disc #2 of the Daizenshuu.
G9 is given the title "The Battle Sneaks Into View" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-55 based on its placement in the series.
Form and Analysis
G9's setting in F Minor is tenuous. The first note is an F, and the synth keyboard plays the root (F) approached by a leading tone grace note. The Harmon-muted trumpets sound the fifth (C) and a ♯4 (B♮) together, making a semi-tone dissonance. This is mirrored on keyboard synth. There is no third; the designation of "minor" is based entirely on the relationship to the arc's main key and the darker affect of the prominent dissonances.
