Makafushigi Adventure! (魔訶不思議アドベンチャー!, "Mystical Adventure!") is the first opening theme song for the Dragon Ball TV anime series, used from episode 1 until episode 153. It was written by Yukinojō Mori with vocals by Hiroki Takahashi. As the major theme used by the program for the entirety of its run, the animation behind the theme was updated several times to reflect the changing plot and antagonists. A widescreen version was also used for the first two Dragon Ball movies, with special animation commissioned for Dragon Ball Movie 3 to reflect the plot of that film. The song was also included in video games and other media.

Production

The following production notes are included in the booklet accompanying the Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z Daizenshuu:

The opening theme song is included here in its TV-Size version. The lyrics are by Yuriko Mori; the composition is by Takeshi Ike, who also composed a large number of insert songs; and the arrangement is by Kōhei Tanaka, known for his work on Matchless Raijin-Oh, among others.
In making the theme song, an audition was held, and the lyrics chosen became "Mystical Adventure!"; apparently, the phrase that clinched it was "This world is one big treasure island". Furthermore, the singer, Hiroki Takahashi, was also chosen by audition; having once got the top prize at a rock event held in Yokohama, he was selected due to the staff's aim of using a "rookie not held back by preconceived notions". The video itself came to have a speedy and powerful finish, which doesn't lose out to that enthusiasm.
In addition, the video was updated in part several times as the story progressed.

These notes accompany the TV-Size version on Disc 2; the full-size version on Disc 1 is accompanied by the full lyrics.

Opening Animation

First Variation Breakdown

The first variation was used for the first 101 episodes.

Scene Notes Visual Reference
Over a star field, the seven Dragon Balls fly into view. They fly past a sun with a solar flare that resembles a dragon. The DRAGONBALL logo appears with the one-star ball being replaced by a logo featuring a smiling Chinese dragon. The dragon is taken directly from the title page of Dragon Ball Chapter 1.

The scene changes to sunrise over mountains, with a Chinese-style shrine in the background. Son Goku (with Nyoi-bō) appears facing the camera. Dragon Balls appear with the 4-star ball pausing by his face before flying off. His design here (and throughout the opening) is the blue gi with red wristbands and white belt as colored by Toriyama in Dragon Ball Chapter 1.

Goku jumps down off of a mountain, spinning the Nyoi-bō over his head as if to attack.
Goku soars on Kintoun over a marshy area with rocky islands jutting out of the water. He then soars into the sky with the camera making a corkscrew behind him. The cloud was first introduced in Dragon Ball Chapter 4 and he flies with a pose first used in that chapter.

Goku appears in rapid-fire kung-fu-style poses against a plain "ripped" background. The final rapid-fire image depicts the one-star ball instead of Goku.
Bulma and Oolong cross a desert on her Capsule 9 motorcycle. Oolong gets handsy and she knocks him off the bike. After a moment, he reappears while running. Bulma is wearing a variant of her outfit from Dragon Ball Chapter 1 (except without the "Bulma" on the front), while Oolong is wearing his Mao suit first introduced in Chapter 6.
