A9 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) arranged by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 2 which was broadcast on 05 March 1986.
Overview
A9 is a Kikuchi arrangement of the opening song "Mystical Adventure!" composed by Takeshi Ike. Kikuchi's arrangement features a banjo melody that gives the piece the feel of the frontier. The full composition is part b of the suite entitled "The Wild Boy", which is track #13 on both the Ongakushū record and disc #2 of the Daizenshuu.
The compilation concept for this track was probably "a day in the life of Goku". Goku, who awakens to the "morning" image bridge F37, leisurely fishes with his tail to the country-style A9 [...] A9 is a distinctive piece that was used time and again in relaxed scenes.
— Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z Daizenshuu (2:13b)
A9 is given the title "Goku Leaves With Umigame" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-34 based on its placement in the series.
Form and Analysis
A9 is an arrangement of the chorus of "Mystical Adventure!" featuring a banjo melody doubled on a xylophone. A bassoon plays the bassline, and violins join later in the piece. Woodblocks are used for percussion, and a clarinet doubles the bassoon in the final bar.
| Part | Bars | Details |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | 4 | chorus part 1 (i—, iv-i) |
| A2 | 4 | chorus part 2 (i—, iv-V) |
| B | 4 | chorus part 3 (VI—v-i, VI-VII-i) |
| C | 4 | coda: final note of chorus + 2 bars pizzicato violins + final bar |
The piece could be notated in swing time but we have notated it in the more explicit 12/8 time. Larger sections are indicated with consecutive rehearsal letters (A, B, C).
