Umigame is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Umigame makes his debut in chapter 3, published in the 1985 #01/02 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump. Umigame is the constant companion of the Turtle Hermit, at Kame House and sometimes beyond.
Name
Umigame's name (海ガメ) is a katakana rendering of the Japanese word for "sea turtle" (海がめ umigame). The kanji 海 (うみ umi) is the Japanese word for "sea".
Umigame is sometimes credited simply as カメ or 亀 (both kame), the Japanese word for "turtle"; by rendaku, kame becomes game in the compound word. He is credited as 海亀 (umigame) in the Dragon Ball 10th Anniversary Movie.
Production

Umigame's story is likely inspired by Urashima Tarō, a popular Japanese folk tale where a young man rescues a turtle and receives a reward. Urashima rides the turtle's back to the Dragon Palace (龍宮城 Ryūgū-jō) under the sea where he is entertained by a princess and her handmaidens. When he leaves, she gives him a box (玉手箱 tamatebako, "jeweled hand box") and warns him never to open it. When Urashima returns home, many years have passed and everyone he knows is gone. He opens the tamatebako, and in a puff of smoke, he becomes an old man.
In Dragon Ball Chapter 3 and its adaptation in Dragon Ball Episode 3, when Umigame leaves Goku and Bulma after promising to return with a gift, Bulma wonders if he will bring them a tamatebako. The Viz manga adaptation and the Funimation English dub both simply have Bulma wondering what sort of gift a turtle could bring.
In the Dragon Ball 10th Anniversary Movie, the story is retold with Oolong already in the group. Oolong presses Umigame to bring them a gift, and when he says he will go fetch one, Oolong wonders if he is going to Dragon Palace, and tells him to give their greetings to the Sea Princess. Bulma tells him they do not need a tamatebako. Clyde Mandelin adapts these as Atlantis, Sea Princess, and Pandora's Box respectively in his subtitles for Funimation; the latter matches his subtitles for episode 3.
Performance
Umigame was voiced by Daisuke Gōri in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Gōri voiced several characters including Mister Satan for the franchise before his death in 2010, but the role of Umigame passed to Takahiro Fujimoto in 2009 even though Gōri continued to voice King Enma and the Ox Demon King in Dragon Ball Kai. Fujimoto voices the role in Kai and Dragon Ball Super.
In the Funimation dub, Turtle is voiced by Christopher Sabat, best known as the voice of Vegeta, Piccolo, and Yamcha. Turtle was voiced by Chris Cason in Dragon Ball Z Kai, but Sabat reclaimed the role in Dragon Ball Super.
Biography
Son Goku Arc

Umigame is first seen looming in darkness at the end of Dragon Ball Chapter 2, and the narration suggests he might be a threat in the next chapter.[1] He appears again in the first panel of the next chapter with similar narration. Goku is impatiently waiting for Bulma to get ready. She is so slow, he wonders if she is a turtle. He decides to go outside and train. He finds a big rock and lifts it, breaking it into pieces. He goes to grab the next big rock the same way, but it turns out to be Umigame. Goku momentarily thinks Bulma really has turned into a turtle; he tells her that this is her fault for being so slow. He is surprised when Bulma peeks out of the capsule house, asking what a sea turtle is doing so far from the sea.
Umigame asks if they have a bucket of salt water, and maybe some seaweed; Bulma remarks on his lack of shame. From somewhere, these items are produced, so he drinks up and thanks them, explaining his story. He was looking for matsutake mushrooms when he got lost, and he has been wandering for nearly a year trying to find his way back to the water. Bulma tells him he is going in the opposite direction of the sea; she consults a map and tells him the sea is 120 kilometers south. Goku asks Umigame if he would like for them to take him to the sea. Umigame is grateful, but Bulma is not happy at all to hear this plan; she only has 30 days left of summer vacation and she does not want to waste time on a turtle. Goku asks her if she would rather waste time on her hair, and she counters that it is not their responsibility; they have their own quest to worry about. Goku says he will just take him alone, then, and Bulma tells him never to show his face again, then.
Umigame apologizes to Goku as they depart, Umigame on Goku's back and Bulma shouting after them. As they leave, Bulma realizes she did not manage to get Goku's Dragon Ball. Then she sees a dinosaur nearby and gets scared, so she decides to catch up with them after all. Soon, they encounter a bear bandit with a taste for sea turtle. Bulma tries to convince Goku to hand over the turtle, but he refuses, telling Umigame to hop off while he fights. Bulma is certain that Goku is going to be defeated; she tells Umigame to hop on her bike; now is their chance to get away. However, Goku easily defeats the bear with his Jan-Ken attack, surprising Bulma. Goku asks Umigame if he really tastes good, but Umigame insists that he does not. Goku did not think he looked yummy.

They arrive at the sea, which Goku has never seen before, and Umigame asks Goku to wait while he brings him something to repay his kindness. He soon returns with the Turtle Hermit on his back.[2] The old man asks if these are the people who helped him, and Umigame clarifies that it was only Goku who helped him. The Turtle Hermit tries to call the Immortal Phoenix, but Umigame reminds him that the phoenix died of food poisoning. Instead, the Turtle Hermit calls Kinto-Un, the flying cloud that only the pure of heart can ride. When the old man tries to demonstrate and falls through the cloud, Umigame is shocked and tries to comfort his master, but then Bulma asks if she can have a gift too. Umigame again insists that she did nothing to help him, but Bulma reminds him that she gave him salt water. The Turtle Hermit agrees to give her a gift in exchange for a look at her panties, and Umigame suggests that this is why he cannot ride Kinto-Un. Meanwhile, Bulma has decided that this is a fair price for a gift, so she decides to flash her panties, but she is not wearing any panties, so both Turtle and Turtle Hermit get more than they had bargained for. Bulma asks for the Three-Star Ball that the Turtle Hermit is wearing around his neck; he gives it to her, and then Umigame carries him back home across the water.[3]
Thereafter, Umigame is almost always present in scenes set at Kame House, a capsule house usually located on a small island where Umigame lives with the Turtle Hermit. He tries and often fails to keep his friend on the straight and narrow.

Goku visits Kame House for the first time with Chi-Chi to ask for the Bashō fan to put out the fire at Frypan Mountain where Chi-Chi lives with her father, the Ox Demon King. Umigame is happy to see Goku again.[4] Chi-Chi does not believe that this old man is really the great Muten Rōshi, so she attacks him to test him. When her blade lodges in the old man's skull, Umigame is distressed for his friend. When they ask for the Bashō fan, the Turtle Hermit agrees to lend it to them, on one condition: Goku has to bring back that busty girl he was with before and let him get a touch. Umigame scolds him for this, and the Turtle Hermit protests that a dying old man should be allowed a souvenir for the underworld. Umigame reminds him that he drank the Elixir of Life. When Goku agrees to subject Bulma to this lechery, the old man goes inside to find the Bashō fan. He asks Umigame where it might be, and Umigame reminds him that he had been using it as a potholder. The Turtle Hermit remembers that he spilled wonton soup on it and had to throw it away. He decides to go to put out the fire personally, telling Umigame to keep an eye on the island while he is gone. Umigame tells him to behave himself.[5]
After Goku's first adventure with the Dragon Balls concludes, he returns to Kame House to seek training from the Turtle Hermit. He immediately sets Goku the task of finding him a girl. Umigame is on vacation so he can live free! Soon after, Kuririn arrives to ask for training as well; the Turtle Hermit panics when he approaches, thinking it is Umigame.[6] The next day, the old man takes the boys to a larger island to train.[7] Umigame never joins them on the training island; he is not seen again until after the 21st Tenka'ichi Budōkai.
Red Ribbon Army Arc
Goku and Bulma go to Kame House to borrow a submarine while they race the Red Ribbon Army for the Dragon Balls. Goku greets "Urigome" (a type of non-sticky rice), and Umigame politely corrects him. He tells the Turtle Hermit that Goku has arrived, and after the old man trades the submarine for Bulma's shrinking device, Umigame gives her directions to the bathroom. The Turtle Hermit announces that he is going inside to watch TV, but instead he spies on Bulma in the bathroom. When he accidentally gets flushed down the toilet and crawls out the sewer, Umigame wonders aloud why he is outside all wet rather than inside. When Goku and Bulma depart with Kuririn, Umigame tells them to be careful, and he wonders what the old man is up to when he asks Lunch when she might go to the bathroom. Meanwhile, a soldier scouts the island and reports the presence of an old man, a woman, and a turtle to General Blue.[8]

General Blue sends "Company B" to attack the island, thinking Kame House is some kind of headquarters, and Umigame is the first to see them approaching.[9] The Turtle Hermit quickly dispatches the soldiers, but the last one holds a gun to Lunch's head in desperation. Umigame tickles her nose until she sneezes and transforms into Bad Lunch, who can defend herself. She is so aggressive, Umigame wonders if the Red Ribbon guys might be better.[10] When Bulma and the others return, she gives the Turtle Hermit a giant diamond to make up for having lost his submarine. The diamond is probably worth a few billion Zenni, much more than the submarine, and the old man starts fantasizing about having strippers every day, so Umigame offers to hold on to the diamond for safekeeping. The Turtle Hermit is offended that Umigame does not trust him, but then Lunch steals the diamond at gunpoint, flying away. The Turtle Hermit is not worried; once she sneezes, she will bring it back. Then General Blue arrives, sneaking up on them. Bulma wonders how she will get home now, and Umigame offers to carry her on his back. Then Blue uses telekinesis to tie everyone up while he steals the Dragon Balls. He leaves a timed bomb behind to kill them, but Lunch returns just in time to save everyone. She unties Goku, who throws the bomb into the sky just before it explodes.[11]
Bulma does not take Umigame up on his offer to carry her home. Instead she decides to build a surveillance drone to find Goku using Dragon Radar technology. When she gets it working, Umigame is happy to see that Goku is still alive. Lunch suspects Goku is headed for the Red Ribbon Army headquarters. They confirm this with the surveillance drone, which is then destroyed by the fortress sentries. Bulma and the Turtle Hermit decide to go help Goku, but Umigame wants to know how they plan to get there. Bulma wishes she could contact Yamcha, but Umigame reminds her that she just built a surveillance drone with junk parts; surely she can build a phone. Bulma thanks and praises Umigame for his insight and then builds the phone, calling Yamcha.[12]

When Yamcha arrives, he insists that everyone come along. Bulma and Oolong grumble about it, but Yamcha says they will need everyone they can get, and reminds them that Goku has saved all of their lives at least once. Umigame asks Yamcha if he can help, leaving Yamcha speechless, but then he asks about Kuririn. It turns out he went swimming to buy groceries; they have to pick him up in the ocean on the way.[13] When they arrive, everyone including Umigame gets off the plane, and they try to come up with a strategy. The Turtle Hermit suggests that Bulma distract the soldiers by taking off her clothes, which makes her angry, but then Kuririn spots something coming toward them. Pu'er rushes to put their airplane back in its capsule, but it turns out to be Goku, who was just wondering how to get back to Kame House so Bulma could fix his Dragon Radar. He informs them that he defeated the entire Red Ribbon Army, and then he follows them on Kinto-Un to Kame House, where Bulma discovers that his radar is not broken. The Turtle Hermit suggests they ask the Fortuneteller Crone where the last Dragon Ball can be found, so Yamcha takes Goku, Kuririn, and Pu'er to see her, leaving Umigame and the others behind.[14] Later, Goku comes to fetch Bulma and the Turtle Hermit, leaving Umigame alone with Lunch and Oolong.[15] After Goku gets the last Dragon Ball, the Turtle Hermit tells him to go into the world without Kinto-Un and train himself, while Yamcha and Kuririn return to Kame House to train, with Bulma and Pu'er tagging along.[16]
22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai Arc

Three years later, Umigame accompanies the Turtle Hermit to the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. On the airplane, Bad Lunch is in the mood to hijack the plane, but Umigame asks her to please contain herself. When they land, the Turtle Hermit has to go find a bathroom. He returns, and then makes an excuse to go to the bathroom again so that he can enter the name Jackie Chun. When he comes back again, Umigame remarks on his problem with soft stools, but the Turtle Hermit insists he only had to pee. With only one minute left before registration closes, Umigame worries that Goku is not there yet, but then he arrives on foot. The Turtle Hermit asks what happened to Kinto-Un, and Goku reminds him that he was the one who told him not to use it. While Goku, Kuririn, and Yamcha go to the contestant area, the Turtle Hermit stands on Umigame's head to wish his students luck. Then he sneaks away to join them as Jackie Chun.[17] After the preliminaries are over, Umigame and the others wonder where the Turtle Hermit has been, but then he appears in his usual dress and tells them he snuck in to watch his students in the preliminary matches. Lunch uses her gun to bully their way into good seats.[18] From the front row, they are left to wonder where he has disappeared to again, and Lunch has returned to her normal form.[19]
Umigame sits to Oolong's left during the tournament and he is usually cut out of sideline scenes, but when Jackie Chun fights Man-Wolf, Umigame remarks to Oolong that Chun is very reminiscent of the Turtle Hermit, which Oolong had apparently not considered.[20] When Goku fights Kuririn, Umigame wishes both of them luck.[21] When Tenshinhan is preparing to use the Kikōhō against Goku, Umigame worries what kind of move it will be.[22] After the tournament, Umigame joins everyone else as they talk about finding something to eat, but then Kuririn is killed.[23]
Demon King Piccolo Arc
After the death of Kuririn, the Turtle Hermit returns to Kame House along with Umigame, Bulma, Lunch, Yamcha, Pu'er, Oolong, Tenshinhan, Chiaotzu, and Kuririn's body, which Bulma is going to preserve in a freezer capsule. They are discussing finding the Dragon Balls to revive Kuririn when the news of Namu's murder comes on the TV. The Demon King Piccolo's spawn Tambourine left a paper with Ma (魔) written on it, just as he left with Kuririn. They have to move from Kame House or they will be found, but Bulma needs a half a day to build a new Dragon Radar. When it is finished, the Turtle Hermit takes Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu to search for the Dragon Balls while Lunch pilots the ship to evacuate everyone else, and Umigame is shocked when she says that they are probably going to need more freezer capsules.[24]
Tenshinhan contacts the relocated Kame House after the first battle to let them know that they failed to collect the Dragon Balls and that Muten Rōshi, Chiaotzu, and even Shenlong were killed. Umigame grieves for his master. Then Earth's King comes on the TV to announce that he has ceded his throne to Demon King Piccolo.[25] Piccolo announces he intends to destroy one region each year on this day, starting with West City, and then Tenshinhan arrives on the scene.[26] Yamcha goes with Lunch and Bulma to help Goku, while Oolong and the others go to find the bodies of Kuririn and the Turtle Hermit at the location Tenshinhan had given them.[27] After the battle, everyone reunites at Kame House in its usual location. When Goku goes there to retrieve his Nyoi-Bō, Umigame and the others are happy to see him, but confused when he tells them he is going to see God before departing in a rush.[28] When God revives, Umigame is present when they summon him, and all those Piccolo killed are returned to life. Umigame is happy to see his friends alive again.[29] He does not accompany the Turtle Hermit to the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai three years later, so he is not seen again until Goku visits Kame House with Gohan five years after that.
Saiyan Arc
Bulma arrives at Kame House in a Capsule Corp 87 helicopter. The Turtle Hermit, Kuririn, and Umigame are happy to see her. After handing out gifts, Bulma asks what happened to Lunch, and Kuririn explains she went chasing after Tenshinhan five years ago. Then Goku arrives with Gohan. Everyone is flabbergasted that Goku has a child, but Umigame is just delighted. Then Raditz arrives.[30] Umigame looks on helplessly as Raditz defeats Goku,[31] and when Piccolo appears, he is terrified. When Piccolo leaves with Goku, the Turtle Hermit decides to follow to watch the fight; Bulma and Kuririn go with him, but they leave Umigame at Kame House.[32]
After the fight, Bulma returns to Kame House to work on Raditz's scouter. While she works, everyone else sleeps, Umigame with his head propped on his front legs. Bulma shoots them all up with a gun, telling them that if she cannot sleep, neither can they. She calls the Turtle Hermit "turtle lover", and reads his battle power at 139.[33]
