Synopsis

The basic training finally begins! To start off, Goku and Kuririn are given milk delivery as their early morning training! While carrying boxes full of milk, they must skip and run while zig-zagging around rows of trees!! Furthermore, they must climb stone stairs that rise high into the sky, cross over a valley on a large tree trunk while keeping their balance, traverse through an endless desert and a raging river, and then, they also get chased by huge dinosaurs! Meaning, this was an ultra-hard milk delivery training that defies common sense!![1]

Summary

Prologue

After a bad bout with food poisoning, everyone at Kame House has recovered. Kuririn is sleeping with the Turtle Hermit and kicks him in the face, causing him to wake up grumbling. Goku is sleeping with Lunch, who tucks him in and kisses him on the cheek, giggling at his cuteness. Lunch takes a moment to wonder why her personality changes when she sneezes, then goes back to sleep. Overhead, a shooting star crosses the sky. Then Lunch sneezes.

Part A

At 4:30 a.m., an alarm clock goes off in Kame House. Muten Rōshi cannot believe it is morning already, but he yells at Kuririn to wake up for early-morning training while he begins to get dressed. Kuririn complains about the time, but his master orders him to get up and get ready while he goes to wake Goku. As he climbs the stairs, he regrets Lunch's unusual problem that prevents him from sleeping with her instead of Kuririn. When he approaches the door, he gets the idea to spy on her through the keyhole. He observes her lumps moving around in the bed, suffers from a nosebleed, and karate-chops himself on the neck to shake it off. He opens the door and slowly peeks in, hoping to sneak up beside her and... He takes a moment to be jealous of Goku, but admits to himself that Goku is the only one who should sleep with her, since he has no interest in women. Goku mumbles about food in his sleep, and the old man wonders what Lunch sleeps in. He pulls back the covers, and discovers blonde Lunch!

Goku fells Lunch with a kick.

Backing away quickly, the old man assesses the situation and decides to try to wake Goku quietly. Using a broomstick, he reaches over Lunch to tap Goku on the shoulder. Goku will not wake, so he tries poking him harder, and eventually Goku wakes up, shouting out greetings to the old man, who tries to get him to be quiet. Goku does not get it, though, and he asks what time it is. The old man again warns him to be quiet, but then Lunch wakes up! She looks at Goku, who says hey, and cringes away from him, asking why he is sleeping with her. He tells her that there are not enough futons for them to all sleep separately, but this only seems to make her angrier. She grabs a gun from underneath her pillow, and the Turtle Hermit runs while she opens fire on Goku. He gets hit, and he calls her a jerk (野郎 yarō), but she tells him that is what he gets for getting in her bed. Goku refuses to lose to her, though, so he kicks her, knocking her out cold. He suggests she get some more sleep, and from the bottom drawer of the dresser, the old man admires Goku's lack of restraint with the ladies. He tries to take advantage of Lunch's unconsciousness to poke her boobs, but Goku asks him what he wants so early in the morning. Is it finally time for training?! The old man nervously agrees, and pretends he was testing the direction of the wind with his finger. Goku is confused, but his master tells him to hurry up and change clothes.

Outside, the Turtle Hermit tells his students they are ready to begin training in the Eternal Turtle Hermit School of Martial Arts. Goku is excited, but his master has a few words of preamble to give them: they are not training to win fights or impress girls. Kuririn nods in understanding, while Goku stares blankly in confusion. He continues: they will grow healthier in body and mind, and in so doing they can live their lives more enjoyably, to the fullest extent, and if some enemy uses their power to threaten them or innocent people, they will be able to punch said enemy in the mouth. He asks if they are following; Kuririn confirms, but Goku says he does not get it at all. The master rephrases: they will train as hard as they can, and have a fun life. Goku gets it! Kuririn thinks he is a moron.

The Milkman is probably selling his wife's milk.

Muten Rōshi asks them if they are ready to begin training, and they both enthusiastically confirm. He turns his back on them, telling them that if they cannot keep up, his feelings will not be hurt if they drop out. They confirm that they understand, and he tells them to follow him for some light running. He takes off, and they follow. As they run, Kuririn thinks to himself that this training is not as hard as he expected from the great Muten Rōshi. Then they arrive at a house with "Milk" written on the side, where a cow-person is stacking milk in the doorway. The Turtle Hermit bids him good morning, telling the Milkman he is the one who called yesterday. The Milkman thanks him for doing this, showing him a map of the delivery route. Kuririn is confused about the nature of their early morning training, and Goku wonders whether they will get to drink their fill of milk. Muten Rōshi instructs them to each take a crate of milk bottles for delivery. Kuririn is incredulous that this is their training, but Rōshi tells them it will be good exercise. The Milkman cannot believe they are going to deliver on foot, and asks if they would not like to use the helicopter, but Rōshi tells him that would not be training. The Milkman worries whether they will be able to get it all delivered by breakfast time, but Rōshi gives his word, and tells the boys to get started. They pick up the crates, and Kuririn asks whether this is really training, but Rōshi insists that it is. He consults the map, and tells the boys to follow him. For the first two kilometers to the first house, they will skip.

Kuririn tries to skip the zig-zagging.

Singing "Skip, skip, la-la-la," they skip to the first house. Goku is having fun, but Kuririn is already lagging behind. They each place a bottle in a house's milk box and take the empty bottles. Rōshi consults the map again, and tells them that for the next kilometer... Kuririn cannot believe they are not done yet, and Rōshi becomes angry with him. Of course they are not done. Even Goku feels chastised, though he did not complain. Rōshi points at a tree-lined path and tells them they will zig-zag down this road. Kuririn is perturbed, and Goku is confused, but Rōshi tells them to go, so they follow, zig-zagging through the trees. When Kuririn falls behind again, he gets an idea. He goes straight forward down the path, singing zig-zag, and does not notice Muten Rōshi jogging in place, waiting for him. Rōshi reminds him that he does not care if Kuririn wants to quit. Apologizing, Kuririn runs back to the place where he started cheating to zig-zag through the trees, and his master laughs.

Part B

Goku begins to struggle.

Goku delivers another milk bottle at a house with "W・13" on the door while Muten Rōshi looks on. Kuririn catches up, and Rōshi chides him for being late and reminds him that the milk will go sour if they are not fast enough. Kuririn apologizes and collapses, resting on top of his milk crate, but Muten Rōshi yells at him and tells him to get up, so he and Goku both come to attention. Rōshi points at some stairs behind him; they are going to climb, but they do not have to run up the stairs. He begins the ascent, and Goku and Kuririn move to follow him, but then Kuririn looks up and yells when he sees how high they have to climb. But he climbs, acknowledging that Muten Rōshi's training is difficult after all. Even Goku begins to struggle, but he steels himself and continues climbing.

Muten Rōshi stops on a landing, smoking a pipe while he waits for his students. Goku arrives first, and he is surprised to see that even Goku is starting to get tired. Goku asks if he can use Kinto'un to deliver the rest of the milk, and Rōshi reminds him that would not be good training. Then he tells Goku that his Grandpa Gohan and the Ox Demon King delivered milk like this back when they were his students. Goku is excited to hear that his Grandpa did this too. He looks at his two remaining milk bottles, and tells the old man he is going ahead. As he starts climbing the next set of stairs, Muten Rōshi sees that Kuririn has finally arrived on the landing. He tells Kuririn that he is halfway there, but Kuririn is not happy to hear this at all. He continues up the stairs with noticeably more difficulty than Goku, but Goku is struggling for breath when he holds open the milk box for Kuririn to place the bottle inside.

The temple at the top of the mountain where the Head Monk lives.

A man emerges from the small temple at the top of the rock formation and thanks the boys for a job well done. Goku yells "Heya!" (おっす ossu) and Rōshi bops him on the head with his club, telling him to say "Good morning" (おはようございます ohayo gozaimasu) instead. Goku bows and sullenly delivers this polite greeting while Kuririn laughs at him. The man greets Muten Rōshi, telling him it has been a long time. Rōshi addresses him as "Head Monk" (和尚 oshō), agreeing it has been a while. The Head Monk tells him he seems well and asks him how the training is going; Rōshi says they have just started, but they both seem promising. Goku and Kuririn celebrate this assessment, and Rōshi tells the Head Monk that if they both train hard, they might be able to enter the Tenka'ichi Budōkai in eight months.

The Head Monk seems impressed, and Kuririn is astounded. Goku has never heard of this Tenka'ichi Budōkai, and Kuririn cannot believe it. It is a tournament where all the martial arts masters of the world gather (budōkai) to see who is "first under the heavens" (tenka'ichi). It is held in South City once every five years, and only eight people are allowed to enter, and the last time, there were over a hundred masters of the art who competed for those spots in the preliminaries. Goku is excited, and Kuririn asks if they can really enter, so the old man promises to enter them if they do not neglect their training, and the Head Monk thinks they will look forward to it. Goku and Kuririn celebrate again, but Rōshi warns them that their objective is not to become Tenka'ichi; real life is not that easy. He only wants them to use the goal of entering the tournament to push themselves in their training. Goku asks Kuririn is there will be lots of strong guys there. Meanwhile, Muten Rōshi tells the Head Monk that they still have some milk deliveries to make, so they will be leaving. He wishes them good luck.

Yamcha at the Sangoku'ichi Dojo.

Meanwhile, in West City, at the Sangoku'ichi Dōjō, Yamcha is dominating the competition with is Roga fufu ken. Outside, Bulma watches through a window with Oolong and Pu'er. The last challenger is a very large man. As they fight, the man says that for someone who boasted he could overthrow the Dōjō, he is not that great. Bulma is worried for Yamcha, and Oolong thinks that Yamcha is not that skilled; he just has a big mouth, and now his opponent is angry at him. Bulma tells Pu'er they should do something, but Pu'er has faith in Yamcha; he really is strong. Yamcha tells his opponent he will just have to use his Roga fufu ken; the large man tries to attack, but Yamcha dodges and delivers a knockout blow. His friends cheer outside, and Pu'er thinks Yamcha will win the Tenka'ichi Budōkai. Bulma reminds him that Goku might be entering as well; Oolong tells Pu'er that Goku is really strong, but Pu'er insists that Yamcha is stronger. Inside, Yamcha is frustrated because he knows the fighters at the Tenka'ichi Budōkai will be even stronger. He speaks to Goku (who is not there), hoping that he will come and promising that he is getting stronger, and Bulma is smitten.

Back on the island, Muten Rōshi leads Kuririn and Goku across a deep ravine, teaching them to balance using a log as a bridge. Kuririn makes the mistake of looking down, and gets scared, but Rōshi tells them to keep going, and Goku warns Kuririn not to look down, or he will fall. Kuririn does not want to die before he can enter the Tenka'ichi Budōkai. Rōshi sings "balance, balance", leading them onward and then into a desert, warning them that they will be swallowed by the sand if they walk too slowly. Goku struggles for breath; Kuririn has it even worse, but he mutters Tenka'ichi Budōkai to himself over and over again to try to keep going. They cross a river near a waterfall, and Rōshi warns them not to get swept away. Goku thinks to himself about all the awesome guys who will be at the Tenka'ichi Budōkai, while Kuririn tells himself not to get swept away, just before he nearly gets swept away. They run down a path with a dinosaur in pursuit; Rōshi warns them not to get eaten.

Back at Kame House, the boys rest at last, struggling to catch their breath. Rōshi tells them they will deliver milk every day for the next eight months for their early morning training. Next up is their morning training! Goku and Kuririn become alarmed. The Turtle Hermit's training is hard, but these two are going to work hard for the Tenka'ichi Budōkai!
