G12 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 2 which was broadcast on 05 March 1986.

Overview

G12 is a piece composed of two contrasting sections (called A and B on this page) that are never used together in the anime. The full composition is part c of the suite entitled "The Wild Boy", which is track #13 on both the Ongakushū record and disc #2 of the Daizenshuu.

[...] G12 was also used frequently, being played when encountering some kind of trouble.[a]
Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z Daizenshuu (2:13c)

The A part of G12 is given the title "Mai's News Of The Valley" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions. At some point, kenisu separated out the B part (bars 8-9) as a distinct piece, calling it "Big, Fat Uh-Oh!".[b]

G12 was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-28 based on its placement in the series.

Form and Analysis

G12 is in 4 at about 60 beats per minute. The piece is relatively unstructured but can be divided into two main sections.

Part Bars Details
A 7 guitar melody with violin response (i-iv-vii˚——V)
B 2 horns (iΔ7)

The brass ending (B) is not really a coda; this is the climax of the piece and what the A section builds to. Part A ends on the dominant (V7), itself a resolution of the vii˚ chord sustained from bars 2-5. The dominant then resolves to the tonic, specifically a jazzy minor-major seventh chord (FmΔ7)[c] with the trumpet performing a lip trill.

Usage and Variations

Below is a table of every instance where G12 is used in Dragon Ball. It is not used in Dragon Ball Z. Parts A and B are never used together, so we have provided an extra marking in the duration/variations column to show which is used up-front.

Durations are approximate and do not necessarily include the fade times normally included in the full track's duration.

Notes

  1. The word used here is "accident" (アクシデント akushidento) which is probably used here to mean an unexpected/sudden/abrupt (不意) event. This fits with the usage of Part B.
  2. The structure of the music and the more or less consistent tempo support the Daizenshuu implication that G12 is a single composition with two contrasting sections. This not uncommon even in Kikuchi's works alone. A6 is another example of a work with a drastic mood shift in the final section of the piece. In M18, it is the introduction that provides the contrast in key, style, and instrumentation. Kikuchi was not composing to scene and he would have expected these pieces to be cut up every which way, especially by contrasting sections, and it might just be coincidence that the production team never found an opportunity to use the entirety of G12.
  3. On the 3rd beat of bar 8, there is an instrument playing a C (the 5th of the chord) but we cannot determine what instrument it is. It is written on the violin line in the score. It might even be a violin!
