"Goku's Great Transformation" is the thirteenth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 21 May 1986, receiving a ratings share of 24.0%. The episode was written by Keiji Terui and directed by Yutaka Satō.

Synopsis

Goku and the others have been captured once again by Pilaf. Having looked at the full moon, which was out that night, Goku suddenly starts going berserk and transforms into a Great Ape!! He destroys the prison he and the others were locked up in and Yamcha and the rest manage to escape, but, having lost all reason, Goku continues his rampage!! Yamcha then cuts off Goku's weakness, his tail! When Goku wakes up after having returned to normal, the group promises to reunite and the Dragon Team splits up.

Summary

Part A

Goku has transformed into a Great Ape and he seems bent on the mindless destruction of Pilaf's Castle. Yamcha points out that Goku has at least managed to destroy their prison, so now they can escape. He tries to get through to Goku and tell him he can turn back to normal now, but Goku cannot understand him. In his bed, Pilaf wakes and complains about the noise. He tells Mai and Shuu to make them be quiet, but then Great Ape Goku breaks into their bedroom, making them scream. Pilaf has pulled the covers over his head, and tells them to be quiet so he can sleep. Mai yells at him to wake him up, and he finally sees the Great Ape, screaming. Goku knocks down their wall, and Pilaf screams at Mai and Shuu to get rid of this beast. However, they find themselves short of appropriate weapons, and their slippers, pillows, bottles, and lamps do not faze the beast.

Meanwhile, Yamcha has climbed out of their prison cell, and he encourages everyone else to follow him. Bulma tries to climb out, and asks Yamcha to give her a hand. He hesitates, still afraid of girls, but Oolong uses his head to propel her out of the cell, and Pu'er climbs out behind him. The Pilaf Gang runs toward their airplane, and Mai climbs in the cockpit to get it started. Pilaf yells at her to hurry, but something is wrong with the engine. Pilaf continues to yell while the Great Ape rages above their heads, and eventually, Mai gets the engine started. They barely escape while Goku continues to destroy the castle.

Bulma and the others try to dodge as Goku rains down destruction on their heads. Bulma falls with an injured leg, so Oolong tries to help her get up. He yells at Yamcha to help, but Yamcha still cannot get over his fear of girls. As Goku closes in on them, Oolong berates him one more time, so Yamcha steels himself and grabs Bulma and Oolong, making a run for it. The Pilaf plane flies past Goku, who is still systematically destroying the castle, and Pilaf grows angry, thinking about the years of blood and sweat that went into building the castle. He orders Mai to turn around and attack. Shuu and Mai try to remind him that they barely managed to escape, but he tells them to obey his orders.

The Pilaf Gang does not attack Great Ape Goku in the manga.

Yamcha pauses for a breather, celebrating their escape, and Bulma asks him to let her go. He remembers his fear of girls and throws her some distance away, while she blushes. Yamcha realizes that he held a girl and escaped unharmed. Meanwhile, the Pilaf plane begins to attack Goku, and his friends are concerned for his safety. Oolong wonders if he will be able to endure this kind of attack, while Pilaf orders Mai to continue her fire. Bulma is worried, but Goku grows angry and turns his attention to the plane. Pilaf asks Mai if she can still handle the angry beast, but she tells him her efforts do not seem to have any effect on him. Pilaf orders her to launch the Special Pilaf Missile. Mai aims the missile and fires. The missile knocks Goku down, and Pilaf gloats from the plane. Bulma and Pu'er worry that Goku might be dead.

The Pilaf Gang lands to inspect the fallen beast, and Pilaf gloats again. Shuu asks where the beast came from, but Pilaf does not know; all he knows is that he was greater than this monster. Pilaf gets angry about his destroyed castle again and starts kicking the fallen beast, jumping on his tail. Goku starts to twitch, and the underlings scream; Mai tries to get Pilaf's attention, and then Goku sits up and growls. The Pilaf Gang runs for their lives, but Bulma is happy to see that Goku is still okay. As the airplane takes off again, Goku grabs one of the broken castle towers and throws it, bringing the plane down. Then the tower falls toward Goku's friends, who run to escape it. The Pilaf Gang has survived their plane crash, and now Pilaf wonders what that monster was.

Yamcha, Oolong, and Pu'er have barely escaped the fallen tower; Oolong curses Goku, and Yamcha watches him continue to destroy the castle. He tells the others they should get further away from Goku; they cannot get through to him when he is in this state. Oolong dusts off his pants and encourages everyone to hurry, but Bulma yells at them to wait. She is trapped underneath the broken tower. Yamcha looks back in surprise, and then rushes to help her. He is unable to lift the tower off her, but then Goku starts running in their direction, so the others add their efforts to Yamcha's. When Goku gets closer, Oolong panics and Yamcha is left to struggle on his own. With Herculean effort, he finally manages to lift the tower, so Oolong and Pu'er help Bulma crawl out, but they are not quite in time. As they run away, Goku catches Bulma and threatens to eat her.

Part B

Goku does not try to eat Bulma in the manga.

Great Ape Goku holds Bulma in his fingers. Yamcha asks the others what they should do, and Pu'er reminds him that Goku's weakness is his tail. Yamcha uses Rōga Fū-Fū Ken to fashion a sword for himself out of the fallen tower, while Goku licks Bulma's face. The sword breaks on Goku's tail, so Yamcha tries grabbing it. Goku tries to shake him off, but Oolong and Pu'er join his efforts, and together they manage to drain Goku's strength. Yamcha tells Pu'er to hurry and transform into a pair of scissors and cut off his tail, so Pu'er does, so Yamcha and Oolong fall to the ground with the severed tail. Goku screams, and drops Bulma as he slowly transforms back into a boy. Oolong is left holding a normal-sized tail.

Goku is fast asleep. Pilaf is watching nearby, and realizes that Goku was the one who was behind all this. Shuu says that they should have taken care of them last night, and Mai laments that the castle is destroyed beyond repair. They will have to rebuild from the ground up. Pilaf cries again about the years it took to build the castle, and then he sees two guns lying nearby. He hands them to Shuu and Mai, telling them that the others think the danger is past, and the monster boy is exhausted, so now is their chance to attack. Shuu asks whether they should kill them, and Mai seems confident now that they no longer have to face a monster. Pilaf orders the charge, and they all run...until Shuu and Mai realize Pilaf is running in the opposite direction. Pilaf tells them he is not running away; he is just leaving the task to them, because he does not want anything to do with those people anymore. They look at each other, and then run after Pilaf.

The next morning, Goku still sleeps while the others watch over him. Oolong cannot believe they almost died because of this kid, but Yamcha reminds him that they have Goku to thank for still being alive. Bulma thinks it would be a bad idea to tell Goku that he was the one who killed his Grandpa, remembering what he told them before he transformed. She still cannot believe it is true. Oolong asks what Goku is, exactly, and wonders whether he might be an alien. Yamcha is just happy that Goku cannot transform anymore with his tail cut off, and Oolong agrees. Bulma remarks that he looks downright cute when he is sleeping.

Goku rolls over and wakes up, startling everyone, but Oolong tells him good morning, and Goku happily returns the greeting. He laughs, and Oolong asks him what is so funny, but then he stands up and the shirt that was covering him falls to the ground. Goku asks why he is naked. Yamcha asks him if he remembers anything, but he does not know what Yamcha is talking about. Bulma tells Oolong to give Goku the panties, but Oolong does not want to part with his gift from Shenlong. Bulma insists, so Oolong offers Goku his own pants. Goku thinks Oolong has short legs, but Oolong tells him to stop complaining; the pants fit well enough.

Goku cannot keep his balance without his tail.

Suddenly, Goku loses his balance, falling over backwards. Oolong asks what is wrong, and Goku says he cannot stand up right. Yamcha tells him that losing his tail must have affected his balance, and that he will get used to it. Goku did not know that his tail was gone; he looks around and feels where it should be, but it is not there! Goku throws a little tantrum, angrily demanding to know what happened to his tail, and then he says, "Oh well." Everyone falls over, and then Oolong observes that nothing really bothers Goku much. Goku says he does not care about his tail, but has anyone seen his Nyoi-bō? Yamcha tells him it is probably in the ruined castle. Goku runs to go get his Grandpa's staff, but he keeps tripping and falling.

Oolong asks what they should do, since they cannot look for the Dragon Balls for another year. Do they go their separate ways? Bulma agrees that would be best, and Yamcha wakes Pu'er. Bulma regrets again that she will have to wait another year for her handsome boyfriend. Yamcha again regrets that he will have to wait another year to stop being afraid of girls, and he wonders if he will ever get married. Then Bulma and Yamcha both seem to get an idea at the same time.

Goku returns with his Nyoi-bō, falling over again while Oolong glares at Bulma and Yamcha. Goku asks him what is wrong, and he points to where Bulma and Yamcha are dancing together with Pu'er. Goku is just confused, and thinks they are weird. Yamcha accidentally hits Bulma's wounded leg with his foot, so he kneels down to inspect it for her. Bulma puts her hand on his shoulder and assures him that she is fine. She smiles down at him, and he smiles up at her. Oolong is disgusted.

Just then, Bulma notices that Goku has returned, so she tells him that they have decided to go to the city together, and invites him to join them. Bulma thinks he would be popular with the girls since he is so cute, but Goku wants to go train with the Turtle Hermit to get even stronger. Bulma seems to think he is strong enough already, but Goku points out that some dude smashed up the castle, and he was barely able to poke a hole in it, so he needs to get stronger. Oolong starts to tell him that it was actually him who smashed up the castle, but Pu'er stops him before he says too much. Bulma asks Oolong what he wants to do, and he asks if there are a lot of girls in the city. Bulma says there are, but he is a hateful pervert so they probably would not like him. He says he does not need to hear that from her. He agrees to come with them, though, which seems to make Pu'er happy.

Goku parts ways with his friends.

Goku suggests they all meet up again in a year to gather the Dragon Balls, but Bulma and Yamcha are still tickled that they no longer need them. Goku asks how he is supposed to look for his Grandpa's ball, so Bulma gives him the Dragon Radar and tells him to check it in a year, and Goku thanks her. Yamcha pulls out a capsule with a small plane, and then shakes hands with Goku, wishing him luck in his training with Muten Rōshi. Bulma says they should all meet again some time, and Goku agrees. He calls Kinto'un, hopping aboard and telling it to take him to the old man's place. Oolong wishes him well, and then everyone takes off to go their separate ways. As he flies away, Goku is excited that the world is full of all kinds of people. The narrator thanks everyone for watching all the way to the end, and then says he is just kidding: there is much more to come! Goku is headed to the Turtle Hermit's place, and his intense training starts next week!

Funimation's 1995 dub was contracted out to BLT Productions in Vancouver, who hired Canadian voice actors typically associated with Ocean Group. Funimation redubbed the series in the early 2000s with their in-house cast.
