I21 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 2 which was broadcast on 05 March 1986.
Overview
Almost the entirety of I21 is set in a V tonality, the dominant of F Minor. The major third of the dominant (E) is by far the most prominent tone in the piece but it never fully resolves to F. This piece is therefore often used to build tension, and typically followed by a piece in F Minor in the anime. The full composition is part d of the suite entitled "A Demon Rears Its Head", which is track #08 on both the Ongakushū record and disc #2 of the Daizenshuu.

I21 is given the title "Hopeless Encounter" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-29 based on its placement in the series.
