Dragon Valley is an original setting created by Toei Animation for Dragon Ball Episode 2. The valley is a deep, narrow ravine about 100 kilometers north of Pilaf's Castle.[1]
General Overview
In the Dragon Ball manga, Son Goku returns to Bulma's capsule house with a wolf and a centipede for their dinner, but his hunting happened off-screen.[2] In the anime, this is expanded into an encounter with the Pilaf Gang subordinates, Mai and Shuu. They are searching for a Dragon Ball, chasing rumors Mai has heard about a strange glow that is often seen in the valley at night. Mai has heard that no one has returned from the valley alive. When they arrive, they find only wolves whose eyes glow in the dark, and a hungry Goku. He mistakes their airplane for a bird and attacks it as they try to escape. Then he returns to Bulma with a wolf and a centipede.[1]
Name
龍ヶ谷 (ryūgadani) translates literally to "Dragon Valley". 龍 (りゅう ryū) is "dragon"; ヶ (a small ケ ke) functions as a possessive particle in compound proper names and should be read as が (ga); 谷 (たに tani) means "valley" and by rendaku becomes だに (dani) in the back end of this compound word.
Music
Four compositions and arrangements by Shunsuke Kikuchi debut in association with Dragon Valley:
- G12 debuts when Mai tells Pilaf about the rumors surrounding Dragon Valley. Her tale is accompanied by scenery of the valley shrouded in darkness, with the mysterious glowing that Mai had heard about in rumors.
- I21 debuts when Mai and Shuu land in Dragon Valley. They immediately discover the skeletons of dozens of creatures, and then they see the infamous glow. The music cuts off when Goku drops in.
- I22 debuts when the wolves attack. Mai and Shuu flee, while Goku sets about conquering his dinner.
- A7 debuts when Goku sees the giant bird escaping. He claimed that bird for his dinner, so he uses Nyoi-bō to propel himself upward, shaking off the dogpile of wolves as he goes, and eventually knocking the airplane out of the sky. The music ends as his kick lands.
