- This article is about the 2004 uncut, bilingual Australian DVD release of the original Dragon Ball television series' first thirteen episodes and edited English dub of its first movie. For the 2000 two-disc DVD release of the 1995 "season one" syndication broadcast version of these same contents produced by FUNimation, see Dragon Ball: The Saga of Goku.
"The Saga of Goku" is the Australian release of Funimation's 2001 English dub of the first thirteen episodes of Dragon Ball featuring their new in-house cast. The DVD was released in Australia on 10 March 2004.
Due to contractual obligations to Trimark, neither the new, 2001 dub nor the English subtitles by Clyde Mandelin were available for purchase in North America until the "Blue Brick" release of Dragon Ball Season One on 15 September 2009. "The Saga of Goku" as it was released in North America only included an edited version of the first thirteen episodes and the edited version of Dragon Ball Movie 1, both dubbed by a Canadian voice cast through BLT Productions in 1995.
Summary
This plot summary is given on the DVD cover:
Deep within the heart of a raging fire at the Earth's core dwells the Eternal Dragon, a magical beast of limitless power. Scattered over the face of the Earth, are seven magic Dragon Balls. When these Dragon Balls are united, the Eternal Dragon will appear before the adventurer who brought them together and grand that person a single wish. Then, once more the balls will be scattered to the four winds, and the dragon beast will return to his fiery lair until another brave or foolish soul rediscovers the balls and tries to bring them together again.
Now meet Goku... a brave, innocent young boy with incredible powers, who is plunged into a mystical adventure in exotic lands. This normal little boy (if you count having a tail as normal, that is) and his collection of screwy friends are looking for the 7 almost mystical Dragon Balls with which one can summon a charmed Dragon who will grant a single wish!

Menu
The main menu of both discs features the background music (BGM) track A-1, an instrumental arrangement of "Mystical Adventure" over the song's karaoke track. None of the other menu screens have music or animated parts.
On the main menu screens, Bulma stands behind a graphic of the turtle (亀 kame) symbol on the right, and Goku is pictured mid-attack on the left. Behind these static images of Bulma and Goku, a short montage of animation plays on three separate screens that all begin the same montage at different times: two divided triptych screens behind Bulma, and a transparent full-screen video on top of most of the static elements of the menu.
On Disc 1, the montage begins in the upper triptych with Goku rolling on the log in episode 1, then skips to the end of the episode where Goku rescues Bulma from the Pteranodon. Then it's on to the scene from episode 2 where Goku fights off wolves and brings down Mai and Shuu's airplane, followed by Goku's first spin on the "Flying Nimbus" as Bulma, the Turtle Hermit, and the Turtle watch from the island in episode 3.
On Disc 2, the montage begins in the lower triptych with Muten Rōshi defending against Chi-Chi's attack in episode 8, followed by his arrival at Mount Frypan on Baby Gamera. Next, Goku and Bulma depart Mount Frypan with Oolong; then the montage goes back in time to Goku performing his first Kamehameha on their car.
On the Episodes menus, Goku prepares a Kamehameha behind a turtle symbol. On the Setup menus, Bulma stands behind the turtle symbol. On the Extras menus, Oolong peeks over the turtle symbol, while Bulma looks at a Dragon Ball next to him. The Setup menu and the Character Profiles are the same on both discs; the cursor reveals a silhouette for each character selection option.
Audio and Subtitles
The English dub and Japanese audio on this release are both in stereo; the Japanese is redundant mono.

When subtitles are "on", the subtitle track is the direct translation of the Japanese dialogue by Clyde Mandelin; this can be selected regardless of the audio selection. When subtitles are "off", there is still an active subtitle track with translations of Japanese writing that does not appear in the spoken dialogue like signs, symbols, etc. This is intended to accompany the English dub.

All six of these character profiles are included on both discs.
Taught martial arts by his adoptive grandfather Gohan, who raised him out in the wilderness, Goku is very strong, agile and fearless. He'll take on any fight, no matter what the odds are, if he thinks that someone has been wronged.
Bulma is one independent and determined teen. She'll do whatever it takes to get what she wants and won't let anything stand in her way - not mountains, monsters, or pride. Bulma is also a mixed up teen with a quirk that won't allow her to shut-up. She's a mechanical genius who can operate and fix anything.
An ancient and wise master of martial arts, Master Roshi has accumulated great power and wisdom. He is very old and hermit-like. Although he may appear quirky, frail and harmless, Master Roshi is indeed a great warrior. He is master of the "Kamehameha", a tremendous attack.
Oolong becomes one of the good guys after a rocky beginning terrorizing a small village. A talented shape-shifter, he can transform himself into a whole assortment of fearsome monsters, regular everyday people, or even very useful things such as motorcycles, boats, and rockets.
Yamchai s a powerful and feared warrior who can call upon the "Wolf-Fang Fist", a move he uses to vanquish his enemies. Initially, Yamcha seems more like a bully than a hero, but he comes around. Although he's incredibly cool and under control, he is preposterously shy around women, especially Bulma.
Puar is a talking blue cat who is fiercely loyal to Yamcha and will do anything for him. He has a quiet, shy personality but is always there for his friends. Puar also went to the same shape-shifting school as Oolong.
