The Dragon Ball Saga Set DVDs are Funimation's first full release of the Dragon Ball TV series. These were primarily released in North America between 28 January 2003 and 28 September 2004.
The Tournament Saga was the first set released in North America (Region 1), as the first thirteen episodes of Dragon Ball were not available subtitled, nor was the 2001 English dub of those episodes. While Funimation's redub of these episodes was broadcast on Cartoon Network less than two years prior, Funimation's contract with Trimark for the release of the 1995 edited dub of those episodes prevented them from releasing the unedited episodes in the United States until the contract expired. However, for Australian audiences (Region 4), Madman Entertainment released their own "Saga of Goku" set in 2004. Due to the release's content (subtitled episodes, Funimation redub) and similarities in packaging/visuals, most fans consider that release the unofficial "first" Saga Set. North American viewers would not get an official release of those subtitled/redubbed episodes until 15 September 2009, included with the Dragon Ball Season DVDs (also known as the "Blue Bricks").
