The "Piccolo Jr. Saga Part One" is the North American release of Funimation's English dub of episodes 123-137 of Dragon Ball.

General Overview

All Saga Set releases feature dual-video track episodes of Dragon Ball with creditless openings and endings. Opening animation Version 1 (of 2) and ending animation Version 2 (of 4) are featured on all 153 episodes. Funimation credits are featured on the English video track's ending animation. All episodes contain original episode titles and alternate English episode titles. All eyecatches are presented correctly. No Next Episode Previews are provided. The English audio is selected by default.

The English audio track features re-recorded covers of the opening and ending songs. Insert song "Muten Rōshi no Oshie" (featured in episode 130) is removed entirely from the English audio track.

Summary

This plot summary is given on the DVD cover:

The epic battle with King Piccolo has left Goku dangling on the edge of destruction. The young hero learns that if he is to ever fully regain his strength he must accept the grueling training of the legendary Kami, Guardian of Earth! Goku is faced with test after grueling test including a dangerous quest for a mystical artifact, and an unbelievable journey back in time. With the World Martial Arts Tournament just around the corner, Goku prepares to do whatever it takes to complete his training. The tournament approaches and this time, there's much more than a championship on the line!

123 Lost and Found With Piccolo's reign of terror at an end, Goku has time to mend his wounds. As he heals he learns that there may be a way to revive his lost friends...a face to face meeting with the creator of the Dragon balls! [sic] The only problem is that the only way to get to the mysterious Kami is by using his Power Pole, and it's gone missing!
124 Temple Above The Clouds Goku finds his lost Power Pole and uses it to climb to Kami's temple in the sky. The only problem is that when he arrives he must face off against Kami's assistant Mr. Popo in a test of strength. Does Goku have what it takes to pass this test and earn a meeting with the mysterious Kami?
125 Earth's Guardian Emerges The moment has arrived for Goku to come face to face with the amazing Kami, Guardian of Earth! But even the wise Korin could not prepare Goku for what he will see when the mysterious Guardian emerges!
126 Eternal Dragon Resurrected After Goku mistakes Kami for the villainous Piccolo it is time for the young warrior to begin his grueling three year training for the next World Martial Arts Tournament. In exchange for Goku's promise Kami agrees to revive the Eternal Dragon!
127 Quicker Than Lightning Goku's first task under his new teacher is a death-defying mission to the top of Mount Rumble to fetch the legendary Sacred Crown. But the mystical artifact has a deadly secret! Goku will have to be quicker than lightning to accomplish this task... alive!
128 Secret of the Woods Continuing his training, Goku follows Popo's instruction and enters the deep, dark woods. While searching for a worthy sparring partner, Goku stumbles across a surprising discovery hidden deep within the secluded labyrinth...and finds help a most unexpected way!
129 The Time Room Goku journeys through time, where he meets a young Master Roshi! But Roshi has a problem of his own...his arch rival, Shen! While the two rivals battle for the affections of the same girl, Goku attempts a new power with the help of Master Mutaito.

130 Goku's Doll "Be careful what you wish for." Goku learns this lesson the hard way when he asks Popo for the ultimate sparring partner to aid in his training. What he gets is the battle of his life! Meanwhile, Yamcha and the others continue their journey to reach Korin's Tower, in hopes of receiving training from the Master.
131 Walking Their Own Ways Preparing for the World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku gets some important training tips from Mr. Popo. Meanwhile, Tien, Yamcha, Chiaotzu, and Krillin make their way to Korin's Tower for some training of their own. Unfortunately they are sidetracked by a village celebrating a mysterious festival.
132 Hotter Than Lava While Goku continues his training, Tien, Yamcha, Chiaotzu and Krillin find themselves in a very hot situation! A remote village is threatened by an erupting volcano and it's up to the good guys to put a lid on it. The time has come to put their new training to the test!
133 Changes Warriors the world over are lining up to compete as the World Martial Arts Tournament prepares to get under way. Unfortunately, all of Master Roshi's pupils are missing, including Goku. With the entry-deadline approaching, the competitive future of our heroes looks bleak, as does Roshi's patience.
134 Prelimenary Peril The World Martial Arts Tournament gets underway as Goku and the others compete in the exciting preliminary round. But the competition threatens to turn ugly when Goku gets a visit from an old adversary.
135 Battle of the Eight The preliminary round continues as Goku, Yamcha, Krillin and Tien battle one opponent after another in hopes of advancing to the semi-final round. Meanwhile, Master Roshi is confronted by an old rival.
136 Tien Shinhan vs. Mercenary Tao The Tournament gets underway as Tien Shinhan battles his former mentor turned cyborg, Mercenary Tao. Tensions run high as the former assassin attempts to take Tien down — permanently!
137 Anonymous Proposal Goku takes on his most lovely opponent yet in the second match of the World Martial Arts Tournament. Known only as Anonymous, the beautiful warrior's identity is as mysterious as her fierce anger toward Goku, who must win the match in order to learn her real name.

The English dub and Japanese audio on this release are both in stereo; the Japanese is redundant mono.

Under "English", when subtitles are "on", the subtitle track is the Closed Captions for the English dub. Under "Japanese", when subtitles are "on", the subtitle track is the direct translation of the Japanese dialogue by Clyde Mandelin. When subtitles are "off", there is still an active subtitle track with translations of Japanese writing that does not appear in the spoken dialogue like signs, symbols, etc. This is intended to accompany the English dub.

Character Profiles

Character profiles are included on both discs; presented exactly as they were written.

Taught martial arts by his adoptive grandfather Gohan, who raised him out in the wilderness, Goku is very strong, agile, and fearless. He'll take on any fight no matter what the odds are if he thinks that someone has been wronged.

Krillin is a young boy who comes into action when he arrives to study martial arts under Master Roshi. Driven to be the best martial arts fighter, Krillin will do whatever it takes to win, even cheat. Krillin tries to keep up with Goku as they become the best of friends and friendly rivals.

Yamcha is a powerful and feared warrior who can call upon the "Wolf-Fang Fist", a move he uses to vanquish his enemies. Initially, Yamcha seems more like a bully than a hero, but he comes around. Although he's incredibly cool, and under control, he is preposterously shy around women, especially Bulma.

The mysterious Korin is the lone resident of the tower that bears his name. Legend says that atop Korin's Tower rests the Sacred Water, a mystical substance that enhances the strength of anyone who drinks it. But Korin does not give up his prize easily. His mind games are enough to thwart the most fervent pursuers.

Mr. Popo is the right hand man of Kami, Guardian of Earth. God natured and fun loving, Popo's skill as a warrior is not to be underestimated. Mr. Popo tells Goku that he must prove his worth by derfeating him to earn the chance to see Kami face to face. THe young warrior soon learns that theree is more to Popo than meets the eye.

After watching King Piccolo's destruction, Tien turns his attention to the World Martial Arts Tournament with the hopes that he will once again face off with Goku. But Tien soon finds himself in a struggle for his very survival when a green faced villain arrives on the scene. Tien fears that Piccolo's plan for total domination might still come to pass!

Chiaotzu is the long time companion of Tien, his former bodyguard. His soft features and child-like exterior hide the awesome power buried beneath. He is capable of destroying much larger opponents with his psychic powers, powers he also uses to communicate telepathically with Tien.

Before Kami took his place as Guardian of Earth, the wise master had to look deep within himself to purge any evil that rested in his heart if he were to ever ascend to the prestigious position. But in ridding himself of his evil counterpart, Piccolo, Kami set into motion a chain of events that would forever change the course of history!

In the waning moments of the battle versus Goku, King Piccolo produced one final offspring and charged him with finishing Goku. The time has come for the son to continue the father's wicked work. With power surpassing that of King Piccolo, Piccolo Jr. is on a collision course with the one person he will do anything to defeat.

As Goku journeys back in time he stumbles into the greatest martial Arts master of the period. In fact, Master Mutaito has two pupils Goku knows very well, Master Roshi and Master Shen! Mutatio agrees to share a bit of his enormous bank of knowledge with the young warrior. But are the Master's techniques too advanced for even Goku?

Mercenary Tao is back...and in a big way! Thanks to some new biotechnology, Tao has entered the World Martial Arts Tournament with terrible new powers! With his targets locked on Master Roshi's young pupils, Tao risks losing everything in hopes of gaining the one thing he never possessed...revenge!

Goku always knew Chi Chi was a firecracker, but when he can't remember his old friend, he finds himself in a tough spot! Chi Chi enters the World Martial Arts Tournament with the hopes of collecting on an old promise made by Goku. The stakes are raised to an incredible level as the young lady faces off with her old friend!
