"Dragon Ball Season One" is Funimation's digitally remastered release of the first thirty-one episodes of Dragon Ball. These "season" sets are colloquially known as the "Blue Bricks", and "Season One" was released in North America on 15 September 2009.

"Season One" is the first North American release to feature Japanese audio and subtitles for the first thirteen episodes, and also the first North American home video release of their in-house English dub for those episodes. Due to contractual obligations to Trimark, these had previously only been released on the Australian version of "The Saga of Goku".

Summary

All discs have the same art.

This plot summary is given on the DVD cover:

The greatest adventure of all time BEGINS NOW!
Goku may be small, but this fearless warrior packs a punch as powerful as any on the planet. Left alone after his grandfather's death, this unusual boy is happy to spend his days hunting and eating and eating some more. But all that changes on the day he meets Bulma - a bossy, blue-haired beauty with boys on the brain. Together, they set out to track down the seven magic Dragon Balls and make the wish that will change their lives forever.

And that's just the beginning! Goku also spends some time on Turtle Island where he and Krillin study martial arts under the legendary Master Roshi. The old hermit may not look like much, but if his new pupils can find him a woman, he'll make sure they're ready to rumble at the upcoming World Martial Arts Tournament!

Menu

The main DVD menus all feature the artwork from the box cover, accompanied by an unreleased background music (BGM) track composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi, numbered K-103 in the Kanzenshuu catalogue. This track is first used in episode 13 when Pilaf takes revenge after Oolong makes his wish.

The episode selection menus feature the same Shenlong artwork with screenshots from each specific disc's episodes. However, the Disc 1 episode screenshots are all from Disc 2, and the Disc 2 menu features the same episode screenshots. This menu is accompanied by the BGM track I1 (K-17), which is part c of track #11 on disc 2 of the Daizenshuu BGM collection. This track is first used in episode 1 when Bulma and Goku set out on their fateful journey on Bulma's capsule bike.

The setup menus feature an instrumental version of the song "Do the Boogaloo" by Jean-Claude Madonne. This is used as stock music for Muten Rōshi's aerobics videos in episode 14 and episode 16.

The extras menu, only found on Disc 5, features the unreleased Kikuchi track K-43. This track is the main Kinto'un theme, used when Goku first rides the "Flying Nimbus" in episode 3.

Audio and Subtitles

The English dub audio is mixed in 5.1 surround sound while the Japanese audio is mono (redundant stereo).

    1. English 5.1 (default)
    2. Japanese Mono

Booklet

Original DVD set booklet (PDF)

In 2011, Funimation discontinued the inclusion of printed booklets within their Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT DVD season sets; PDFs were subsequently made available on official Funimation websites.[1]

Character Profiles

This DVD box originally included a booklet with character profiles; these are included below exactly as they were written. The profiles were accompanied by character art. Yamcha was inexplicably omitted. Funimation no longer includes the booklets with new printings.

Hero Profiles

Goku is a mysterious young boy who loves to eat almost as much as he loves a good adventure! He survives alone in the wilderness thanks to his tremendous strength and his soon-to-be-legendary fighting skills. Goku's prized possessions are his trusty Power Pole and the Four Star Dragon Ball left to him by his beloved grandfather Gohan.

The little warrior's life changes forever when he crosses paths with Bulma on her quest to locate the seven magic Dragon Balls. Unwilling to part with his family heirloom, Goku agrees to accompany Bulma on her journey. Along the way he encounters Master Roshi, who teaches him the secrets of the Kamehameha Wave and the Flying Nimbus - which Goku can control thanks to the purity of his heart.

Should Goku look directly at the full moon, he suddenly takes on the form of a savage giant ape. This is Goku at his most terrifying and barbaric; however, upon returning to normal, he neither recalls the transformation nor the massive destruction he was responsible for during his uncontrollable altered state.

Bulma is a blue-haired chatterbox who's determined to locate the seven magic Dragon Balls and end her romantic woes forever. This girl can't keep her mind off the boys, so unless she finds a keeper before she gets her hands on the seventh ball, she'll be wishing her way to a lifetime of candlelit dinners.

But just because Bulma likes boys, makeup, and bubble baths, doesn't mean she's helpless on an adventure. She's always got a pocket full of techno-gadgets that are handy in a pinch. Her mysterious Dyno Caps can transform into everything from a motorcycle to a motor home, and her Dragon Radar is the quickest way to locate the greatest treasure the world has to offer. She may not be as strong as Goku, but she definitely brings her own skill set to the table.

However, despite being one of the good guys, Bulma isn't above bending the truth to get what she wants. And if that doesn't work, she's always willing to try batting her eyes and flashing a pretty smile.

Master Roshi may look like a harmless old coot, but he's actually a world famous martial arts expert and the teacher of the Ox-King and Gohan. Known as the Turtle Hermit for his solitary existence on Turtle Island, the years have turned Roshi into a lecherous geezer with a weakness for pretty girls.

In order to prepare Goku and Krillin for the World Martial Arts Tournament, Master Roshi builds their strength with a grueling training regimen that includes skipping, carrying heavy turtle shells on their backs, and being chased by man-eating creatures.

Once his pupils are ready for action, Roshi keeps an eye on them by entering the tournament under the name Jackie Chun. His arsenal of attack techniques includes the Kamehameha Wave, the Sleepy Boy Technique, and the Lightning Flash Surprise Attack. Unfortunately, none of these potent moves do much to improve his luck with the ladies.

His showdown with Goku in the final match of the tournament is a fight for the ages.

Krillin is Goku's training partner and rival for the attention of Master Roshi. The little man has street smarts, so he understands things Goku doesn't - like why their master is so obsessed with pretty girls. Although the two warriors initially have an adversarial relationship, they form a strong bond during the course of their grueling training. Krillin is a skilled fighter and a loyal friend.

  • Launch
    • Blonde Personality: Angry, loud, violent, and very dangerous
    • Blue-Haired Personality: Gentle, sweet, and helpful
    • Techniques: Sneezing
    • Dream: The blonde Launch wants lots of loot, but the blue-haired Launch enjoys peace and quiet.
    • First Appeared in: Episode 15
    • Japanese Voice Actor: Mami Koyama
    • American Voice Actor: Meredith McCoy

Launch has the looks that drive Master Roshi crazy, but there's more to this beauty than meets the eye. If her hair is blue, she's sweet and innocent, but every time she sneezes, Launch's locks go blonde and her personality shifts from demure to dangerous. When Roshi sent his pupils to find him a lady friend, he didn't bargain on them bringing back a home-wrecking homemaker who'll pour you a drink before dinner and serve up a hail of bullets for dessert.

  • Ox-King
    • Personality: Generous and kind to his friends - but you don't want to make him angry
    • Techniques: Incredible strength
    • Dream: For his precious daughter, Chi-Chi, to have a happy life
    • First Appeared in: Episode 7
    • Japanese Voice Actor: Daisuke Gouri
    • American Voice Actor: Kyle Hebert

Goku and Bulma got off on the wrong foot with the Ox-King, but it's tough to blame a man his size for anything - let alone being in a bad mood while his castle is engulfed in eternal flames. As it turns out, the Ox-King is a harmless pussycat of a giant who trained with Gohan under Master Roshi. All he really wants is a little help dousing the fire that's destroying his home and a good life for his daughter Chi-Chi.

  • Chi-Chi
    • Personality: Naïve, pure of heart, and boy crazy
    • Techniques: Chi-Chi is one of the strongest women on the planet.
    • Dream: To grow up and marry Goku
    • First Appeared in: Episode 7
    • Japanese Voice Actor: Mayumi Shou
    • American Voice Actor: Laura Bailey

Chi-Chi is the Ox-King's precious daughter. She may look small and harmless, but she is a formidable foe and a force to be reckoned with. Although somewhat naïve, she is also pure of heart - as is evidenced by her ability to ride the Flying Nimbus. Upon their first meeting, Chi-Chi appears to develop a bit of a crush on Goku.

  • Oolong
    • Personality: Perverted, greedy, and sarcastic
    • Techniques: Shape-shifting
    • Dream: To own the world's most comfortable panties
    • First Appeared in: Episode 4
    • Japanese Voice Actor: Naoki Tatsuta
    • American Voice Actor: Brad Jackson

Oolong is a cantankerous, shape-shifting pig who uses his abilities to scare villagers into turning over their women. Despite his intimidating oink, this portly imposter's bite is critically flawed as he can only change forms for five minutes at a time. In their lone battle, Goku makes quick work of Oolong, and Bulma uses a special pill to secure his servitude for the remainder of their journey.

Turtle is the longtime companion or Master Roshi, and he serves as the voice of reason for the old hermit. Roshi looks forward to Turtle's periodic vacations, so he can pursue his romantic endeavors - something Turtle would never allow.

Enemy Profiles

Emperor Pilaf is a diminutive monarch who's obsessed with collecting the Dragon Balls, so he can wish for ultimate power. Although he calls himself an "emperor", it appears that the bumbling duo of Shu and Mai are his only subjects. This little blue power monger is childish, spoiled, and prone to torturing his followers for their failures.

Shu is Emmperor Pilaf's ninja lackey and Mai's partner in crime. Although he is a dog, his mannerisms and behavior are completely human. Shu provides the comic relief for Pilaf's crew of villains, and his ninja skills are a foil for Mai's reliance on more advanced weaponry.

Attractive and intelligent, this henchman of Emperor Pilaf's is always partnered with Shu on missions to recover lost Dragon Balls. Her personality is more serious than that of her comrade, and she utilizes an arsenal of hi-tech gadgetry that inevitably finds some way to backfire.

Other than his impressive hand-to-hand combat sills and his status as a high-ranking official in the Red Ribbon Army, little is known about Colonel Silver. He possesses great physical strength and is savage in his pursuit of the Dragon Balls.

The Red Ribbon Army is a mysterious paramilitary organization in search of the Dragon Balls. They are ruthless by nature and refuse to let anything prevent them from attaining all seven magic balls. The Red Ribbon Army gives the impression of being a far more formidable opponent than Emperor Pilaf.
