"Kame-sen's Method of Inte~nse Training" is the eighteenth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 25 June 1986, receiving a ratings share of 22.8%. The episode was written by Keiji Terui and directed by Yoshihiro Ueda.

Synopsis

With their early morning training over, they continue on to their morning training. In order to strengthen their arms and legs, they train by plowing a field barehanded! Then after breakfast, it's study time!! After lunch, they take an afternoon nap until 1:30. During the afternoon, they help out at a construction site. It's training where they sweat, toughen their muscles, and can even receive a part-time job salary! Furthermore, they undergo some very rough training to toughen their reflexes, swimming ten laps around a lake while being chased by sharks and dodging the frenzied attacks of bees, until they finally end a full day of training!

Summary

Part A

At the Chikurin-ken Dōjō (竹林拳), there is a banner on the wall that says "Aim for the Tenka'ichi Budōkai" (めざせ！天下一武道会 Mezase! Tenka'ichi Budōkai), and several men train inside for the tournament. In a forest, a large man chops down trees as training for the tournament. In a boxing ring, a man does push-ups while another man counts. After 131, the man collapses, and the other man tells him he will be defeated in the preliminaries at this rate, and that he should get up.

Goku and Kuririn are collapsed on their backs, breathing hard after their milk delivery. They are finally done...but Muten Rōshi asks them what they think they are done with. Goku says they are done with today's training, and Kuririn asks if they are going to have to do this every day. Rōshi says that was just their early morning training and yells at them to get up. Now it is time for their morning training: they are going to help plow this field, he says, pointing to a farmer a short distance away. Rōshi runs in that direction to discuss their arrangement while the boys commiserate. The farmer thanks Rōshi, who calls the boys over, telling them that if they do not finish quickly, they will have to skip breakfast. Kuririn complains that they did not have to do this kind of manual labor at Ōrin Temple, but Goku takes off, and Kuririn follows. The farmer sits down and takes advantage of the opportunity for a break.

Goku and Kuririn get to work with hoes, but Muten Rōshi stops them, telling them to put down the tools and plow with their bare hands. The purpose of this training is not so much to toughen their legs, back, and arms, but to toughen their hands. He makes a karate-chop motion to demonstrate, but the boys are incredulous, and Goku looks at one of his hands in confusion. But their master confirms that this is what he requires of them, so they get to work, plowing furrows through the fields with nothing but their hands. Kuririn stops when he realizes that his fingernails are starting to fall off, but Muten Rōshi, smoking a pipe with the farmer, tells him to get back to it; he is falling behind. The farmer is impressed; these kids are like a couple of tractors. Before long, they boys report that they are finished, with Kuririn still complaining about his hands. Rōshi inspects the field, and then tells the boys they took so long that their breakfast will be late, and starting tomorrow, they will be plowing much bigger fields, and they will have to work faster. Goku complains that he is hungry, and Kuririn says he is so hungry he might die.

At Kame House, Lunch is preparing breakfast. She greets the weary boys as they approach, telling them breakfast is ready, and they happily run inside the house. After a moment, Muten Rōshi runs after them. At the table, Lunch says she made plenty, so everyone can eat as much as they like. Goku digs in; Rōshi sedately eats his rice; Lunch sips from a spoon. Kuririn looks around the table, then grabs a pepper shaker and starts applying it liberally to his food. The old man tries to warn him, but it is too late; the pepper cloud has reached Lunch's nose. She sneezes, and then chases all of them out of the house with her machine gun. They run as she continues to shoot, and Rōshi says they will go eat out somewhere. They find a restaurant, and the boys stuff their faces, asking for more. Then Goku sneezes, and Muten Rōshi and Kuririn run to cower in a corner. After a moment, they realize that Goku is not Lunch, and they are embarrassed.

こくご (国語 kokugo) is what Japanese language classes are called in Japan ("national language").

After breakfast, Muten Rōshi sets up a chalkboard while Goku holds a pile of books and a pencil. He tells them they will have study time until lunch because no matter how hard they train, they will never be complete martial artists if they do not train their minds. Goku complains that he hates this stuff, but Kuririn is smug that he has Goku completely outclassed in this area. He tells Goku to start reading on page 12, so Goku opens the book and starts reading what appears to be erotic fiction, even though the book says "national language" (こくご kokugo) on the cover.

Inside Kame House, Lunch is preparing lunch. Goku is bored with the mind-training, so Muten Rōshi suggests they go eat. Goku digs in, while Rōshi and Kuririn watch Lunch nervously as she fights a sneeze. Then she makes a noise of surprise, startling them further, but she only just remembered that she has soup on the stove. She tells them she will bring it out, and they sigh in relief. At 12:30 p.m., Rōshi and the boys are lying on hammocks tied in the shade; he tells them they will nap until 1:30. "Move well, learn well, eat well, rest well"—this is the essence of the Eternal Turtle Hermit School training. Goku asks him if there will be lots of strong guys at the Tenka'ichi Budōkai, and he says there will be strong men from all over. Kuririn thinks this sounds amazing. Rōshi tells them that winning the tournament will be these fighters' life goal. Goku worries that they are taking it easy while these really strong guys are training hard, but then he closes his eyes and falls asleep. As it turns out, everyone else who was seen earlier is taking a nap, too.

Part B

Goku and Kuririn work at double speed.

At a construction site on the island, men are hard at work with big trunks and cranes and pickaxes. As Goku and Kuririn look around, Muten Rōshi tells the that their next task will be to help out with construction. They will build their muscles and also earn some part-time wages. The foreman comes over and asks Rōshi if these two runts are really going to be able to handle the work, which is not easy, but Rōshi quietly assures him that they are worth five men's pay. The foreman thinks that even one man's pay is a risk for these two, but Rōshi tells him to watch, and then tells the boys to get to work. Kuririn looks at his poor hands, and asks if they have to do this barehanded too, but Rōshi says they can use tools for this job, and Goku is happy to hear this. They get to work shoveling and hauling, while the other workers look on in amazement. Rōshi calls out to them, reminding them that if they do not work hard, they will not be able to enter the Tenka'ichi Budōkai, so they run even faster, sending passersby flying.

As Kuririn works, he says that no matter what, he will enter the tournament and get revenge on his bullies. He thinks back to his time at Ōrin Temple, where he was once sent flying by one of his elders. Kuririn gave up the fight, and his elder mocked him, goading him to get up and try again, but when he got up, another elder kicked him in the head, then complimented him for taking it well, while the other elder patted him on the head, telling him not to fall over. Then, the one who had kicked him took another shot, punching him in the stomach and sending him flying once more. Kuririn hit the fall and fell, and the elder acknowledged he had gone hard that time. He said he hoped it would be a lesson to Kuririn, and all the others laughed. Back in the present, Kuririn chops the ground so hard, he breaks his pickaxe. The head goes flying, landing dangerously close to Rōshi and the foreman, who agrees to give them five—no, six men's pay.

At the edge of a lake, Muten Rōshi tells the boys that since they worked up a sweat, their next training task will be swimming. Kuririn is surprised that they still have to do more training, but Rōshi tells him of course they do. Goku angrily tells him to teach them real martial arts instead of this stuff. Rōshi gets so mad at this, he spits to the side, and tells the boys that he cannot teach them martial arts if they are not strong enough. He points at a large boulder, and tells them he will teach them martial arts when they are strong enough to move it. Kuririn thinks that there is no way anyone could move a boulder that size, so Rōshi demonstrates, straining to budge the rock until he finally manages to move it several inches. He hides his face as he gasps for breath, and then he turns around to tell the boys that if they train hard every day, then some day they will be able to do this, too.

Goku surpasses his master on the first day?!

Meanwhile, Goku is trying to push a rock of similar size. Muten Rōshi thinks he is stubborn and tries to tell him it is impossible to do if he does not train, but then Goku budges the rock, pushing it several meters and leaving Kuririn and Rōshi bug-eyed. Goku excitedly announces that he did it, and Kuririn points out that Goku moved it farther than Muten Rōshi did. The old man laughs, and plays it off; he got the size of the boulders mixed up! He points at a bigger one, telling the boys that this is the one they will have to move before their strength training is complete. Goku tries to budge it, but concedes that he cannot. Rōshi says that is because his training is sorely deficient. Goku wants to know if the old man can move it. He insists that he can, but declines to demonstrate; they need to get back to their training. Kuririn looks at him suspiciously, and Goku with confusion, as usual.

Finally, Goku and Kuririn shed their clothes to get ready for swimming. Muten Rōshi instructs them to swim to the island across the lake and back, ten laps. Kuririn thinks that sounds doable, so Rōshi calls out for them to begin. They dive in the water, and Rōshi chuckles to himself. Kuririn thinks the water feels good, and Goku is happy to get clean. But Rōshi warns them that for some reason, this lake has sharks in it! The boys are too far away to hear, so they ask him to repeat himself. He shouts at them to be careful, and they look at each other in confusion, treading water. Before long, a giant shark rears its head, and the boys start swimming back to avoid it, but Rōshi tells them not to come that way; they have to touch the other side for the lap to count. They furiously swim to the opposite shore, climbing out of the water to safety. Then a giant dinosaur comes up behind them. It chases them along the lake's edge until Rōshi reminds them they need to swim back. They jump back in the water only to be chased by sharks again.

After their ten laps are finished, they gasp for breath in front of Muten Rōshi, who tells them it is time for their next training. They cannot believe there is more, but Muten Rōshi soon has both of them tied to a tree. They are confused, but he tells them this training is for their reflexes. Goku asks what they are supposed to do, tied up like they are. He explains that they are to dodge their opponents' attacks within the range of the ropes' length. He asks them if they are ready, then he slowly tip-toes to the tree. There is a bee's nest high in the tree; he smacks it with his club and makes a run for it, hiding behind some distant bushes. He shouts at his students to look out and be quick to avoid getting stung. It is a struggle, but they do their best to avoid the bees while Muten Rōshi cheers them on, accidentally attracting some bees to his location, which he fights off with his club.

Back at Kame House, Goku and Kuririn are quite exhausted and covered in welts. The sun is setting, so Muten Rōshi tells them that is enough training for today, though judging by the number of times they got stung, they still have a long way to go. He manages to hide from them that he got stung himself! Goku exhales, and Kuririn asks if they are going to be doing this kind of training every day. Muten Rōshi informs them that they were taking it easy today. From now on, they will do the same training with 20-kilogram turtle shells on their backs. He then asks if they understand now why he is called the Turtle Hermit, and they fall over at the thought of tomorrow. The Turtle Hermit's training sure is hard! But with the Tenka'ichi Budōkai as their goal, they made it through the day!
