Summary
Prologue
At the mountaintop temple, the Head Monk rings the belfry bell at sunrise. The ringing of the bell continues over the title card and the beginning of the episode.
Part A
Goku and Kuririn zig-zag through the trees with their milk bottles, turtle shells on their backs. Muten Rōshi's training is so hard that they thought they might not be able to keep up, but day after day, they persist with the goal of becoming stronger. As they struggle through the desert, Kuririn wonders how long it will be before they can learn martial arts. Goku reminds Kuririn, as they run from a dinosaur, that he will not teach them until they can move that big boulder.[1] The days and months pass, the boys repeating their training every day, sometimes making laps around the boulder as they run, until the harsh training gets easy.

One evening at dinner, the boys are more hungry than usual and ask for a lot of extra helpings. Muten Rōshi stares at them with a meatball in his chopsticks, and then the meatball slips from his grasp, falling under the table. The old man gets down on his hands and knees to grab it, and then he notices Lunch's legs under the table and decides this is a good opportunity to commit sex crimes. He slowly moves to lift her skirt with his chopsticks, but the rice cooker is empty, so Lunch gets up to go to the kitchen and get some more rice. The old man is disappointed, then angry at the boys for foiling his criminal behavior once again. Kuririn notices that he is missing, and Goku says he is probably taking a crap. Lunch returns with a giant vat of rice, which she plops on the table. The old man prepares to attack again with his chopsticks, but then the table cracks and collapses on top of him. Finally, everyone notices he is under the table. Goku tells him the bathroom is over there, and the old man laughs nervously.
With less than a month before the Tenka'ichi Budōkai, Goku rushes into Kame House and excitedly asks the old man to come with him. The Turtle Hermit is eating ices with Lunch, and he asks what the big deal is, but Goku tells him to just come and drags him to the giant boulder. The old man seems to have forgotten about the boulder entirely, but Goku and Kuririn are excited to show him that they can finally move it. Muten Rōshi is skeptical, but Goku goes first, straining against the boulder until it budges. He pushes it a meter or two while Rōshi goggles in disbelief. While Goku gasps for breath, Kuririn runs to the boulder. He tells his master that he cannot push it as far as Goku, but... He strains against the boulder and then pushes it just a little ways.
Goku asks the old man if he will teach them fighting moves now. He stalls for time by telling him their efforts were not too shabby, but thinks to himself that he was not at all serious about being able to move that boulder, and he never expected them to, either. Both of the boys wait excitedly for their skill training, promising to do their best, but Muten Rōshi admits that there is not really much he can teach them. The fundamentals of the Eternal Turtle Hermit School technique are the routines and tasks they have been performing for the last seven months. Every part of their body including the mind has been whipped into shape. The most important part of fighting style is execution.

Goku wants to know if they can really win without technique, but Muten Rōshi reminds them that martial art is not about winning; it is about surpassing yourself. They should take the basics they have learned and create their own styles. Kuririn asks how they are supposed to win at the Tenka'ichi Budōkai, so he reminds them that this is not their goal; they could not win it anyway. They are only entering to put their skills to the test and further their training. And so, he has nothing else to teach them, and he wants them to continue their training for the next month, but he is going to double the weight on their turtle shells to 40 kilograms! Later, at the construction site, Kuririn asks Goku if he thinks they will really be able to enter the Tenka'ichi Budōkai, just doing stuff like this. Goku thinks that with only eight out of a lot of people being able to compete, maybe not.

In a dark mountain forest, Yamcha trains alone. He has been here for a month, honing his skills for the Tenka'ichi Budōkai, and he thinks it is about time to return to the city. In West City, Bulma is walking home with a bag of groceries in her arms. She complains to Oolong and Pu'er that Yamcha has not even sent her a letter. Pu'er tells her that winning the Tenka'ichi Budōkai is Yamcha's dream, but Bulma is still angry that he has left her alone to worry about him, and maybe his priorities are not in order. Oolong tells her that Yamcha is lying dead in a field somewhere, and she scolds him for tempting fate. Just then, an orange drops out of her grocery bag, so she runs into the street to get it. Oolong and Pu'er see the truck coming and scream. Bulma sees it too late and freezes in terror.
Part B
Bulma tosses her bag of groceries away and cringes in anticipation of her certain death, but at the last instant, a mysterious figure whisks her to safety. When Bulma recovers from her terror, she tries to thank her savior, but his appearance frightens her, and she screams for help, but it is just Yamcha. She does not recognize him, so he pulls up his bangs so she can see his face better. Pu'er rushes to embrace Yamcha; meanwhile Bulma's earlier anger at him returns. She turns her back on him and scolds him for being carefree while other people were worried about him. Yamcha and Pu'er look at each other, and then Yamcha apologizes to Bulma. She turns back around, but complains that his clothes are dirty, and by the way, she has been thinking for a while that long hair is out of fashion; any boyfriend of hers should have a younger look. She walks away in a huff, and Yamcha blushes, then follows her, as to Pu'er and Oolong.

So it came to pass that it was the day before the Tenka'ichi Budōkai. At Kame House, Muten Rōshi tells Goku and Kuririn that it is time to leave for South City. Goku is excited. The old man tells the boys that they can take off their 40-kilogram turtle shells now; Kuririn was worried that it would be embarrassing to wear them at the tournament. They take them off, and Kuririn rotates his arms a few times, while Goku jumps in place, noting that his body feels weightless now. Muten Rōshi suggests they jump as high as they can. They jump, and they just keep going up, and they realize they are flying on their own! They fall back down to the ground, and they cannot contain their excitement; they run around a bit to test their speed.
Lunch calls out to the boys and tells them she has a gift for them: new suits for the tournament, complete with fedoras! They change inside the house, and then run outside to show off for Lunch, who says the suits look good on them. Goku tells Kuririn he looks funny, but Kuririn is just as amused by Goku, though they are really impressed with themselves. Rōshi tells them to hurry up and get in the car or they will miss their plane. Lunch wishes them luck and tells them to do their best; they run for the car, and the Turtle Hermit tells Lunch to look after things for them. Goku looks out of the windows of the plane, amazed that such a big thing can fly, but it is still slower than Kinto'un. Kuririn thinks he is a hick. As a stewardess walks by offering drinks, the Turtle Hermit gropes her behind, and she smacks him upside the head with her drink tray.

Later, Goku wakes up from a nap and asks the old man why the ground is glowing. He explains that those are the lights of the city; Goku is excited to see that the city glows at night, and Kuririn tells himself to ignore the hick again. The plane lands at an airstrip; as they wait for a taxi, Goku looks around in wonder at the sights of the city, and Kuririn is embarrassed. Muten Rōshi finally hails a taxi, asking the driver to take them to the Tenka'ichi Budōkai grounds. When they arrive, a man with a megaphone is calling for registrants; the deadline is at midnight. Goku cannot believe there are so many people in the world.
As they wait in line to register, Kuririn begins to get nervous, but Goku does not understand. While they are distracted, the old man tells the registrar that he would like to register; the registrar asks for his name, but he points to the boys, and says he is registering them. The registrar thinks that surely they are just here to spectate, but Muten Rōshi insists they will compete. The registrar is still skeptical, but just then, Yamcha spots Goku and calls out to him. Goku looks around, confused, and asks Kuririn if he called for him, but then Yamcha makes it over that way. Goku does not recognize him, so he does the pose for his Rōga Fū-Fū Ken, and Goku greets him excitedly; the short hair threw him off. Yamcha blushes and explains that long hair is unfashionable in the city. Kuririn asks who this guy is, so Goku introduces them, telling Yamcha that Kuririn trained with him at the old man's place.

Muten Rōshi turns around at the registration desk to tell the boys that they need to sign something, but he looks around and does not see them. Meanwhile, Bulma arrives with Oolong and Pu'er; Goku and Oolong greet each other as old friends, and Goku asks if everyone has been doing well. Then the old man shows up to greet Bulma, and she cringes away from him. Then she demands to know where he is living now; they tried to go visit Goku at his island but there was nothing there. He explains that the island was too small for training, so they relocated, but nevermind that; can they do a little puff-puff for old time's sake? Bulma's anger grows as he goes on about it, and then she produces a giant wooden hammer and clocks him with it. Oolong observes that he has not changed one bit.

Yamcha tells Goku that he cannot celebrate yet, with Goku also entering the tournament. Come tomorrow, they will all be opponents. Goku is confused; are they not starting the matches now? Bulma tells him that they will stay the night at their accommodations, and the matches will begin early in the morning. Goku is disappointed, but he goes to a hotel with Muten Rōshi and Kuririn and gets a good night's sleep.
In the morning, the Tenka'ichi Budōkai finally begins! Bulma is surprised there are so many people there, and Goku wonders if there will be a lot of contestants, too; Kuririn thinks there must be. Muten Rōshi tells them to go to the preliminaries and warns them not to wander off and get lost. The man with the megaphone calls out for all contestants to enter the competition hall for the preliminaries. As Goku and Kuririn go to enter, an official yet again questions whether they are really going to compete, and Goku confirms that they are, though Kuririn seems unsure.
Muten Rōshi bids them goodbye, wishing them luck, but then he remembers that he has something for them: new uniforms! Goku thinks they look great; Kuririn thinks they stand out, and he will feel bad if they lose. Oolong likes the new look. Rōshi reminds them that the eight finalists will be fighting out front for the spectators. He will be cheering with them, so he hopes to see them out there. Kuririn promises they will do their best. Bulma tells Yamcha to do his best; Yamcha assures her he will not lose easily; he has been training for this day for a long time.
Inside the preliminary hall, Goku and Kuririn get a look at all the contestants. The man with the megaphone announces the beginning of the preliminaries. Will Goku and Kuririn be able to win their way through? What about Yamcha?!
