I17 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 3 which was broadcast on 12 March 1986.

Overview

The full composition is part a of the suite entitled "Setting Out", which is track #02 on both the Ongakushū record and disc #2 of the Daizenshuu.

The initial piece, I17, was composed as music for setting out, and was also used in the broadcast as a traveling theme, but it was not used in the scene where they actually set out in the first episode. It was also used, among other things, as a lead at the beginning or end of the show.

I17 is given the title "The Joys Of Travel" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant, the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-35 based on its placement in the series.

Form and Analysis

I17 begins with a violin melody doubled an octave above by the glockenspiel and an octave below by the horn. A flute enters as a pickup to the B section, where the trumpet takes the melody, swing against the straight eighths in the other parts.
