I17 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball anime in 1986. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Episode 3 which was broadcast on 12 March 1986.

Overview

The full composition is part a of the suite entitled "Setting Out", which is track #02 on both the Ongakushū record and disc #2 of the Daizenshuu.

The initial piece, I17, was composed as music for setting out, and was also used in the broadcast as a traveling theme, but it was not used in the scene where they actually set out in the first episode. It was also used, among other things, as a lead at the beginning or end of the show.
Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z Daizenshuu (2:2a)

I17 is given the title "The Joys Of Travel" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-35 based on its placement in the series.

Form and Analysis

I17 begins with a violin melody doubled an octave above by the glockenspiel and an octave below by the horn. A flute enters as a pickup to the B section, where the trumpet takes the melody, swing against the straight eighths in the other parts.

Part Bars Details
A1 4 horn/violin/glock melody; antecedent (I—, I-ii)
A2 4 melody part 2; consequent; AC (ii—, V-I)
B1 4 trumpet melody; flute pickup; antecedent (I)
B2 4 trumpet melody part 2; consequent; PAC (I—, ii-V-I)

A and B both end with authentic cadences; the final cadence is perfect.
