Aru Village is a small community in the original Dragon Ball manga by Akira Toriyama, appearing solely in chapters 5 and 6. The name of the village is obstructed in the original manga, but a full name was created for it in the anime adaptation. Son Goku and Bulma visit the village on their first Dragon Ball hunt in Age 749. As this was the location where Bulma and Goku first met Oolong, it is sometimes described as Oolong's Village (ウーロンの村)[1], although Oolong did not live in the village itself.
General Overview
Aru Village is a small collection of at least twelve numbered houses around a central square located in eastern part of the main continent of Earth. In the manga, the houses are numbered with twelve the highest numbers seen, while the houses are not numbered in the anime adaptation. In contrast to Bulma's capsule houses and Oolong's mansion, the village is depicted as primitive with manual water pumps outside and no visible technology in the houses.[2][3][4] While Daizenshuu 3 states that Sherman Priest is the village's mayor, this is not directly indicated in the manga or anime.[5]
Around Age 749, the town is attacked by the "demon" Oolong who kidnaps several girls (Hedge, Hogg, and Lee) and plans to take more. Son Goku and Bulma arrive while searching for a Dragon Ball and agree to help out. They successfully rescue the girls in exchange for the Six-Star Ball which had been kept in the town by Grandma Paozu.

Name
In the original manga, only the English word "Village" is visible on a sign at the entrance to the community. In the anime, the full sign reading "Aru Village" is seen. The sign is subsequently broken during Oolong's attempt to kidnap Sherman Priest's daughter.[4] Although written in English on an entrance sign as if to denote a proper name, in Japanese "aru" (ある) is an article meaning "a" or "some." The humor is likely in the tension between the name appearing to be proper and the content of the name being generic, essentially a town named "A Town." Whether or not this was intended to be a "real" name for the village or just a throwaway joke (in the style of several place names in Dr. Slump) is unknown.
In the Nintendo Famicom game Dragon Ball Z: Super Legend of Goku -Assault Chapter-, the village is renamed "Yan-Yan Village."[6] As with the anime, this decision keeps Toriyama's use of the word "Village" in the name but selects a different prefix.

- ↑ The Dragon Ball at Aru Village was identified on Bulma's Dragon Radar as being 1000 km west of their location, while they were still at Son Goku's home. Although they detoured to get a ball from the Turtle Hermit, they resumed traveling and arrived there in three days.
