Grandma Paozu is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball universe by Akira Toriyama. Son Goku and Bulma bargain for a Dragon Ball from Grandma Paozu on their first Dragon Ball hunt in Age 749.
Biography
At some point in the past, a woman discovers the six-star Dragon Ball and keeps it in her family, eventually passing the ball along to her granddaughter, Grandma Paozu.
Many years later, in Age 749, Grandma Paozu's village has been repeatedly attacked by a shape-shifting "demon" who kidnaps young women. Goku and Bulma arrive at the village seeking the ball and agree to rescue the captured villagers in exchange for it.[1] Once the "demon" (Oolong) is defeated, Grandma Paozu keeps her end of the bargain and hands over the ball before accompanying the group to Oolong's lair to free the young girls. Grandma Paozu and several of the women in her village are seen wearing a headscarf, including Hogg's mother.[2]
In Age 767, Grandma Paozu was briefly seen outside the Chazke Village Shelter Dome. She may have fled there with Sherman Priest to escape from Cell. The anime does not depict Grandma Paozu's reaction to the dome's destruction, or where she went after it was destroyed.[3]
Name
Grandma Paozu's name is likely derived from 包子 (paozu), the Japanese reading of the word for steamed buns (baozi in Chinese). She is the only named character in her village in the manga whose name is not a pun related to military tanks. Mt. Paozu, Goku and family's home in the anime, is named for the same type of food.[4]
