Pansy is a fictional character created for the first Dragon Ball film, Dragon Ball: The Legend of Shenlong. The film premiered at Toei Manga Matsuri on 20 December 1986.
Biography
Pansy lives in a small village in the kingdom of King Gourmeth,[a] a pathological glutton who is destroying the village and the surrounding countryside to dig up rich-stones to feed his addiction.
Pansy shoots one of the men destroying the flower fields with a slingshot, and then her mother restrains her. When a soldier moves to beat her with the butt of his rifle, her father interferes, grabbing the butt of the gun and asking the soldier to have mercy on the child. The soldier tries to free his rifle, and then tries to attack Pansy's father, but the father is stronger and he knocks the soldier to the ground, tossing his rifle after him.
Two more soldiers join the fallen one, and then a large man with Gourmeth's bat on his uniform approaches, asking what is wrong. The soldiers tell Vongo that this man is being a nuisance. Pansy's father challenges Vongo, asking how he can destroy their flower fields, even if he has the king's permission. Vongo crushes a rock and tells him that the rich-stones within are more beautiful than flowers. Pansy's father stands his ground and tells Vongo to leave. Vongo says he will leave if Pansy's father can defeat him. Then he punches Pansy's father in the head, then again in the gut, then one more time in the head, knocking him down.
Pansy's father tries to get up, but he cannot; Pansy and her mother rush to his side while Vongo walks away and hops in an armored vehicle with Pasta, taking off. One of the villagers asks why this is happening, and another thinks they must have fooled the king somehow.
Pansy is next seen some time later running through a forest, where she encounters Oolong in the form of a giant ogre. He wants to marry her, but she shoots him with her slingshot and calls for help. Just then, Bulma and Goku pull up in a car, and Goku gets out of the car to confront Oolong, telling him that his grandpa taught him it is wrong to bully weak people. When Oolong realizes Goku is strong, he transforms into a bat and flies away. Goku chases after him, and then Bulma notices Pansy hiding behind a tree.
While Goku chases Oolong, Bulma and Pansy catch up in the car and find Goku battling Yamcha, who has the upper hand because Goku is hungry. When Bulma arrives, Yamcha collapses, and he retreats with Pu'er. The others gather in Oolong's camper, and Bulma asks Pansy what she is doing out at night. Pansy apologizes and explains that she traveling to the Southern Islands to find Muten Rōshi. Bulma asks who that is, and Oolong says he has heard of him; he is a world-famous martial arts master, also known as the Turtle Hermit. Hearing this, Goku wants to meet him too. Bulma tells Pansy that they are going in that direction too, and Pansy begs to travel with them.
Bulma asks Pansy why she wants to meet Muten Rōshi, and Pansy says she wants him to save her country, which is being torn apart for rich-stones. Goku asks what those are, and Bulma explains that they are the most valuable stones in the world. Pansy says she wants Muten Rōshi to defeat all the bad people; since the rich-stones were discovered, King Gourmeth has progressively gotten worse; he has become a monster that can only eat the most expensive food, so he needs a lot of rich-stones. He has ruined the mountains, the lakes, the fields, and everyone's houses; no one can stand up to his army.
Pansy adds that Gourmeth is looking for the seven Dragon Balls that will grant any wish. Bulma is shocked, and Goku realizes that these guys must be the one who stole his Four-Star Ball, which he calls "grandpa", and Bulma realizes that this is why so many Dragon Balls are gathering in the East. Pansy repeats that this is why she needs Muten Rōshi's help. Meanwhile, Yamcha and Pu'er are eavesdropping.
Some time later, everyone arrives on the island where Muten Rōshi lives. When he emerges from Kame House, Pansy calls out to him, and Oolong tells Goku that this is the Turtle Hermit. The old man approaches Goku, asking if he is the one who wants to kill him to make a name for himself. Goku and Oolong are confused, but the old man tells them that he is not that easy to defeat and they should give up. Pansy tells him that he is wrong; Goku saved her life and would not want to kill him. Rōshi calls out to where Yamcha and Pu'er are hiding behind his house, and Yamcha rushes out, insisting that they are really evil. Then Bulma spots Yamcha and gets excited, rushing to flirt with him. He freaks out and runs behind the house again.
To verify who is telling the truth, the Turtle Hermit calls for Kinto'un. The cloud answers his call, and he explains that it can be used to fly through the air, but only if you have a pure heart. He jumps on the cloud to demonstrate, and falls through. Goku however is able to jump on, and he takes the cloud for a test drive. Yamcha escapes on his waterbike with Pu'er. Then Bulma sees that the Three-Star Ball is hanging around the old man's neck, which the old man agrees to give her for a peek at her boobs. She arranges for Oolong to transform into her and perform the deed.
Shortly thereafter, the island is attacked by Vongo and Pasta, who are firing torpedoes from a submerged submarine. They destroy Kame House and steal the Three-Star Ball from Bulma, but they miss the the Two-Star Ball she already had. They surface their submarine, and Pansy identifies it as belonging to Gourmeth. Muten Rōshi is angry that his house was destroyed, so he removes his shirt and fires a Kamehameha at the submarine, destroying it and forcing Vongo and Pasta to retreat in a small escape craft. Goku asks the Turtle Hermit to teach him that move, and the old man tells him it would take 50 years of training.
Pansy is convinced that she was right to seek Muten Rōshi's help. She approaches him and begs him to save her country. Before he can answer, Goku destroys a nearby rock with a Kamehameha. He is disappointed that it was not as big as the old man's, but Rōshi realizes that this is one very amazing boy. They depart, Goku on Kinto'un and Pansy in a ship with Bulma and Oolong. Pansy recalls what Muten Rōshi said to her: he has separated himself from the world, but Pansy has collected some good friends. With her friends and some effort, she will get her wish answered. Pansy is sad that he would not help her, but Bulma promises her that they will take care of Gourmeth.
When they arrive at Gourmeth's Castle, they come under fire. Goku battles Vongo while Bulma tries to pilot their ship around the hazards. They are hit anyway, and the plane crashes, throwing its passengers into a nearby lake. Goku and Yamcha storm the castle, while Bulma and Pansy enter with a transformed Oolong as protection. They run into Yamcha and Pu'er, the latter of whom is transformed into a giant monster as well. Then Pasta intercepts them, shooting Yamcha and demanding Bulma hand over her Dragon Ball. Bulma refuses, and Yamcha gets up to battle Pasta. She tosses grenades at them, and they run.
Eventually, Pansy and the others make it to Gourmeth's throne room. Gourmeth goes on a rampage in his search for the last Dragon Ball. As he fights Goku, Bulma looks at her Dragon Radar and realizes that Gourmeth has eaten the other Dragon Balls,[b] so she tosses hers into his mouth and summons Shenlong. The castle is blown apart, and while Bulma and Yamcha stutter to get their wishes out, Pansy cuts in and tells Shenlong that they do not want the rich-stones, asking him to return her country to the way it was before.[c] The rich-stones rise from the ground, and everything else is restored.
Pansy watches Shenlong depart in tears of happiness. Behind her, Gourmeth emerges naked from behind a rock; his form has returned to normal, but he is still hungry. Pansy hands him an apple; he bites into it, and thinks it is delicious. He asks her what it is, and she tells him it is an apple. He asks if it is an ordinary apple, and Pansy's father tells him that is right; these apples are one of the many things he destroyed in his insane quest. Gourmeth considers the beauty of the nearby apple tree while Pansy embraces her father. Goku takes off on Kinto'un as the villagers celebrate, and Pansy waves at him as he departs.
Name
Pansy's name (パンジ panji) is derived from the common-use transliteration of the flower's name in Japanese (パンジー panjī).[1]

Pansy's theme is less developed than other character themes in the film. It is introduced in K-218, when Pansy is seen running through the forest, with a simple identifying motive in F Minor: 5-5-6-5-4-3-4-5 (C-C-D♭-C-B♭-A♭-B♭-C). This exact same motive appears again in K-222, when Bulma encounters Pansy.
The theme's final iteration is in K-231, but it has a slight twist at the end of the phrase: 5-5-6-5-4-3-2-3-1. This phrase continues into a more developed melody that is not used in other tracks, and as Pansy tells the story of her village, Gourmeth's theme is woven in underneath the new melody.
Notes
- ↑ The Dragon World has a global government under Earth's King; however Toei Animation often introduces regional kings in their original material.
- ↑ Dragon Balls cannot be detected when they are inside a living being, but this limitation of the Dragon Radar was not revealed until Dragon Ball Chapter 97 which was published two months before the film premiered, making it too late to correct the discrepancy.
- ↑ Pansy's voice is echoed when she makes the wish in same way that Oolong's voice was echoed when he wished for panties in Dragon Ball Episode 12.
