Shaolong is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball universe by Akira Toriyama. Son Goku encountered him in King Wonton's kingdom while training for the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. Shaolong is a martial artist in the Leopard Fang School, but considerably less powerful than his brother Tenlong, that school's leader. While he begins as an antagonist to Goku, he appears to see the error of his ways. His only appearance is in an episode written by Toshiki Inoue.
Biography
Not much is known about Shaolong prior to Son Goku's arrival. Much like his brother, he trained at the Leapard-Fang School, but he appears to have amassed less skill and is not shown to be very proficient in combat. Unlike his brother, he is impolite, quick to anger, and is seen to drink to excess. At approximately Age 750, Shaolong accused Chin Shōken of stealing his wallet (which he had dropped) which set in motion Son Goku coming to the Chin's school's aid. Later that night, Shaolong became drunk and attempted to fight Goku again, but lost badly. The following day, Goku beat his brother at the Imperial Match and the pair both subsequently joined the Chin school.[1]
Name
Shaolong's name means "dragon" in Chinese, closely related to his brother Tenlong, meaning "heavenly dragon". Both names are closely related to the Chinese for Shenlong, "dragon god".
Production
Due to the production schedule inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of Dragon Ball interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. Shaolong and his surrounding events help to flesh out Son Goku's training prior to the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai.
Notable Skills
Shaolong is a decent fighter in the Leopard-Fang School, but behaves more like a bully than a martial artist. He is easily defeated by Goku while drunk, but his sober fighting abilities have not yet been seen on screen.
Performance
Shaolong is played by Takeshi Watabe, a Japanese voice actor. His largest part in Dragon Ball media was playing Mucchi Mocchi in Dragon Ball GT, although he also played Pumbukin, one of Bardock's companions, in Dragon Ball Z TV Special 1.
