Chin Shōken is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball universe by Akira Toriyama. Son Goku encountered him in King Wonton's kingdom while training for the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai. Chin Shōken is a martial arts student of the Chin School, learning under his father, Chin Taiken. His only appearance is in an episode written by Toshiki Inoue.
Biography
Little is revealed in the series about Shōken Taiken prior to Son Goku's arrival except that he is the son of Chin Taiken and that he is a student in his father's school. By approximately Age 750[note 1], he had learned some but his father judged him as being far beneath the abilities of Son Goku.
At that time, King Wonton held a small tournament, the Imperial Match, to determine which martial arts school would be preeminent in his kingdom. Chin Taiken intended to compete, but his illness prevented him from competing effectively and he planned to forfeit. Shōken wanted to compete in his father's place, despite being judged not ready yet.. Son Goku, traveling through, offered to represent the Chin school at the tournament but Shōken became jealous that the boy was welcomed to represent his father's school at the competition while he was not. He attempted to sabotage Son Goku by slipping him a laxative during breakfast, but it did not take effect quickly enough and Son Goku joined the competition. Shōken's sabotage nearly caused Goku to lose the match and in his nervous guilt he dropped the medication that he used on Goku, revealing his plot to his father. Goku ultimately won and even complimented Shōken on his cooking before leaving.[1]
Name
Chin Shōken's personal name, Shōken, means "little fist" in Chinese. This is made to contrast against his father, Taiken, which meant "big fist". Shōken's surname was only implied in the episode itself but was confirmed in Daizenshuu 3.[2]
Production
Due to the production schedule inherent in producing a weekly anime series based on a weekly comic, the writers of Dragon Ball interjected anime-only material both as a means of extending the runtime and to flesh out the Dragon Ball universe. Chin Shōken and his related adventure flesh out Son Goku's training prior to the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budōkai.
Notable Skills
Chin Shōken was a martial arts student around Age 750, but far less powerful than either his father or Son Goku.
Performance
Chin Shōken is played by Katsue Miwa, a Japanese voice actor. This is her only role in the Dragon Ball series.
Notable Appearances
- Dragon Ball Episode 80 - Chin Taiken's introduction and only appearance to date.
Notes
- ↑ Son Goku could have met with Chin Shōken any time between Age 750 and 753, however the exact year is not established in the anime.
