"Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans" is an animated feature of the Japanese series Dragon Ball, produced by Bandai and Toei Animation as an exclusive bonus for the Raging Blast 2 video game for the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360. Its story is based on the two-part "Official Visual Guides" released in August 1993 entitled "Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans", which served as a walkthrough for the Famicom video game of the same name. The original story was written by Takao Koyama and adapted by Hitoshi Tanaka and Yoshihiro Ueda from its original hour-long length to a shortened 30 minute feature.

One of the few Dragon Ball anime products to debut outside of Japan, it was released in the United States on 02 November 2010. In Japan, it was released on 11 November 2010, between Dragon Ball Kai episode 80 and 81. The feature was later streamed online for a limited period on the official V-Jump website until it was released on a bonus DVD, alongside "Episode of Bardock", in Saikyō Jump #3 on 03 February 2012.

Summary

Prologue

A long time ago, there was once an advanced civilization somewhere in space. Their planet, once peaceful, was under attack by the Saiyans. The scouter-wearing population tried to push back the invaders, but their Great Ape forms under the light of the planet's full moon were too powerful. Not far from the battle, Doctor Raichi put the finishing touches on the Hacchi Hyack, a "grudge-amplifying" device that could turn the Tsufruians' rage and use it to take revenge on the Saiyans. As he boarded a rocket carrying his creation, his lab the door crashed open. He managed to launch the ship, but he fell to his death. The craft roared into the sky, absorbing the rage-energy of Raichi and his fallen kinsmen as it ascended to space. The Saiyans fired on the rocket but missed; they did not pursue.

Many years later, the spirit of Doctor Raichi reformed on the long-forgotten spacecraft. Finally, he declared, it was time for revenge.

Film

High above Earth, a dark planet appears and spews out negative energy. It blots out the sun above West City as the populace collapses in the presence of a strange gas. Son Goku and Gohan teleport to Capsule Corp. Headquarters to find Future Trunks and Bulma already trying to find out what is going on. The TV news reports that alien devices have fallen to Earth from the dark planet, each one spreading the vile gas around the world. Bulma identifies it as "Destron Gas" and it will destroy all life on the planet in only seventy days. Fortunately, she says, strong people like Goku and his friends are partly immune from the effects. Vegeta arrives and claims that only the Tsufruians could have created a weapon like that, but they were destroyed a long time ago by his father. He reveals that the Saiyans destroyed the Tsufruians' world, Planet Plant, and claimed it for their own. Vegeta theorizes that they are out for revenge against the Saiyans. Bulma immediately gets to work on an antidote.

A short time later, Goku and his friends fly above West City in search of the Destron Gas generator. Gohan is shocked by how damaged the city looks already. They quickly discover the generator on top of a communications tower. Vegeta launches a ki blast to destroy it, but the machine protects itself with an energy barrier. Before they can try again, a mocking voice rings out as a cloud of gas transforms into a familiar shape: it's Freeza! He is quickly joined by Coola, Slug, and Tullece. Vegeta laughs at the assembled villains, telling them that they are all much stronger than they were when they last fought. Freeza laughs at this claim and the battle is joined. Goku approaches Coola, while Trunks takes Freeza, Piccolo faces Slug, and Gohan beats on Tullece. Goku remarks that they are more powerful than the last time they fought, but still makes short work of Coola... only for the villain to transform into gas and reform as Coola once again, completely healed. Although Goku and his friends defeat each of the gas-villains over and over again, they weaken under the effect of the Destron Gas. Eventually, Goku is even unable to control his ki! Just in the nick of time, Bulma arrives with an antidote for the Destron Gas. She launches dozens of capsules to distribute the cure. Not only do Goku and the others regain their strength, the Destron Gas machine is destroyed as well. Trunks is in awe of his mother's genius! Goku and his friends have no difficulty defeating the gas-monsters once again, but this time they are unable to re-form. Gohan finally realizes that they are all imposters. Goku calls on Kaiō to explain what is going on. Kaiō explains that while they have defeated the generator in West City, the rest of the world is still under attack. They can only win if they defeat the source of the gas: the dark planet.

In his fortress, Dr. Raichi sits on top of a pile of spheres of grudge energy. He looks on as the anger of Coola, Freeza, and the others returns to their spheres. He remarks that, once they have captured enough grudge energy, they will be able to create the ultimate warrior. Suddenly, Goku and the others arrive. Raichi admits that he is the one that sent the gas to Earth. He confirms that he has returned as a ghost thanks to the power of the Grudge Amplification Device, Hacchi Hyack. Piccolo realizes that the same machine brought Freeza and the other villains back as ghosts as well. Goku demands that he turn off the gas generators on Earth, but he refuses. Although he only seeks revenge on the Saiyans, he claims, he does not care at all about Earth. He is disappointed that the gas did not kill the Saiyans already, but he says that he will finish the job. Goku and the others attack, but are unable to breach Raichi's energy barrier. The heroes pause for a moment to power up as Raichi laughs at them from the safety of his energy bubble. They rush in to attack again, but this time make cracks in the force field! Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Trunks all pummel the glowing barrier, weakening it enough for Goku to finish it off with a kamehameha. Now weak and exposed, Raichi begins to panic. Vegeta launches a Final Flash, seemingly destroying the doctor's ghost utterly.

While the heroes collect their breath, Raichi's voice can be heard once again: he has become a cloud of Destron Gas, just as Freeza and the other villains had back on Earth. Instead of re-forming, Raichi announces that his grudge will join the others to finally power his creation, Hacchi Hyack. Raichi gives his remaining power to the machine, causing it to become so powerful that Kaiō fears that it could destroy his whole North Galaxy. A red armored figure emerges from the assembled energy: Hacchi Hyack has taken on a humanoid form. Vegeta is at first excited to fight him, but with a single blow Vegeta is knocked to the ground. Hacchi Hyack rushes into attack and easily takes on all of the remaining heroes at once. Piccolo is slammed into a wall. Vegeta recovers to launch another Final Flash, but Hacchi Hyack takes it without damage. He counters by launching a Revenge Cannon at Vegeta, Goku screams for the Saiyan Prince to dodge, but he takes the blast full on and is knocked unconscious into a wall. Trunks rushes in to help his father, while Hacchi Hyack turns his attention to Son Gohan. He knocks the boy through the floor and fires another Revenge Cannon at him, but Piccolo deflects the blast at the last moment. As a reward, Piccolo is knocked out next.

Gohan recovers and rushes in for an assault just as Hacchi Hyack powers up his cannon again. Goku screams for his son to stop, but it is Trunks who distracts Hacchi Hyack by kicking him in the face. Except... Hacchi Hyack is bleeding! Goku realizes that while Hacchi Hyack is defending and charging his attack, there is a split second when he has no ki defense and can be injured. Hacchi Hyack has no difficulties holding off Trunks and Gohan at the same time, while Goku merely watches the battle. Goku charges in, but pauses and counts to himself when Hacchi Hyack defends to charge up his attack. He counts to 15 before the attack is ready, but dodges out of the way easily enough. Goku shouts to tell the others what he found, but Gohan already realized as well: fifteen seconds to charge and Hacchi Hyack is momentarily weakened right before he attacks. Goku charges in to attack while the others wait for him to power his Revenge Cannnon again. Goku takes an incredible beating, but eventually Hacchi Hyack decides to end the fight with his powerful blast. Goku immediately begins counting while preparing a kamehameha. All of the other heroes prepare their most powerful attacks as well: Gohan with a masenko, Vegeta with a Final Flash, Piccolo with a makankosappo, and Trunks a burning cannon[note 1]. On the count of fourteen, they all fire their attacks to catch Hacchi Hyack in his moment of weakness. Hacchi Hyack scrambles to block it with his own blast and a beam struggle commences. Goku and the others push through, enveloping Hacchi Hyack in their combined energy and vaporizing him. Goku teleports everyone away as the planet breaks apart.

Around the world, Destron Gas generators explode and life quickly returns to normal. The flowers that had wilted return to life. Goku and the other land at Capsule Corp. and are met by Bulma, Dr. Brief (with Tama), and Bulma's mother. Even Kaiō congratulates them from the Other World! Only Chi-chi, waiting for Goku and Gohan to come home and eat, seems upset. Goku tries to explain to Chi-chi that they were saving the Earth, but she wants none of it.

Setting

This set of episodes does not appear to fit into the established continuity of the series due to appearances by Tullece, Coola, and Slug. Each of their previous appearances were in movies whose timelines are uncertain or contradictory. As such, the below dates are approximate only.

Flashbacks:

  • Approximately Age 550 - The Saiyans arrive on Planet Plant in a damaged spaceship and are welcomed by their new neighbors, the Tsufruians.
  • Approximately Age 720-Age 730 - The Saiyans and the Tsufruians battle for control of Planet Plant. In this version of the retelling, it is not clear if they had lived on the planet for hundreds of years prior.
  • Approximately Age 762 - Goku defeats Tullece and Slug.[note 2]
  • August Age 764 - Trunks defeats Freeza.
  • Unknown date between Age 764-767 - Goku defeats Coola on Earth.

Tidbits

Differences from the Original

  • The opening prologue showing the battle on Planet Plant was originally at the end of the first episode, part of Kaiō's explanation to Goku. In this version, it is implied that the Saiyans conquered as soon as they arrived rather than living in peace with the Tsufruians for hundreds of years.
  • Doctor Raichi's ship did not land on Planet Ankok, but rather remained floating in space after escaping the Planet Plant. It somehow became the "Dark Planet" and entered Earth's orbit itself rather that being hidden at the edge of the galaxy.
  • In the original OVA, Son Gohan discovered the Destron Gas's effects by noticing that parts of the forest were dying. In this special, the initial discovery is made by an unknown girl and her mother who observe a dying flower. The gas also appears much more severe, knocking people unconscious after even brief exposure.
  • In the original OVA, Bulma researched the Destron Gas with her father. In this special, she researched with Future Trunks. Piccolo and Vegeta were already at Capsule Corp instead of appearing later.
  • In the original OVA, Dende and Mr. Popo work out that the world has seventy days to live and tell Goku. In this special, Bulma works out the timeframe.
  • The OVA includes a different origin for the Saiyan/Tsufruian conflict. In the original, the Saiyans landed on Planet Plant and leaved peacefully for hundreds of years before King Vegeta conquered it. This special depicts a primitive Saiyan race piloting a crash-landed spaceship to Planet Planet and seizing it as their own.
  • This film features only a single Destron Gas generator in West City, although others around the world are mentioned. Bulma is ultimately the one responsible for defeating the gas as none of the warriors could break through the barriers, but her antidote had no difficulty doing so.
