Synopsis
For the first time in five years, Bulma has been invited over to Kame House, where the Turtle Hermit and Kuririn live. Goku also arrives (late), and introduces Gohan, but the alien then lands in front of the four of them! Calling Goku "Kakarrot", he declares that he is one of the Saiyans, the strongest warrior race in the universe, and that furthermore he is Goku's older brother, Raditz! Goku and the others are astonished. When Goku refuses to help him invade another planet, Raditz takes Gohan hostage!![1]
Summary
Part A
As Raditz flies toward his target, he asks whether Kakarrot has lost the pride of the Saiyans, the mightiest warriors in the universe.
Bulma arrives at Kame House in a Capsule Corp helicopter, and she greets the Turtle Hermit and Kuririn. She says that the Turtle Hermit asked her to come visit, so she came; the Turtle Hermit says it has really been a long time. Bulma says his house hasn't changed. The Turtle Hermit complains that she nevers come to visit unless she is told to come, but then she presents him with a gift of manju buns. Turtle is excited; the Turtle Hermit says she did not need to go to all that trouble; he says that she could have just let him touch her boobs, reaching for them to demonstrate, but she knocks him upside the head with the box of buns. The Turtle Hermit complains that she has never appreciated his gags. Bulma retorts that he has always been a lecher.
Goku and Gohan are on the way to Kame House on Kinto-un. Meanwhile, Kuririn asks Bulma where Yamcha has been. Bulma becomes angry, and says she is so mad at him that she did not tell him about their gathering, and that they should enjoy themselves without him. The Turtle Hermit remarks that they sure do fight a lot, and Kuririn agrees. Bulma asks what has happened to Lunch, and Kuririn explains that she went chasing after Tenshinhan five years ago. Kuririn opens the box of manju buns with enthusiasm.
Raditz is still following the power reading on his scouter, and he notes with excitement that it is moving at great speed. Goku and Gohan arrive at Kame House, and Raditz proclaims that Kakarrot will not get away from him. Goku calls out when he lands, and Bulma and Kuririn turn around. Raditz notes that the reading has stopped moving. Bulma and Kuririn emerge from the house with the Turtle Hermit, and they inquire after the child Goku is holding. Kuririn asks whether Goku has taken up baby-sitting, but Goku explains that it is his son, much to the consternation and shock of his friends. Goku tells Gohan to introduce himself; he politely says hello and bows, and everyone responds in kind. Goku tells everyone that his name is Son Gohan. (Gohan notices Turtle, who blushes.) The Turtle Hermit notes that Gohan was named after Goku's late grandfather, which Goku confirms; the Turtle Hermit cannot believe that Goku brought along a child. (Gohan is wary of Turtle, and clings to his father for protection.)
Bulma asks Gohan how old he is, and and after counting on his fingers, he tells her politely that he is four years old. Bulma is amazed that Goku's son has such good manners; Goku explains that Chi-Chi is fussy about that. Bulma asks Gohan what he wants to be when he grows up, and he says he wants to be a great scholar. Bulma is surprised at this. Gohan dodges Turtle again, and Bulma notices that Gohan has a tail. Goku reminds her that he used to have one. (Gohan finally warms up to Turtle and pets him.) Bulma, however, is concerned. She asks Goku whether Gohan ever does anything strange, and Goku is confused. The Turtle Hermit asks whether he ever changes when the moon is full, but Goku explains they always go to bed early. (Gohan rides away on Turtle's back.) Goku asks why they were curious, but they assure him it is nothing. (Gohan climbs off Turtle's back to play in the surf, but it scares him.) Kuririn asks whether Gohan is strong like him. (Gohan notices a crab on Turtle's back.) Goku becomes downcast, and explains that, though he thinks Gohan has a lot of power, Chi-Chi gets angry when Goku tries to train him. (Gohan pretends to play rock-paper-scissors with the crab.) Kuririn complains that this is a waste of Gohan's potential, and Goku agrees; he explains that Chi-Chi thinks martial arts are not needed anymore because the world is at peace, and that Gohan should study. (The crab blows bubbles in Gohan's face.) The Turtle Hermit laughs, amused that such a tomboy turned out to be such an education-minded mother.
Gohan runs back to his father's side, laughing, and Bulma asks Goku whether that is a Dragon Ball on Gohan's hat. Goku confirms it is the four-star ball, reminding her that it was a keepsake from his grandpa. He says he searched it out and put it on Gohan's hat, and he also found the three-star and the six-star balls, which he keeps at home. Bulma is reminded of all their Dragon Ball–hunting adventures. Kuririn picks up a rock, asking Goku whether he intends to gather them all and wish for something. Then he throws his rock, skimming it across the water. Goku also picks up a rock, explaining that he does not have anything in mind to wish for. He skims his rock across the water, considerably outstripping Kuririn's reach, and the Turtle Hermit thinks to himself that, though he expected Goku's power might have diminished after he settled down with a family... Kuririn remarks that Goku is as strong as ever.
Goku suddenly senses a great power approaching. Gohan clings to his leg, and everyone else seems confused. Kuririn cannot sense anything, and Bulma wonders if it might be Yamcha. Goku does not seem to think so; he is frightened. Eventually, Raditz is seen approaching. (The crab falls off the tree.) Kuririn tries to make out what is approaching; Goku wonders who it is. The Turtle Hermit senses a ferocious bloodlust from him. Raditz lands, telling Goku: "We meet at last." He says that Goku has grown (which gets Goku's attention) but he still recognized him on sight. Raditz uses Goku's Saiyan name, Kakarrot (which confuses Goku) and says that he looks just like their father. Bulma wonders what that means, and Kuririn asks Goku what the man is talking about. Raditz chastises Goku for the state of this planet; he was supposed to eliminate the population; why has he been slacking? Goku looks to Muten Rōshi for help, and Kuririn tells Raditz to go back to wherever he came from, accusing him of being drunk. He ignores Goku's warnings and approaches Raditz, who uses his tail to knock Kuririn into the front wall of Kame House. Goku becomes angry, but then he realizes, along with Bulma and the Turtle Hermit, that Raditz has a tail!
Part B
Goku cannot believe that Raditz has a tail. Raditz says Goku must have finally realized who he is, but Goku is still confused. (Gohan is crying and trying to get his father's attention; Goku pushes him away until Bulma comes to get him.) Goku asks Raditz what he is talking about. Raditz asks whether he has forgotten everything; Goku tells Raditz that is name is not Kaka-whatever; it's Son Goku. Raditz cannot believe that Goku does not remember. Gohan breaks free from Bulma to run toward his father; Gohan grabs his father's leg, but Goku tells him to get back. Raditz asks Goku if he has ever suffered a major blow to the head. This gets the attention of Muten Rōshi, but Goku still does not know what Raditz is talking about. (Goku is still trying to encourage Gohan to get back; Bulma retrieves him again.) Raditz clarifies, asking whether Goku his his head when he was a child, demanding that Goku answer him. Goku confirms that he did; he does not remember, but he still has the scar. Raditz thinks this explains everything, but Goku still does not know what he is getting at.
The Turtle Hermit tells Goku that his Grandpa Gohan told him a story a long time ago. One day in a deep valley, he found something that looked like it had fallen from the sky. It was a round capsule with a tailed baby inside. Gohan took the child home and tried to raise him, but the child was violent and did not like him. Gohan was at his wit's end, until one day the child fell into a ravine and hit his head. Any other child would have died, but this child had an exceptional life force and survived. When he recovered, his disposition changed and he was a good boy. Goku asks whether this child was him, and the Turtle Hermit confirms. Bulma asks what this means, and whether Goku and the intruder have some kind of connection.
Goku demands that Raditz explain who he is. Raditz says Goku is making things difficult by forgetting, but he will remind him; after all, Raditz has a lot of work for him to do. Kuririn recovers and emerges from the house; Goku asks whether he is okay, and Kuririn warns him that this is no ordinary guy, but Gokus knows that already; he says that just talking to him has made him afraid; this has never happened to him before. Raditz explains that Goku is not a human from this planet; he is of the mightiest warrior race in the universe, the Saiyans of Planet Vegeta, and Raditz is his older brother. Kuririn and Bulma are in shock; Goku tells Raditz to stop talking nonsense. Kuririn asks what Goku is doing on Earth if he is from outer space. Raditz explains that Goku was sent to this planet to exterminate its population. Goku is shocked, but Raditz explains that the Saiyans, being a renowned warrior race, are tasked with searching space for planets with good environments, and once they have wiped out the native populations, they sell the planets to aliens who are in the market. Adults are sent to planets with formidable populations, but babies are sent to planets with weaker populations.
Kuririn says that, if this story is true, then the Saiyans are terrible people who make Piccolo look like a nice guy. Bulma hugs Gohan and wonders how they can send babies to conquer worlds all alone. Just then, Raditz notices that Gohan has a tail. Raditz tells Goku that several years should have been plenty of time for him to exterminate the population of Earth, if he had not forgotten his mission. This planet has a moon, after all. Goku asks what this has to do with it, and Raditz tells him not to play dumb; surely he knows they are at their best when the moon is full. Goku does not know what he is talking about, but Kuririn, Bulma, and the Turtle Hermit understand perfectly. Raditz finally notices that Goku's tail is gone. He demands to know what happened to it; Goku explains that it was cut off a long time ago and never came back. Raditz is horrified; no wonder Goku was able to assimilate with the natives. Goku seems to finally be convinced that is a Saiyan and Raditz's brother, but Goku tells him that it does not matter; what Kuririn said is right; anyone who behaves this way is terrible. He is Son Goku, and he was raised on Earth.
Goku tells Raditz to leave. Bulma voices her assent, and the Turtle Hermit chimes in too; regardless of his past, Goku is a stand-up citizen of Earth, the best there is. Kuririn tells Raditz that Goku has even saved the Earth, and Raditz needs to get lost. Raditz laughs, saying he cannot allow this; the Saiyans have always been few in numbers, but now their planet has been destroyed by a giant meteor, and all the Saiyans were killed, including their parents. Including Goku, there are four Saiyans left; Raditz and one of the others survived because they were on a mission to another planet, and the other was sent to a planet by himself, like Goku. They have found a good planet that they think they will be able to sell at a high price; they would like to purge it but they think it might be too difficult for the three of them. Faced with this dilemma, Raditz remembered that he had a brother. Raditz tells goku that his battle power has yet to mature, but he could managed if he joined them. Goku is still not interested, so Raditz tries to appeal to his Saiyan blood, but Goku says he would die before joining him.
Raditz tries a new tactic; he asks Goku whether the child with a tail is his son. Goku says no, but Raditz he can't be fooled; the tail is proof. Goku asks what he is getting at; Raditz says that since Goku won't listen to reason, he will take the child. Goku tells Raditz to stay back, threatening to knock him flying, but Raditz moves at great speed and kicks Goku onto the shore, taking Gohan. Goku is in so much pain, he is helpless to do anything. Raditz tells him that if he wants Gohan back alive, he must do as his brother says. Kuririn is flabbergasted that Goku was taken out with only one blow; Bulma and the Turtle Hermit are seething in anger. Raditz tells Goku that he has one day to kill a hundred of the planet's natives and pile their bodies up at Kame House for proof; Raditz thinks Goku might need help from his friends. Raditz says he is looking forward to it, and that he does not want to kill his brother's son if he can avoid it. Gohan cries for his father, and Goku reaches helplessly for him. Will Goku be able to save Gohan?!
