This article is about the first individual episode of FUNimation's English dub of the Dragon Ball Z television series from 1996. For information about the home video release compiling the first four episodes, see Dragon Ball Z: Arrival.

"The Arrival of Raditz" is the first episode of FUNimation's original English dub of the Dragon Ball Z television series, first aired the weekend of 14 September 1996 on American television as distributed in syndication to local networks by Saban. This episode's production features the Vancouver-based voice cast from Ocean Studios and a replacement musical score under the responsibility of Shuki Levy.

This episode was later replaced in FUNimation's home video releases by a redub first produced in 2005 (initially for the "Ultimate Uncut Edition" home video line) featuring the Texas-based voice cast and a new replacement musical score by Nathan Johnson. This version properly covers and separates the first two episodes (titled "The New Threat" and "Reunions" in the revised English dub), and serves as the basis for all re-releases moving forward.

Summary

The prologue uses footage from Dragon Ball Z Movie 2.

Prologue

    (narration verbatim)
First, there was Dragon Ball, an epic tale that told of seven magic balls which, when brought together, summoned the Eternal Dragon who arises from his subterranean lair in a fury of ageless power to grant whoever summoned him a single wish, whatever it may be. When the wish has been granted, the dragon returns to his eternal slumber, and the Dragon Balls are scattered over the face of the Earth once more. It was here that we met Goku, a pure and innocent boy with a tail who was found in the wild and raised by a legendary master of the martial arts. The boy developed incredible powers. Now, Goku is a man, and the fight between good and evil forces has intensified. Dragon Ball Z: The next generation has arrived!

Part A

A small spaceship hurtles toward Earth and then enters its atmosphere. On an ostrich farm, a farmer is loading hay into his pickup truck when he sees the ship crash into his farmland some distance away. He decides to go check it out. (title card) He figures he had better bring his peashooter.[a] When he inspects the crater, he realizes it is not a meteor; it is made of steel.

The pod's door opens, and a man emerges, floating up and out of the cavern. He sees the farmer and realizes that this planet's inhabitants are still alive. Kakarot has failed them. The farmer nervously tells the man, "You're on my property." The man says, "Is that so?" and then uses a device to read the farmer's power level. It turns out to be 5, which the man thinks is puny. The farmer points his "peashooter" at the man and tells him that if he comes any closer, he will "use this thing". The man takes a step, and the farmer shoots. The man catches the "pea", then flicks it back at the farmer, knocking him into his truck. The farmer falls to the ground, saying "Well that smarts."[b] The man from space thinks that the people of Earth are fragile. Then he notices a higher power registering on his scouter. He assumes it is Kakarot, and he takes off in that direction.

At a house in a mountainous wilderness, Chi-Chi calls for Gohan to come in for lunch. Meanwhile, Goku fells a giant tree with a punch and brings it to the house. Chi-Chi stops calling for Gohan and asks Goku if he thinks he has enough firewood. He says it ought to do. Chi-Chi warns Goku that he is going to hurt himself doing that one of these days, but he insists he will be fine.[c] He asks where Gohan is,[d] and Chi-Chi says she does not know, but Goku needs to find him or they will be late to Master Roshi's get-together. She advises him to take the Flying Nimbus; he agrees and runs off, telling her goodbye. She calls out after him to be careful, and says that all this worrying is going to give her wrinkles.[e]

In another mountainous wilderness, a green man is standing on a cliff, minding his own business, when he feels a great power approaching. He thinks it is too horrible to be Goku. Then the man from space drops in. He excuses himself and explains that he was trying to find someone named Kakarot, and thought the green man might be him. The green man says, "You're excused, but maybe you should get glasses for both your eyes." The space man says the green man is a very funny man, and the green man tells the space man not to count on it, and also to be off. The space man laughs and acknowledges that the green man would like that. Then he uses his scouter to read the green man's power level, which is 322. The space man says he can tell that the green man is not from this planet.[f] However, it would be foolish to challenge him with such insufficient power.

The green man braces himself for battle and tells the space man that he has no interest in starting a fight, but the space man does have an interest. The green man attacks with a great energy blast but only manages to singe some of the space man's leg hairs. The green man panics while the space man offers to demonstrate a more effective attack, which he calls "Keep Your Eyes On the Birdie". He holds up a hand to gather energy, telling the green man to keep his eyes on the birdie. Then, his scouter beeps. He says, "I sense a stronger power. That must be him!" And then he takes off, leaving the green man gritting his teeth. The green man thinks this guy could be a problem. As the space man flies, he tells Kakarot that he is coming. He can still remember the day they sent Kakarot to this planet as an infant. They had such high hopes for him; why has he not fulfilled his mission? And the baby in his thoughts has hair just like Goku!

On the Flying Nimbus, Goku looks for Gohan and eventually finds him stuck in a tree high above a river, crying for help.[2] Meanwhile at Kame House, Bulma arrives in a helicopter. She enters the house where she is greeted by Krillin and Master Roshi. She says it has been a long time, and Master Roshi agrees, but he thinks she is as beautiful as ever. Bulma smiles and says that men are impossible. Roshi asks her if she forgot about his truffles, and then he says he will forgive her, but then she surprises him with a box of treats.

While Goku and Gohan ride the Flying Nimbus over the ocean toward Kame House, Kuririn asks Bulma what Yamcha has been up to. She gets angry and tells them that he is playing baseball for a pro team in the city, but he made her so mad that she did not even tell him about this party. He took someone else out, and she is through with him. Roshi says that breaking up is hard to do,[g] and Krillin says, "I wouldn't know." Bulma asks where Goku is, and Krillin tells her that he said he was going to be here, so he is probably on the way. Then he digs into the truffles, while Roshi tells him to leave him some.

The space man flies, noting that the power he is following is moving with great speed, but he will catch it. Then Goku and Gohan arrive at Kame House. Goku calls out to everyone, and they all come outside. Bulma asks him who the kid is, and Krillin is surprised to see Goku babysitting. Goku tells them it is his son, and everyone freaks out. Goku acknowledges that it is "pretty wild", but Bulma thinks he is adorable. Goku tells Gohan to say hi, so he does, bowing. Everyone else bows in response, though Roshi's back threatens to give out on him, and the Turtle takes a liking to him, catching Gohan's attention. Roshi observes that Goku named him after his grandfather. The Turtle approaches, making Gohan cling to his father's leg.

Bulma asks Gohan how old he is. He holds up four fingers and tells her he is five and a half. She asks if he is going to be a brave fighter like his father, but Goku says that Chi-Chi does not let him train. Bulma asks Gohan what he wants to be when he grows up, and he tells her he wants to be an orthopedist.[h] The Turtle startles Gohan again, and Goku tells him that he is just saying hi.

As Gohan clings to Goku's leg, Bulma notices that he has a tail. Goku says he was born with it, just like he was, and Goku encourages Gohan to pet the Turtle. Bulma is concerned, though. She asks Goku if anything strange has ever happened to Gohan at night. Goku does not understand, so Roshi asks if Gohan has ever looked at the full moon at night, and Goku says he does not think so. They go to bed early. Goku wonders why they ask, but they insist it is for no reason.

Krillin observes that Gohan is a lot different than Goku was when he was a kid. Goku does not seem happy about this; he explains that Chi-Chi is really protective of Gohan, makes him study all the time, and says that martial arts are a waste of energy. Krillin asks what that says about them, and Master Roshi tells them they cannot expect everyone to agree with what they do; that would be too easy. Meanwhile, Gohan plays rock-paper-scissors with a crab on the Turtle's back, and he gets a face full of foam when he "wins" with rock. Roshi laughs and tells Gohan to watch out; that crab is a sore loser and might pinch him.

Bulma notices that Gohan has a real Dragon Ball on his hat. Goku says it is his grandfather's ball; he has been collecting them for fun. Gohan wants to see the dragon but he will have to give up his ball. Bulma says it is wild to think of all the things they went through together to find them. Krillin picks up a rock and asks Goku what they are going to wish for. Then he skims the rock across the water. Goku picks up his own rock, and says it is a good question. He does not really want for anything. Then Goku throws his own rock, skimming it across the water as far as the eye can see. Roshi thinks to himself that he thought Goku would have less power now that he has settled down. Krillin tells Goku he is still one bad duded.

Just then, Goku senses something heading for them. Bulma asks if he is sure, and he says he is positive; he has never felt a power like this. Krillin says he feels it too now, but Bulma insists there is nothing there. The Turtle looks up, and Goku says he has never felt anything this powerful, and it is a horrible power. He is trembling. Then Roshi sees something approaching. Krillin thinks it cannot be Piccolo. Then the space man lands on the island in front of Goku, and says, "So we meet again at last."[3]

Part B

The space man tells Goku that he has grown up. "I recognize you though, Kakarot." Goku says this name out loud, confused. The space man tells him that is his name. Everyone is confused, and Krillin guesses this guy must be nuts. But the space man continues, asking "Kakarot" what he has been doing all these years. His mission was to terminate all life on this planet. Goku looks at his friends, still confused, and Krillin suggests the space man has the wrong party, and that maybe he is drunk. Krillin approaches him, telling him to leave, and Goku warns him to watch out. The space man knocks Krillin into Kame House with his tail.

After checking on Krillin, Goku notices that the space man has a tail. The space man says, "So you know who I am at last." But Goku insists he has never seen him before. Gohan tries to run to Goku, clinging to his leg. Bulma tries to tell him to come back, and Goku does too. Meanwhile, the space man asks Goku if he ever suffered a serious head injury when he was a child. Roshi seems to register something, and the space man asks again. Goku says he does not remember it very well but he did hit his head when he was a child; he still has a scar. The space man realizes that Goku forgot. Goku demands to know what it is that he forgot.

Roshi cuts in, saying that he heard something from his grandfather that he should know. Grandpa Gohan found a spaceship in the woods, and Goku was nearby in a small pod. Gohan tried to take care of him but he was wild and uncontrollable, not to mention unusually powerful for a baby. Then one day he fell into a ravine and injured his head, and after that he became a happy, loving boy. Goku asks his master, "I'm from outer space?" Roshi tells him yes. Goku turns to the space man and asks who he is and what he wants from him. The space man says he wants to put him to work.

Krillin climbs out of the house wall and tells Goku to be careful; this guy is not normal. The space man tells Goku that he is not normal either. He was born on the Planet Vegeta. He is a space fighter: a Saiyan warrior, just like him. He introduces himself as Raditz, Goku's big brother. Everyone is shocked; Bulma realizes this guy looks like Goku, but Goku asks Raditz why he should believe him. Krillin asks why Goku is on Earth if he is from another planet. Raditz says they had clients who needed a planet like this one, so Kakarot was sent to get it ready for takeover. The Saiyans are planet brokers; they find planets that will bring a high price and send their warriors to purge them of life and make them ready for sale. They send adults to planets with strong inhabitants, but for planets like Earth, a baby is good enough. They sent Kakarot to this planet, but obviously he forgot his mission.

Krillin tells Raditz that if this is true, the Saiyans are an abomination, no better than space pirates. Bulma hugs Gohan and asks Raditz how they can send little babies off into space by themselves. Raditz says, "That's enough! Don't get me mad."[i] He tells Goku that with the help of the full moon, he could have destroyed them all in a few years if only he had remembered. Goku asks what that has to do with it, and then Raditz notices that Goku does not have a tail. He demands to know what happened, and Goku says it was removed permanently a long time. Raditz tells him his true power is gone now; he has lost his ability to transform at the full moon;[j] now he understands how he can get along with these weaklings.

Goku tells Raditz that this is his home and his friends, so it does not matter what he says he is; he does not act like any brother Goku would want to have. His name is Goku and he lives here; Raditz should leave them alone. Bulma agrees, and Roshi says that even if they are brothers, Goku does not have to destroy peaceful planets like he does. Krillin adds that Goku even saved this planet once, and he should go away. Raditz says it is a pity, but he cannot do that. Their home planet met with an unfortunate accident. Three years ago,[k] a huge comet smashed into it and caused it to explode, destroying the entire Saiyan race. Only four of them were gone when it happened, and Kakarot was one of the four. He is very valuable to them and they could use his help right now. They found a planet that will bring a premium price, but they need a little extra manpower. Raditz expects Goku to be excited, but Goku tells him the answer is no. Then Raditz spots Gohan's tail, saying he is a true Saiyan. He will take the boy instead. Gohan says, "No you won't!" while Bulma tries to hide him.

Raditz tells Goku he can see the fire in him; he should come with them; it is in his blood; he loves to fight. Raditz walks toward Goku, who prepares to fight him. Krillin stands next to Goku, but Goku tells him to stay close to Gohan. Goku tries to attack Raditz, but he is easily punched aside. Lying on the beach, Goku cannot move, so Raditz grabs Gohan and tells Goku that he is taking Gohan with him while he thinks things over. It is high time the boy knew his uncle.[3]

Notable Edits

"The Arrival of Raditz" retains roughly 35% of the content of episode 1 and roughly 65% of the content of episode 2 from the original Dragon Ball Z television series.

From original "Z" episode 1, the opening narration and a bit of landscape establishment is removed, cutting directly to Raditz's ship instead. The largest batch of removals revolves around Gohan's adventure in the woods, with it being cut nearly in full. The only scene from this scenario that is retained is a portion with Goku hovering up on Kinto'un ("Flying Nimbus") with Gohan clinging to a tree branch; all Gohan material before this is cut (which includes him teleporting up there in the first place), and the subsequent brief scene of Goku looking up and down in an attempt to figure out what happened is also cut. Following this, a short scene with Raditz flying over a town is likewise removed.

From original "Z" episode 2, brief snippets of the Turtle Hermit ("Master Roshi") fondling Bulma, as well as bits of Raditz on the island, are removed. Around a minute's worth of content will be moved to the next dub episode.

Rewritten dialog and digital visual edits are also on heavy display this episode. Of note:

  • The farmer Raditz first encounters mutters "That smarts..." after being attacked, implying that he is not dead.
  • Piccolo's "Now listen to me! You came here! I have no interest in starting a fight!" is in direct opposition to his original dialog, where he threatens to kill Raditz.
  • A reference to Lunch is written around during the reunion at Kame House; other than one instance of a group photo, any scenes with Lunch in the first two "seasons" were removed entirely.
  • Gohan states his age as "five and a half", which ages him up by at least one year throughout the remainder of FUNimation's English dub compared to the original source material.

Dubbed Dialog Edits

Certain lines of dialog — namely those including the words "kill" or "death" — were replaced following the original broadcast in the initial batch of episodes; these revised dialog edits are present on all home video releases until FUNimation's "Rock the Dragon" edition in 2013. This episode's replaced lines include:

Character Time Original Broadcast Line Replacement Line
Chi-Chi 5:16 "I'm going to worry myself to death." "All this worrying is going to give me wrinkles."
Master Roshi 13:38 "Oh, this isn't good. I smell death in the air." "Oh, this isn't good."
Master Roshi 16:10 "Then, one day there was an accident. You fell into a ravine and badly injured your head. Any other child would have died, but you recovered, and from that day on, you became a happy, loving boy." "Then, one day there was an accident. You fell into a ravine and badly injured your head. But you recovered, and from that day on, you became a happy, loving boy."
Raditz 18:15 "Fools. I could kill you all right now." "Enough! Don't get me mad."
Goku 20:22 "I've had enough! I'd die before I join a gang of pirates like you!" "I've had enough! You don't have to worry about that; the answer is no!"

Availability

FUNimation/Pioneer home video releases

"The Arrival of Raditz" was first released on home video in 1997[4] as part of the "Dragon Ball Z: Arrival" VHS (either $14.98 or $19.98; both prices are cited by Pioneer), a special compilation of the first four edited, English-dubbed episodes from the 1996-1998 production run. This compilation included one set of opening and ending themes surrounding the content of the four episodes, which, other than fade outs and ins from the non-existent commercial breaks, ran as a sort of "feature-length" presentation. Two editions of the VHS were released: an "Action" version and a "Youth" version. These two versions featured different pieces of cover artwork, and while fan commentary is sparse, there appear to be no content differences between the two.[5]

A DVD version of "Arrival" was released in April 1999 (either $24.98 or $29.98; both prices are cited by Pioneer), maintaining the "feature-length" presentation style and revised dialog edits.

The "Dragon Ball Z: Rock the Dragon DVD Box Set Collector's Edition" set from FUNimation, released in August 2013 spanning nine DVDs,[6] collected the entire 53-episode run of the syndication broadcast, plus broadcast versions of the first three films. This release restores first four episodes to their individual versions, and likewise restores original line recordings.

Notes

  1. A peashooter is a toy, so this is probably an attempt at censorship, implying that the farmer's long gun is not a deadly weapon.
  2. In the original Japanese version, the farmer was killed by this bullet. In this censored dub, the speaking line conveys that he is not dead.
  3. Chi-Chi does not imply that Goku cannot handle a tree in the original.
  4. In the original Japanese version, Goku shows no curiosity about Gohan's whereabouts until Chi-Chi asks him about it twice.
  5. In the original 1996 broadcast of this episode on American TV, Chi-Chi said "I'm going to worry myself to death."
  6. This is never implied in the original Japanese version until Nappa and Vegeta recognize Piccolo as a Namekian, surprising both Piccolo and God.[1]
  7. This is a reference to a popular American song first performed by Neil Sedaka in the 1960s.
  8. In the original Japanese version, Gohan says he wants to be a scholar.
  9. In the original broadcast version of this episode on American TV, Raditz says, "Fools. I could kill you all right now."
  10. Raditz does not mention this in the original. He only says, "It is when the moon is at its fullest that we Saiyans are at our best, you know!" Goku is the only one who does not know what he is talking about.
  11. In the original Japanese version, nothing is said about "three years". Raditz says, "The Saiyans have always been a race few in numbers, but now, after colliding with a giant meteor, Planet Vegeta has blown up. Just about all of the Saiyans were vaporized into space dust. Our father and mother included! Including you, there are only four remaining Saiyans."
