M701 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) arranged by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball Z anime in 1989. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Z Episode 1 which was broadcast on 26 April 1989.
Overview
M701 is the fifth BGM in Dragon Ball Z that is based on "CHA-LA". Unlike most BGM in that group, it is in the original key of E Major. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-726 based on its placement in the series. Though it is the twentieth BGM in Dragon Ball Z, it is the twenty-sixth BGM debuting after Dragon Ball Movie 3.
M701 is an instrumental version of the opening song (OP) CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA using the song's karaoke track. It is an analogue of A-1, a Kikuchi-arranged BGM that uses the karaoke track of the Dragon Ball OP "Mystical Adventure!". However, A-1 is used in the Dragon Ball series, while M701 is never used as recorded.
The version of M701 that is used as the Next Episode Preview (NEP) music is a different recording. A bar is cut in the first phrase of the verse, but aside from that cut, the differences are subtle: the melodic synth is a different sound, the melody is played a bit less straight, etc. However, another shortened version cut from the M701 recording is referred to as the NEP music twice in the Daizenshuu booklet notes for track #18 of disc #4:
In this track, where we tried compiling two arrangements of CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA, followed by a shortened version of its instrumental rendition used in the next episode previews...
...And lastly, a shortened version of the instrumental used in the next episode previews to tie it all off.
M701 is track #6 on disc #5 of the Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z Daizenshuu and track #1 on disc #2 of the Dragon Ball Z BGM Collection. The shortened version of that recording is included as part c of the suite entitled "Farewell, Warriors", which is track #18 on disc #4 of the Daizenshuu and track #07 on disc #2 of the BGM Collection. This released short version was not given its own catalogue number. The NEP version is unreleased; however, as with tracks like B3, C3 and M708A-1, we treat the used version as the released version in our catalogue, since the released version is never used as such in the anime.
The NEP music is not documented on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant.[1]
Usage
M701 is used for every NEP from Episode 1 to Episode 199. After that, the NEP music is based on the new OP "We Gotta Power".
