M729 is the official catalogue number of a piece of background music (BGM) composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi for the Dragon Ball Z anime in 1989. The piece debuted in Dragon Ball Z Episode 1 which was broadcast on 26 April 1989.
Overview
M729 is the first BGM in Dragon Ball Z. The full composition is part e of the suite entitled "Bridge Collection", which is track #7 on disc #1 of the Dragon Ball Z BGM Collection. The piece was assigned the Kanzenshuu catalogue number of K-707 based on its placement in the series. Though it is the first BGM in Dragon Ball Z, it is the seventh BGM debuting after Dragon Ball Movie 3.
M729 is given the title "Peace And Tranquility" on The Suburbs of kenisu's Magicant,[1] the most common source for fan titles of Kikuchi's compositions.
Compositional Analysis
M729 is in the key of F Major; a flute melody is accompanied by acoustic and bass guitar with some countermelodic material on a synthesizer. (It may be that all of the instruments are synthesized, but only this countermelodic voice fails to match well with a particular instrument; it is something like a low brass instrument, but not quite.)
The form consists of two musical sentences, each composed of two four-bar phrases.
Sentence 1:
Antecedent phrase: F—Gm7—C—F (I—ii7—V—I)
Consequent phrase: Gm7—F—C/E—F (ii7—I—V6/5—I)
Sentence 2:
Antecedent phrase: F—Gm7—C—F (I—ii7—V—I)
Consequent phrase: Gm7—F—C/E—C—F (ii7—I—V6/5—V—I)
The first sentence ends with an inverted authentic cadence. In the second sentence, the bass moves to C on the final beat of the penultimate bar to end the piece on a perfect authentic cadence.
