Synopsis

The Kaiō of the North, East, South, and West are all assembled, and so the curtain opens on the Afterlife Tournament. As a test for the newcomer Goku, the East Kaiō races him, but he somehow manages to become able to enter. The Afterlife Tournament then begins. Goku's opponent is Caterpi, a representative of the southern galaxy. With a caterpillar-like body, Caterpi becomes a pupa in order to transform! But it will be 1,200 years until he hatches... Ultimately, it ends up being Goku's victory.

Summary

Part A

Back on Dai Kaiō's Planet, Son Goku tells Kaiō about Paikuhan's strength while battling against Cell and the others in Hell. Kaiō informs Goku that Paikuhan is not the only strong one. He calls out and seemingly dozens of powerful martial artists appear, all from the North Galaxy. He introduces Goku, calling out three martial artists by name: Migoren, Sarte, and Olivu. He tells Goku that they are all training here to eventually be worthy of being trained by the Dai Kaiō.

In the distance, the group hears a shouting chant: "North Kaiō has died!" A trio of the other three Kaiō (South, West, and East arrive and tease their counterpart. West Kaiō called them all here to throw a party in honor of their "friend's" death. Olivu explains to Goku who these new Kaiō are and how their worlds connect to the Earthly Realm and the Afterlife. To "celebrate" this occasion, West Kaiō proposes that they stage an Afterlife Tournament to determine who the strongest is in the Next World.

Some time later, the group assembles and proposes the tournament to Dai Kaiō. He loves the idea! As a prize, he offers to train the winner. The martial artists are shocked; many had never even considered the possibility. Dai Kaiō leads the assembled Kaiō and fighters through his palace to a door deep in the complex. It opens onto a vast empty space filled with asteroids and other cosmic phenomenon. Goku is floored and announces that he will attend-- and win-- the tournament. East Kaiō is struck at his brashness. How dare such a newcomer think that he would be able to participate? Kaiō insists that Goku is strong enough. East Kaiō considers for a moment and announces that Goku can participate... if he defeats her in a race. West Kaiō objects that she is always just looking for excuses to race, but Dai Kaiō likes the idea.

The pair line up at the makeshift starting line-- East Kaiō rides a flying scooter while Goku stands by himself-- South Kaiō fires the starting gun and they are off! East Kaiō takes the early lead while Goku flies not far behind; both of them have to dodge asteroids as they race for the far end of the course. Goku catches up for a moment and smiles at her, but she accelerates and he must catch up once again.

Part B

The Kaiō and martial artists watch the race from afar, impressed by both Goku and East Kaiō's immense speed. Dai Kaiō whispers under his breath that it is just about time. Goku and East Kaiō are neck and neck when the finish line appears in front of them. They sprint through nearly at the same time, only to discover that Dai Kaiō beat them both! He flew all that way faster than either of them could see. He presents the award to himself.

A bit later, the Kaiō have created a fighting ring in Dai Kaiō's cosmic void for the "In Commemoration of the North Kaiō’s Death Afterlife Tournament". Each of the Kaiō give pep talks to their assorted entrants. Dai Kaiō gives a few opening words before the announcer, a mushroom-headed man, gives the rules: There are four entrants from each galaxy. The matches are not timed, but you can lose by falling out of the ring, crying, fighting dirty, or giving up. The announcer riles up the crowd and the first match is about to begin: Olivu vs. Chop Chai from the East Galaxy. As the battle begins, Olivu seems to tower over his much smaller opponent, but Kaiō warns him that the East Kaiō's team is known for their speed. Olivu struggles to hit his opponent as he literally runs circles around him. Goku recognizes the technique as the Zanzō-Ken, an after-image, but this turns out to be incorrect. Chop Chai can divide himself! Olivu uses this to trick the clones to ram into each other at speed, knocking them all out. Olivu wins!

The following battles proceed quickly: Paikuhan defeats Jinkyo, Kidomo vs an unknown opponent, and several other battles before it is Goku vs South Galaxy's Caterpi. Caterpi looms over Goku and strikes with his several arms. Although Goku dodges, the caterpillar is able to grab him with two and pull him in for a bear hug. Caterpi launches a tickle attack and Goku is unable to escape! Olivu is not surprised by this technique as the South Galaxy is peaceful. Goku uses his ki to break free, only to discover that Caterpi is not as powerful as he thought. Caterpi transforms into a cocoon to bring his ultimate form to bear, but when he does not emerge immediately the referee asks South Kaiō how long it will take. He responds 1,200 years. Dai Kaiō grants the victory to Son Goku!

Tidbits

  • North Kaiō introduces several dead martial artists from his North Galaxy:
  • One of the North Galaxy fighters that Kaiō introduces Goku to is an unnamed Namekian. Although he resembles Muri (who was not yet dead), it is not clear if he was intended to be one of the Namekians killed by Freeza or died earlier in that world's history.
  • Kaiō's Planet is briefly glimpsed in flashback, showing the four Kaiō planets together. This is likely intended to be metaphorical as the other three planets were not previously visible from North Kaiō's world.
  • West Kaiō reveals that the last time all four were together was 300 years ago, or approximately Age 467.
  • The structure of the tournament is unclear. The announcer says that there will be four contestants from each galaxy, although he's doing that in front of a board showing 136 contestant slots. While the Kaiō are giving their pep talks, East Kaiō speaks with at least 14 martial artists, while South Kaiō speaks with 13. West Kaiō only speaks to Paikuhan and North Kaiō only talks to Goku, although Olivu is later seen to fight. It may be that there were other preliminary fights prior to the ones depicted and that the "first" match only occurs when they are down to 16; however this does not seem to work as there is no time gap from when the coaches are giving their pep talks to their teams and the announcement of 16 finalists.

Notes

  1. The Funimation subtitles incorrectly state 700 years.
